Having been to Russia, and having a lot of Russian friends it is rather hard to explain. 1) Most don't deny Stalin was a bad guy, but he is also a great leader at the same time and saved the soviet union so it is a hero. it kind of cancels itself out. 2) they never commit genocide. Atleast compared to the nazis, everything that resulted in large deaths was mostly due to really poor management (no, i am not denying soviet crimes like Katyn...). 3) they ban a lot of western films because they make a mockery of the soviet union and russia even though it is meant as a comedy. They really dont like to see their history mocked. If they do it, it is okay, but if another country does, well, that just pises them off.
You can't ignore how important the soviet union was to Russia, its a weird mix of soviet nostalgia, modern nationalism, and this weird love of imperial Russia. That pretty much sums up the modern political views of russians lmao

My parents and grandprents lived in the ussr. Nobody was starving. Only during the war under german occupation. You americans need to anderstand that not eating exesive food and becoming fat like a barrel does not equal starving.
