Peasants were the ones working for them, they fell into the classification as "peasants" because they didn't fall into the aristocratic classes or own giant factories.
Kulaks had the mentality of American slave plantation owners and they didn't even have to treat the peasants good or feed them since they just employed them rather then slave owners who had atleast some commitment to keeping their slaves alive. Kulak translates to Clenched fist which gives you a little hint at what the people thought of them.

My dad who worked on a collective farm in Czechoslovakia in his youth said they actually got higher yeilds than Western Europe... when they used American imported John Deere tractors, that is. With Soviet tractors it was worse.

However, note that apart from China and USSR, no European country had starvation from collectivization. What we lacked and had massive queues for were stuff like bananas, oranges, mandarines.... in short everything imported from the tropics.
