Get a 1-2 on the sides and back, fade/taper the back (sides optional) and leave ~2-3" on top. Style however you want. Simple, masculine, timeless, works for all ages and all occasions, always looks good, never seems ridiculous or tryhard. Start with this before you do anything edgy. Most men generally look best with something close to this.

go 2 days without, then 3, then 4 and so, you should aim to use shampoo once and a week and let your hair produce its natural oils. It only makes excess oil at the moment because the shampoo is drying it out too much, once you stop it'll go back to normal and not get really oily without using shampoo.
