I'm a teacher and a psychologist and have noticed that a number of the short students have checked out already, mostly by the 2nd grade of HS.

I've always been short since I was a kid. In elementary school it is noticed but since all peers are children it hardly mattered. You're pretty much expected to be at the front of every photo.
In highschool it probably starts coming into play but you have next to no understanding about women so you either don't realize the cause of some things. In highschool, my best friend was one of the tallest of our year and I was one of the shortest. Only partly related but he has pale skin, green eyes, straight blonde hair and I have Mediterranean tone skin. brown eyes, wavy brown hair but I wouldn't say either of us are ugly. We have very similar personalities since we've been friends since elementary school. Anyway people around the school would just know who he is through word of mouth and only friends or immediate classmates knew me despite we were pretty much always together. Girls would offer to do his homework for him, and show enough interest in him that he could ask them out. I never really got any of that. Any girl I asked out was seemingly out of the blue for them although I did manage a gf in highschool. You don't really relate this to height in highschool because you still assume girls like personality.
Once you get older it becomes clearly evident. Girls will outright mention they have a minimum height. No one really turns their head when you walk into a room, and the statistics and studies are out there on how height affects your life. The same friend from highschool was approached by an older, richer woman who he's married to now. She says when she saw him height and hair she had to have him, and simple as that, they're married now.
I can say things don't "just come to you" when you're short. You really have to go out there and take what you want.
