You misunderstand the conflict. It's not a protestant vs catholic conflict as it was centuries ago. It's an ethnic conflict, and both ethnicities are neatly divided over religious backgrounds. The Irish are republican, and their cause is to build a 32-county socialist republic. The British are loyalists, and believe that the British people of Northern Ireland should remain part of the United Kingdom. (Note: to make things more complicated, there is a distinction between republicanism and nationalism, and loyalism and unionism. And that not all Irish fit into the republican background, nor British in the other group - these are all generalisations)
The problem arises from the fact that Northern Ireland has a large intractible Irish minority who don't recognise the UK as their nation and they want a united Irish republic. But if there were a united Ireland, you'd have a similar problem but this time with a large intractible British minority who refuse to recognise the republic of Ireland as their country because they're British.
