I used a small hand towel back when I was a skelly and had no mass on my traps but then I learned proper form and built up 20 pounds and it got much easier.

You need to rest the bar on the muscles, not the bone of course. Just tense up your upper back.

I also do tricep extensions resting my back on the curl rack.

I just wear a hoodie and have the hood bunched up in the back of my neck so it's kind of a cushion

I quite like a nice warm up on the exercise bike user.

It's a consistent ritual to start the workout (as opposed to a different routine each day).

That said 20 minutes is way to much. 10 would do I'd say.
