tl;dr is that Yugoslavia failed with Slovenia, Croatia and non-Serbs of Bosnia wanting independence while keeping the borders they had as federal republics within Yugoslavia while Serbs wanted an ethnic-based division and creation of new borders in a plan which seems to have involved ethnic cleansing to tidy it up.
