>The men all chilled to the bone, almost too exhausted to move and with the depressing consciousness of defeat weighing heavily upon them. A bad defeat, there can be no gainsaying it... we had been badly beaten, and by the English – by the English we had so laughed at a few hours before.
Simply smashing.

Having a professional army that can inflict 2-1 casualties on what is arguably the most powerful army on Earth, even at a numerical disadvantage, is nice. What's not nice is suffering 100,000 casualties in a few months and suddenly you have to raise an army from scratch because that's 2/3 of your entire military.

>Our brave lads die in some European war because the krauts decided to use Belgium as a shortcut

>millions of men drowning in mud
>last hurrah

Honestly why does belgium even exist? Everyone just walks through them to get to either france or Germany

>why does belgium exist
to give the british the excuse to intervene in a continental struggle

what a time to be alive that would have been

That's exactly why it exists.

true

France asked for meatshields

By that point austria hungary was done for

>these fucking casualties
Imagine the mess nowadays if only 1000 dudes died in a battle.

Belgium isn't even a real country anyway. Britain should've just helped big willy fuck up the french and finally take back Calais.

It would depend on the context. A war with another major power and people would be happy that the nukes aren't flying. Some random counter-insurgency war and the reaction would depend on the number of troops engaged vs the size of the enemy force. Oh and obviously whether or not our guys won would matter as well.
