Money

ancient american tradition

Getting some 'Dick'?
Checks out

>Why did they even do this?
>ancient american tradition

It all comes back to oil in the end and the Americans innate desire to go after it.

>What was their problem?
Not enough whales.

>Why did they even do this?
*Dense bone and teeth for product manufacture
*Baleen plates are basically sheets of plastic
*Literal tons of tasty meat
*Fat for all sorts of culinary and industrial applications
*Lamp oil/engine fuel with a little smoke, high temp and long shelf stability
*Various uses for organs and biproducts
*Ambergris

Pretty much this.

As much as I despise whaling, it's easy to see why an industry could be built around it in seafaring societies, especially when you don't give a fuck about animals

This. Money is the only thing people want in the world.

What about sex?

People will have sex for money. People will pay money for sex.

You can buy it with money.

Then people don't 'want' money per se, they need money to get things they really want.

It becomes people's prime goal in life [to make money], everything else is secondary to money. They'll do anything for more money, even commit acts of evil. These days most of the evil in the world is sprung from someone wanting more money. People are destroying the earth just to get more money.

>ancient american tradition
Only if you count natives and they still do it. Cultures in which whaling is an actual tradition (Japan, Faroe Islands, etc.) resist giving it up extremely strenuously.

moby dick is the best novel ever written

My turn.

Semi-related, but I found this documentary called Killers in Eden. It's about a whaling town in Australia which had a pod of killer whales in a symbiotic relationship with the whalers of the village. They would help herd the whales towards the whaler's boats and the whalers would leave the carcass out for a couple days so the killer whale pod could eat the jaw and tongue.

>They were seen near the port of Eden in southeastern Australia between 1840 and 1930. A pod of killer whales, which included amongst its members a distinctive male called Old Tom, would assist whalers in hunting baleen whales.[1] The killer whales would find target whales, shepherd them into Twofold Bay, and then alert the whalers to their presence and often help to kill the whales.
>Old Tom's role was commonly to alert the human whalers to the presence of a baleen whale in the bay by breaching or tailslapping at the mouth of the Kiah River, which is one of the smallest rivers, where the Davidson family had their tiny cottages. This role endeared him to the whalers and led to the idea that he was “leader of the pack,” although such a role was more likely taken by a female (as is typical among killer whales),[1] probably the whale known as Stranger. After the harpooning, some of the killer whales would even grab the ropes in their teeth and aid the whalers in hauling.
> The behaviour was recorded on movie film in 1910 by C.B. Jenkins and C.E. Wellings and publicly projected in Sydney, although the film is now missing and believed to have been destroyed/damaged in the 1930s when bank vaults in Sydney, where they were kept, were flooded.

WE ARE TWO MARINERS

Oh you trawler men, come on
Forget your snapper and your prawn
For it’s out of Ballina we’ll sail
Fishing for the humpback whale

POST WHALING SONGS

youtube.com/watch?v=DPYAZUcohmw

Whales were valuable resources. There’s nothing morally wrong with whaling, except for the fact that they overhunted.

There's nothing wrong with whaling in itself any more than there's anything wrong with hunting land mammals. More primitive whaling cultures didn't threaten the very existence of their stocks. They couldn't. And -- you know -- why the fuck would they do that if they could? They needed the stock to be strong for their sons and their sons.

The problem was greed and technology.

That's really not true. There's a number at which you can't possibly use all or most of your money, but lots of people keep wanting more. It's kind of disgusting, but it was greed like this that made Nantucket such a strong economy, and it drives a lot of industry today, for better or worse.

It's been theorized that the Quaker businesspeople were gung-ho about accumulating wealth precisely BECAUSE it was more acceptable to seek money than to seek most earthly goods and comforts money could buy. Like the act of killing whales, ruthless commerce may have been a release valve for a community built on peace, humility and simplicity.

I wasnt here when snacks was around

I dig his actual podcast tho

what's the context of this pic?

>Literal tons of tasty meat
This. Whale tastes really good

One of my life wishes is to someday eat whale meat

Can I go to iceland and do that withour dying from mercury poisoning?

Also, explain how does whale taste like

Blowholes were the original fleshlights

In the 1953-54 whaling season, which saw the widespread use of factory whaling ships for the first time, the Japanese and Soviet whaling fleets killed more than two thirds of all the whales in the world.

they learnt it from Basques

>There’s nothing morally wrong with whaling
I disagree, whales are relatively intelligent animals. I don't think they should be hunted.

>Lamp oil/engine fuel with a little smoke, high temp and long shelf stability
This is the part that most fascinates me. The idea of relying on oil harvested from a living creature is so foreign in the age of fossil fuels which we take for granted.

Minke whale is fucking delicious and much less stringy than beef. I've'nt had pilot whale yet but I assume it's great as well.

What’s wrong with hunting intelligent animals?

>I disagree, whales are relatively intelligent animals.
So are humans but we still kill them in wars to secure resources.

Hunting them is fine. Hunting them to extinction is wrong. Mobs dick was boring as fuck.

Yeah, and that's criminal. Embarking on war to take stuff is against intnt'l convention. If whales massed on our border with trebuchets full of barnacle rocks, then we could talk

I'm not even fully opposed to hunting whales but if you're gonna do it you'd better go out in a little boat with a pointy stick and do it yourself. prove you have the right. What they do today is just harvesting, and whales deserve more respect than fish or wheat.

Same reason we do the same to muslims, they hoard our oil.

>that's criminal
Call the FBI, I don't give a fuck.

The context is WT Snacks is fucking a dead whale

>problem
Need more whales
>why
multiple reasons, first among them was the thrill of hunting of sea beasts in their own environment

Whaling should only be allowed if those whaling are in their tiny boats with harpons.
Industrialized whaling while more """""""humane""""""" removes the real reason for whaling and reduces it to a mere economic process.
I am certain the whales would appreciate a fighting chance as well.

If you don't care what's right or wrong I don't know why you'd even opine. This picture always makes me smile but it's better without the dumb text.

because the white whale represents god, and abraham is angry at him ore something idk,go read it yourself

I don't really care. They're still below humans.

Whale oil burned longer and brighter and it was before we found out oil came from the ground, too.
>Waah, humanity so evil
Because no other species kills to better it's chances of survival, eh?
