Trenchfoot

How do I deal with blisters? I am going into military training and most guys get the kick because their feet obstructs them from moving properly forward at a satisfying pace, or because it hurts like a fucking madman.

How to prevent and or treat blisters on feet that will walk A LOT? Any useful advice? This is fitness related because marching is a form of training.

I was in norwegian army last year, and since i was in the signal troop i marched a alot with really heavy equipment, so i have some advice on this.

My first advice is to start walking a lot now to prepare your feet, I did this and it helped me alot. Another important thing is to put sport tape (?) on areas where your most likely to get blisters, my blisters were often around my little toe, so therefore i covered that area with sportstape. You can also try to use two pairs of socks, I put thin wool socks on my feet then i covered them with thick wool socks.
And of course, remember to polish your boots. This is extremely important.

Feel free to ask more questions! and sorry about my english

This is the tape im talking about

Wear nylons. 12 miles later your feet will thank you.

Break in your boots. Don't wear cheap socks. Change them as needed during halts on marches. Damp socks are widowmakers. Gold Bond is your friend. As is Vasoline (one fingerful at the top of your asscrack pre-march will also prevent monkey ass as it works into all the important areas). Trim your toenails every two weeks, making sure they're rounded, never squared off. If blistered, Lance, drain, and cover as needed (medics can help with this).

Welcome to the brotherhood. RLTW.

Danskdjævel here, thanks for the advice. Would you you think about 's recommendation? Maybe put a set of nylons underneath a set of wool socks?

Pic related, my training program. Is it too progressive or?

This and CHANGE YOUR SOCKS during breaks

We use compeed. Rub it in between your hands to warm it, and stick it on dry skin.
It lasts for days.

Make sure you always have dry socks for the day. During the day, every time possible, give your feet/socks/shoes the chance to dry by taking them off.

Start training now. Apart from muscle use, your body will (have to) adapt to the distance and the weight on your back. You will probably receive new shoes once enlisted, which isn't ideal, but try to prepare your body as much as possible

It looks good. Maybe try to increase the weight of your bag after some. Remember that your bag will most likely be heavier, and on top of that your going to carry a vest with equipment and a rifle.
Our bag weighed around 50 kg + we carried a heavy vest and a hk416. So try to increase after some time.
And about nylon. I´ve never heard about that trick before.

This is important OP. During your breaks change your socks especially if they´re wet. If your feet get wet dry them immediately, this is really important!

Guy from here. Nylons under your socks are a terrible choice. They'll reduce friction, but they'll retain moisture, and once you wear a hole in them - and on a movement of any length you're going to - your feet will look like ground beef.

so im guessing you just shipped to your batt.

But what about when your feet will inevitable be sweaty? Doesn't that facilitate blisters?

As long as you dry them every now and then, its okey.

Bro I'm 34. Been out of that young man's game since 2010. Eight years was plenty.

On a related note, what are some good ways to deal with mental stress and exhaustion?

They always say that its the will that precedes the effort, so how do you win the mind games fit?

Rounding off toenails causes ingrown toenails so I don’t know if I would necessarily follow that advice, despite the intuitive thing about it

I road marched all over hell and creation in two armies and I wore nylons booties under my wool socks whenever possible. They always work. Wearing a hole in them is as easily managed as changing your socks is (which is something you're supposed to do anyways that most troops neglect and that alone causes more damage than anything else).

In training situations, it's easy: you already know when it's going to end. Go into it knowing that it's a temporarily subpar situation and remind yourself to be positive every day. In other words, fake until you make it.

I suggest riverfox socks, and wearing the issue dress socks under them. The additional layer buffers friction on your foot but adds heat.
Wear your boots snug and ensure they fit properly.
As for soreness, stretch and massage your feet by hand when you get rest opportunities.
In regard to trench foot, expose your feet to sunlight and alternate between pairs of socks and boots when situation allows for it.
Keep your feet dry when possible but to break in the boots when you first get them, take a shower in them and wear them around for a bit. It makes the leather pliable and when it dries it will conform to your foot. The rubber you will have to work by hand.

Get started training now. Walking under load is more difficult than you'd think. If you have access to a gym with variable treadmills use them. Set to about 4mph and select a hill program, wear a backpack. Do it as long as they allow you (some gyms have a time limit. When you're in the field wear a pair of dress socks under your boot socks. The other posters have hit the major points already. Good luck user.
