Why didn't they just chill after they got Manchuria?

And have to watch while the chinks had all the fun killing eachother?
They wanted natural resources: rubber, tin, crude oil, other ores, etc.
They couldn't handle the Aussie banter in Versailles.
superiority complex
They got fucked very badly during the Great Depression. No one buy their stuff and all trade collapsed and the merchant who was barely represented in the government were completely replaced by military. So they decided to be self-dependent and invade China for dem market, resources and slaves.
Rabid militarism and race based nationalism, and related expansionism. Also they massively underestimated the difficulty of subduing a nation the size of China, even with the civil war, and partially because the war had helped caused modernization and expansion of the Chinese military. And then afterwards they easily swept Indochina and the South Pacific, especially Oceania. In honesty, Pearl harbor and the simultaneous attacks on other American Pacific territories was probably their best bet in trying to defeat the Americans before the war started. They knew that war was inevitable with America, and that a properly prepared United States would crush them. They hoped they could cause the Americans to concede immediately, and if not believed that with the time they bought themselves that they could subdue China, and thus bring the vast majority of their army, a significant portion of their airforce, and some of their navy to bear. This was obviously incorrect.
He did nothing wrong
Kwantung Army was a Splinter faction that cared only for one thing: war.

SEA is controlled by Europeans. Blockades were happening.
What happened?
Japanese expansion had been planned as early as 1922
None of the warlords in China recognized Manchuguo. Sitting back and letting China unite then zerg rush them was a bad idea.
Many in the army thought China's disorder was the perfect time to attack.
They also didn't discover oil there until after the war. Had they found it in the 30s. Japan probably wouldn't have invaded all of China, instead just playing factions off each other. Or giving support in recognition for Manchuguo.
Everything ITT is wrong. Japanese have a very prominent inferiority complex towards China because they feel like its weird little clone. There was absoluetely 0 reason to invade China. It had no ressources Japan needed, and it was a weak, medieval nation that was 0 danger to the industrial powerhouse that was Japan. Their only real motive to invade China was to kill and rape as many Chinese as the can.

Japan was 4 years into the China war before their oil got cut off so I doubt not having oil was a factor in their going to war.
It's a pity Germany and Japan didn't coordinate their expansion plans a bit better. Japan could have flanked the soviet union from the east, and germany from the west. After dividing soviet union between them, Japan could have concentrat on China, and Germany on Britain. After that, the US. Damn, the world would be glorious.
Germany was too busy coordinating with the Soviets on how to carve up Europe.
June 4th Tiannamen Square Massacre
六四屠杀
Japan didn't do so hot against the Soviets in '39 and then didn't do anything to the Soviets, partially because even after the war against Germany started, the Soviets kept over 120,000 men, including air, in heavily fortified positions to prevent them from doing so.
