In rural areas, people were short as fuck though. I lived in Shanghai so you would also see lots of tall foreigners.

nah man, I was a student in Shanghai. If you like foreign cultures, you will have a blast over there. I was prepared for the cultural shock so I didn't have any problems. I was also able to somehow manage without being able to really speak mandarin except for the basics. numbers are especially important to understand. other than that, you don't really need to learn the language if you know how to properly use your phone (VPN or offline apps are a must)
english teachers are paid quite well if you ask me. a guy I know went there a second time after our studies and received like 18€/hour and about 800€/month. definitely enough for living in Shanghai if you can find a cheap place to stay. my scholarship was like 800€ and was more than enough to pay for my living expenses as well as for my travels

I actually never felt safer in my life. there's cameras everywhere in the big cities and lots of police. if you don't fall for scammers, you will never have any problems. a scam taxi driver tried to fuck us over once, asking for more money. in the end, I wound up paying him less, letting him call the cops, and ultimately jewing down the price with the cops to the original price I told him I'd pay. so yeah, safer than over here in Germany and the west in general
