Why were the Europeans impressed by Benin city when they found it
Why were the Europeans impressed by Benin city when they found it
because it had been all mud huts and stick city walls up until that point
No not really many West African cultures had complex buildings like Kano Kumasi njimi Timbuktu djado and other cities
I think it.was their bronze work
Maybe because they thought it was neat?
My parents were impressed by my artwork as a child. Not that it was objectively good in anyway.
they were just being nice
>Degrading your creativity just to appease the idea that Europeans cannot possibly be impressed by African cities
That's like the 50th time I've seen the screenshot. Might I have a source?
Also Europeans were also impressed by whole cities made of gold in the Americas... which didn't exist.
t. Mad
They were willing to go all the way to just get these Benin artwork
But Benin did exist
Here's a box depicting a house
Pretty sure that it was the metal working they had their ivory and pepper
>Lisbon
>Madrid
>Florence
A collection of mud huts must be impressive indeed if you've lived all your life in a Latin shithole
We're the Latin countries really that bad?
No, the British annexed Benin out of vengeance and shipped a load of the bronzes/sculptures off for ethnographic purposes
They traded with the Portuguese and made ivory carvings for them the Portuguese would either show them an object or describe the object to them for carving
The bronze were also commissioned that and used as a method of record keeping
>British annexed Benin out of Vengeance
Annexed? Lol they fucked it so hard it got quadriplegic paralysis from the sheer assfuck.
>many West African cultures had complex buildings
such as?
