The USSR should've backed from Afghanistan earlier and continued to exist in a similar fashion.
The Americans had a military objective. The Vietkong had a military objective. Some fighting was done. The Americans didn't get their objective, the Vietkong got theirs. This is a lost war for USA and a won war for Vietkong.
