Can anyone prove with VIDEO EVIDENCE that barbell deadlifts can cause SPINAL injury?
Muscular injury is not relevant. Things that are not an argument: >insults >appeals to common sense/conventional wisdom >hurr just google it YOU google it first, and see what you come up with >anecdotes
are you trying to make me snap my shit up on video just to prove to you that snap city is a real place?
Henry Collins
For reference, did you try pulling above 3pl8 with a rounded back before? If so how'd it go?
Joseph Turner
Nah, I pull 6plate and my form is generally alright. I'm not saying anything about form. I'm asking if there is video evidence of someone injuring their spine doing a barbell deadlift. Nothing more.
Bentley Ortiz
...
William Gonzalez
Injury would obviously come from bad form though, and the most obvious cause would be a not tight/rounded back. Or are you asking if a DL with proper form will fuck your spine up?
Owen Parker
I'm asking for video evidence of a barbell deadlift causing a spinal injury. As said in the OP, appeals to common sense are not relevant.
Ethan Jones
herniated disc injuries are unlikely to be seen on video because they take time to cause pain. that's why we use the internet to see that therr are countless people reporting herniated discs from deadlifting.
Camden Reed
literally Veeky Forums's version of the earth is flat meme. (the earth is probably flat btw)
Brayden Morgan
This isn't strictly true. Plenty of disc herniations cause immediate and severe pain. Given that there are countless people reporting it, surely there should be at least one video?
Justin Perez
Yeah but the Earth can be demonstrably proven to not be flat.
Can a deadlift be demonstrably proven to cause spinal injury?
Robert Butler
no it's apparently strictly true given the facts 1. there are countless reports online from people who herniated their disc deadlifting 2. so few if any videos of it this is proof that it is rarely accute and there are numerous reasons such as 1. it's just not very interesting looking like when you see someone tear a bicep or pass out and fall over. a herniated disc may well look like a normal deadlift 2. a person may lift through the pain and not even realize it until later or the next session due to blood pumping and adrenaline then it can take time to diagnose it, weeks, if not months. what you do see is many follow up videos of recovering from herniated discs all of which perfectly fits in with the evidence.
Wyatt Bell
So theres no video proof of it then?
Chase Bennett
there's no video proof of it in the same way there's no video proof that lifting weights builds muscle. it takes time to see the effects and isn't a subjecr of debate.
Jackson Murphy
Cop out. Plenty of sites about the symptoms of a disc herniation speak of sharp, instant pain as it happens. If your spinal nerves get fucked with, you're gonna feel it right there and then. Do you even have any sources backing up your claims of delayed onset pain?
Jonathan Gutierrez
You can get spinal injuries from lifting, but that usually doesnt happen untill you lift a lot of weight. And spinal herniation and other spinal inuries are common in people withput any backpain. So for all we know, most people who say they got it from deadlifts cpuld simply just be aggravating a herniation they had before they started lifting.
Most people in their 20s without back pain have some spinal problems. And that number rises as we age. Its completely normal.
Leo Kelly
Thats the dumbest shit ive heard. There are people who broke their back during certain lifts.
Daniel Lee
i fucked my back up from doing conventional deads
Oliver Sanders
Spine though?
Ryder Collins
>Cop out. Nope. >Plenty of sites about the symptoms of a disc herniation speak of sharp, instant pain as it happens Herniated disc pain is a result of a protrusion pushing on a nerve. When you're lifting, you have abnormal levels of adrenaline and blood pumping through your body which dulls the painful effects. >If your spinal nerves get fucked with, you're gonna feel it right there and then Not true, at all. There are reports of people lifting for years with a herniated disc before finally succumbing to the pain, not knowing they herniated disc until their doctor gave them an assessment. Here's an example: reddit.com/r/powerlifting/comments/2vppz5/two_herniated_disc_in_my_lower_lumbar/ I'm not sure why you'd bring up the fact you can get herniations anyway. You can make them worse by lifting heavy weights and that's much worse than simply having them. How far the discs bulge correlates with how much pain you experience. Having more herniated discs can make the pain much much worse. It's not normal and you should not accept back pain.
Grayson Cox
If you look at the anatomy of the spine you can clearly see that the connection between L5 and S1 is vulnerable to extreme flexion under load, your sacrum cannot flex and the disc takes it all. It may well be true that many people have damage or normal deterioration to their spine that would never otherwise cause them pain, but when they deadlift with shit form it aggravates the underlying problem. The spine is resilient, but once the discs are gone, they're gone.
Adam Richardson
>anno domini 2017 >NOT believing the earth is flat. Shiggy diggy
Lincoln Martin
>How far the discs bulge correlates with how much pain you experience. Having more herniated discs can make the pain much much worse. It's not normal and you should not accept back pain.
There correlation between hernaition level and pain isnt as strong as you think. And its very common to have it. Which is why physiotherpists are kinda struggling now. Because its so common in people who doesnt have back pain, and the size of the herniation doesnt correlate well with the pain. There are plenty people who lift, with severe herniation, yet doesnt get any pain from it. Even if you have back pain, it doesnt automatically mean its from the herniation. It could be, but thats not always the case.
I really want to believe he is trolling with that form. it's like he assumes the correct starting position and then proceeds to do almost everything wrong after that.
Luke Martinez
Not him but yes heavy deadlifts can actually damage the spine itself. It is extremely unlikely but there is video of a guy pulling heavy in china and one of his vertebrae snapped live on gymcam.
How do you know if you're hurting your back when deadlifting?
How sore should you be? I feel some soreness in my lower/mid back immediately and the day after but i wouldnt say it hurts, just feel tight and sore in the muscles to the sides of the spine
I usually turn my head to the side mirror when starting to make sure im not rounding my back. I Also check mid rep when doing lighter weight and its looked fine.
The thing is im not sure if im loosing my form when doing heavier weights. Its kinda hard to look off and check. Im only up to 2pl8 for 5 reps and ~ 265lbs for 1rep max so its not a lot of weight. I dont wanna snap my back when i get to 3-4pl8 and fuck up. no workout buddy so no way of knowing for sure
Jack King
didnt wanna cringe watching but it looks like hes using a shitload of 25s or something. That would make your starting/end position fucked up.
Carter Thomas
that's total BS bro, he just fainted plain and simple
Tyler Sanders
how much weight is this?
Cooper Morgan
Looks around 140-160kg.
Nathan Hernandez
just record yourself bud, that way you don't have to look awkwardly to side in the middle of a rep
Jeremiah Harris
...
Justin Ramirez
Pls be trolling
Aaron Bell
this is basically like asking to show video evidence of sex causing STD's. You won't know until later
Ian Wilson
the dude quite literally broke in half.
Ayden Carter
the video is fake and gay
Carter Mitchell
nobody is claiming you can't lift with disc herniations. if you want to take the risk of agonizing pain, be my guest.
Kayden Carter
SNAP CITY HERE WE GO
Noah Nelson
>correct starting position Guy's shoulders are at least a foot past the bar and would have to lift the bar away from his body to get it past his knees if he weren't bending his back

seems pretty reasonable to me, maybe sitting down a little too much. shoulder position looks pretty good
Samuel Price
The bar is not mid foot. The weight is centered on his toes ffs
Nathan Gray

Zachary Rogers
I think the evidence is the 10 million people who have hurt their back/slipped a disc because they lifted something wrong
but whatever fuck form lol
Michael Sullivan
As long as your form is right and you're not using excessive amount of weight, you should be more than fine.
Benjamin Torres
>NEVER do deadlifts because I'm terrified of snapping my back >really want to get more compound full body workouts in my routine >start deadlifting really paranoid now I'm not lifting that heavy since im still worried, never pushed myself yet with deadlifting how can I tell if my form is bad?
Chase Nguyen
>how can I tell if my form is bad? when you snap
Jace Bell
This is unbelievably painful to watch
Elijah Rivera
The only back injuries I've ever seen attributed to deadlifting are disk issues which typically aren't felt in earnest until sometimes as much as a few days after aggravating it. Not the type of thing you would see a video of, as it doesn't happen suddenly during a lift.
Charles Jones
Fuck you faggot, it's common sense that DL can cause serious spinal injury. Ducking Google it yourself I'm not gonna do your research for you
Elijah Perry

This, the shins should be vertical in the correct starting position
Isaac Perry
>the shins should be vertical in the correct starting position I heard that this was very individual and depends on a persons limbs vs torso lengths
Gavin Bailey
Why are there so many stupid dyels on Veeky Forums deadlifting is perfectly fine you stupid shits.
