Gets a bad rap because of the "middle school locker room" associations but it's been long enough that no one really wears it anymore, and if you avoid the spray stuff and just use deodorant, you'll smell very nice. Have gotten more compliments from both sexes since I switched to it.
Occasionally I'll use some unscented brand (I think it's Speed Stick unscented) with cologne, JPGaultlier Le Male. Got it because there was a sale and I have no idea how to pick out the "right" scent, it smells pretty good to me.

the large majority of legit deodorant brands have extensive choices of neutral, soap-smelling deodorant varieties

in fact, you actually have to go out of your way to find "middle school locker room" smelling shit. the only stuff that smells like that are horrible body spray or when major brands try to break out their "fancy" smells

You should have a constant fear of smelling bad in public, either body or breath wise. Smelling bad instantly negates any other positive features you've worked for, and people won't forget it. Smells play a huge part in psychology, even if we don't realize it.

There was this every man jack deodarant that smelled woody and masculine, but it didnt last long. i'm not talking about wanting it to be strong and over powering, it wore off after a while.

I find that spray is generally too strong (locker room) and I'll end up sweating through it fairly quickly, whereas a sticc will leave me dry all day, even to the point of smelling acceptable after the gym.
I used to buy a sticc and spray of the same scent (Old Spice) and do two light collarbone sprays, but people started telling me it was too strong.
Only time you should be spraying is with cologne, which should be reserved for special occasions anyway.

If you smell your pit and the deodorant is fresh, you smell acceptable.
If you can't smell your pit, you're starting to smell dank.
If you smell a bit of sweat, you're sickening everybody around you.
If you're not wearing deodorant, you'll reek of shit after a couple hours, period. People naturally smell bad, it's not something you can avoid by cleaning up your diet or showering twice a day. Please just wear deodorant. If it's feasible, reapply halfway through the day, especially if you live in a hot area. Keep a small sticc in your bag or car.

I swear it smells different than it used to when it came out. I remember it being like a leathery earthy smell, now it's kind of a sweeter smell.

Only one that doesn't make me want to vomit when I smell it on myself, and it's cheaper than the regular kind when on sale (obv I stock up). Also no aluminum or other possibly toxic chemicals. Aluminum causing dementia might be a meme but I'm not taking any chances.
