Army List Building General

It's been too long edition.

Because the other generals are cluttered, and forums are too slow. AoS, 40k, etc. all welcome. Post your army list or idea for an army list below.

General List Building Advice: 1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics#Listbuilding_101

Some Dos and Don'ts of this thread:

DO:
- Post what you want to do with your list (tournament, casual, etc.)
- Post the points limit
- Post the total cost of each model (for characters) or unit
- List the upgrades a unit has taken
- List the dedicated transports a unit has taken
- Clearly identify which detachment/formation each unit belongs to

DON'T:
- Post the individual cost break down for each upgrade
- Post the individual stats of a unit
- Copy the list directly from battle scribe (or equivalent)
- List ALL the war gear/special rules a model/unit has
- List all the command benefits a individual detachment has

Looking for a little feedback on what I just came up with. Hopefully this thread stays around.

200 Heavy Support Squad
5x Volkite Culverins
Artificer, Augury Scanner

120 Scorpius, dozer

Use kheres on the contemptor, if you really need the 48 inch range then mount them on a regular dread, much cheaper

I started with nids, switched to AdMech when they came out, and will collect some more nids now.
I don't have much in terms of playable nids, which are:
Dakka flyrant
Dakkafex
Termagants+devourers
Genestealers+broodlord
Laius Horror
Zoanthrope

What should I get next? I'll get at least the nid value box for more warriors and another dakka flyrant, but what else is good?
I'm looking to play more of a mid-range nid army with more specialization and less horde

3xWhilwinds (storm bolter on each)

I haven't faced orks before, so I don't know what I'm in for.

The second battle demi is 675pts*

basic rules vs orks

keep them at range: they're strongest in close combat especially boyz and nobz

flamers and templates do wonders

kill trukks before they can deploy mobs at close range

lootas can kill tanks pretyy well

stompas are massive dakka engines

Got an escalation league tomorrow
500 points not sure if people will cheese or not but w/e

Tau cad
Hq-commander with iridium, onager, neuroweb and two fusion blaster
Troop one-7 breachers in a devilfish
Troop two-7 breachers in a devilfish
Fast attack-6 pathfinders

Not sure how fucked I am but I'd be fucked even with cheese since I'm a moron at this game
I know there will be necrons and grey Knights played by the local two cheese ball douchebags the crons might have vehicle spam and the Knights might have dread knight and/or storm raven but idk
I'm not sure what others will use so I don't want to make a douchy list since everybody fucking irrationally hates tau so yeah

Plan is to have the vets roll in the storm eagle, using furious charge tactics. That way they can cheese it by hitting and running to try and get the charge off again next turn. Thinking about taking scout armour for the recon squad so they can infiltrate even closer to the enemy and deep strike the storm eagle even closer to juicy targets.

Hang on a minute, just realised my troops come to 1005pts, not 940pts. so guess I need to drop 65pts somewhere

Again my severe mental retardation shows through, the list is still 2000pts

Allied Detachment: Chaos Space Marines

HQ
>Kharn the Betrayer- 160 pts

Troops
>Chaos Cultists- 50 pts

Put me at 1,999 points. Kharn goes with the first set of Zerks in the Rhino, Bloodletter swarm and Skulltaker follow the Possessed and Cultists. Basically the idea is to survive long enough to get into close combat and then RIP AND TEAR your way to victory.

Rhinozerkers are just bad, invest in a land raider

I'm preparing my Six-Million dollar men to fight some Tau. Any Tau players thoughts, specifically how you could kill me or how I couldn't kill you

But sempai, they cost 250 pts and I can't take my formation if I do. A pair of them essentially removes my cavalry and Terminators.

Not sure how slaughtercult works,I'm a regular CSM guy, but if you drop one zerk squad and maybe a plasma pistol on that first squad thats 250pts for a raider right there

It can be a big tasty distraction, and having kharn charge out of a land raider with a bunch of zerkers is bretty gud

What are the kataphrons armed with? Do the infantry have any special weapons? Do you know know what the tau player has/will be bringing?

Hmm seems like an effective option. I'll have to try it next game with a proxied Raider. Know anything about the ForgeWorld Land Raiders?

I'm not 100% sure on the Kataphrons. I know the Breachers will have Arc Rifles (since torsion is hot trash and it gives great anti-vehicle) but I'm split on the Destroyers. On one hand, the plasma is good all around and the Dominus can heal any wounds it accidentally causes, but the Grav seems better against battle suits. And yes, all the Skitarii are bare-bones, with nothing they'll shoot MCs/ Fireteams to hell

The Proteus and Achilles don't have the assault vehicle special rule so are pretty much useless for a zerks list, and the MKIIB is just an alternate design for the regular land raider so you're better off going for the cheaper GW one.

Also I don't know exactly what they're taking, but they tend to play heavy battle suit/ pathfinder, but they SUCK at footslogging (hey, I'll charge my pathfinders through open cover 12" from Necron Immortals!) which is why I brought the arc guns.

If you're going up against suit spam then grav is mandatory it'll do much more work than plasma
Though I feel like the list will be shot away by tau before you can do anything meaningful with it especially the infiltrators will be focussed hard same with your kataphrons

See, I figured Rangers could deal with most basic troops, Kataphrons could kill battlesuits/open vehicles, and Vamguard mows down faggots while Infiltrators take out any potential threats. Am I missing some weapon that'd ruin my day?

Eh
I guess it depends on a lot of things really
As a tau player I wouldn't be intimidated by that list in the slightest as I know I'd shoot it off the board if I get first turn and even if I don't you have to get into position your first turn
but anyway that's just me

So are there any Admech guys/guns that pose a major threat to Tau, or is it just a square peg/round hole thing?

I'd say kastelan robots and Knights
probably a lot of grav too more than six guys at least

A more serious Nid based list

Playing Smashfucker i see...
Really solid heavy stuff, but you lack a lot of necessary base troops and fast attack. I'd go with your Skyhammer/Librarius, plus the librarians get Smashfucker to 2++ rerollable if you get Cataphractii armor (free for the captain) and Sanctuary.

I have another list withthe Cataphractii armour smashfucker, and he is like 15 pts cheaper with the reroll and its nice
I know the skyhammer is a better play, but its just not in good taste at my club
If it was a city tournament then yeah I'd want as many fnp obsec tacticals as I could get

I just need to pass the CataSmashFuckerbuild past the TO first, since its pretty RAW to run that.
Also I want to see how good the 4+ IWND and PoTMS predators are with a techmarine repairing on a 2+

I would perils on any doubles though right?
wouldn't you also wat a biomancy lib or two for endurance?
also biomancy isn't too bad for the list in total.

Besides Smashfucker, I cants see what's in bad taste. The Assualt squads make for a risk/reward fun play, and the drop pods are always a crapshoot between seek and destroy an enemy and murdered before they can do shit. If that's cheesy than I'm scared to know what your LGS is catering to

Yes, but it's WC1 so unless you're playing a Psykers heavy army it's not a problem. Biomancy is a pretty great table for your list, but the hilarity of 2++ rerollable of the equally hilarious invisibility makes it largely irrelevant. And if you really want to up your game, take a few Tech-Priest Dominus (Domini?) to heal any vehicles that may get hurt.

Yeah I'm making this list to go with my 2000pt war convocation/ librarius conclave I have already
we sometimes do 4000 pt games
so I kinda wanna save it for that

And not in bad taste like cheesy
but alot of people run that kinda stuff at the store
and I dont really wanna be another one
Not saying drop pod lists cant be challenging/fun games
they are just very plentiful around my parts

>A lot of people run that kind of stuff
Know that feel, it's the reason I hate playing my Steel Confessors. Now I just do War Convocation all day, all time.

Nice digits
Yeah I kinda stopped my war convo
I just walked over too many armies in league at 2000
Until I make this ebin ass 4000 pt list
god I'm so excited

but until then I'm just playing my nids
I'm kinda hyped about trying those canoptek wraiths (better raveners), scarabs (better rippers), and spider (better tervigon)
I just saw some polish guys batreps with them and it seemed like a fun type of list

have you got to run the Cataphractii Smashfucker?

My new Space Wolf army.

1850, planning to use this at some local Tournies

*Wolves Unleashed Detachment*
>Wolf Lord 200
Runic armor, Black Death, Thunderwolf Mount
>Wolf Lord 195
Runic Armor, Frost Sword, Thunderwolf Mount
>Blood Claws x5 130

>Blood Claws x5 130
Same setup
>Blood Claws x10 120
>Wulfen x8 591
3x Frost Claws, 3x Great axes, 2x TH/SS, Stormwolf with 2x Twin linked Multi Meltas
>Venerable Dreadnought 180
Fenrisian Great Axe/Blizzard shield, Drop Pod
>Thunderwolf Cavalry x4 300
Storm Shields, Frost swords all around

Comes out to 1846 points. Seems like a decent list as long as I am playing Maelstrom and just need to thrash shit.

i really like this list, if i ever get around to building a cult/skittles list i'd do it like this

i'm also surprised this thread has lasted this long

you're probably better off with vanguards instead of rangers
also a dunecrawler with icarus is always good

do yonot want to run war convocation for some rasin?

also breachers are very underwhelming
youre better off Grav glancing them to death

I dunno, I was just hoping for something different for a change. But I suppose free everything is worth it against the Tau...

How many troop choices in space wolves is too many for 2000 points?
Noon pulling out his hair to build a list to plan what to buy.

Well a Knight never hurts, also the boost in unit count for canticles, and no gets hot

but seriously run double grav destroyers
dont use breachers
also infiltrators will be very good against fire warriors- or whatever infantry tau has
and the grav/radium sould eat up al the mc's and etc
the vanguard would absolutely destroy any thing without an armour value. make sure to get the omnispex if he is dropping that ghostkeel shit with the jump pack's and everything is shrouded
fuck that

I'm sorry I dont play wolves
but have you been watching batreps or looking up lists from tournaments etc
I mean that should help you start

I've seen batreps but most of the videos of actual lists are behind paywalls and I just have the battles themselves to work with.

again I'm sorry for not being more knowledgable
but have you been here
frontlinegaming.org/2015/07/22/space-wolves-tournament-list-and-tactics/#comment-422590

I don't love them, but its a start and there is atleast alot of information to read
and a bit of batreps

Thanks for the tips, hopefully I can take out this scape Weeaboo in radioactive steampunk style.

Hey a link is better than getting shat on for playing space wolves in the general. I'm doing research and beginning a list, although I have a goal to not be as bad as the other space wolf player at my shop. He's bad in the sense he is a waac and runs all the op shit from space wolves

this could be where to look too
frontlinegaming.org/2016/03/02/wolf-claw-strike-force-tactics-part-1-detachment-overview/

space weaboo radioactie steampunks?
why do you want to play wolves then?

oh fuck me my bad hahaha im drunk
meant for

also think about kastellan bots
phosphor wounds reduce cover save by 1
and 36" range which is very very nice
also t7, keep the feel no pain protocols on and they last all game

Hey that's cool, so am I

what ya drankin
scotch?

Now looking at it, both phosphor blasters are pretty solid, the range is really good, and they'd definitely hold their own in melee, plus not bad against small-arms Fire. Thanks for the idea user

Whiskey, actually. I'm not fancy enough for Scotch.

I wanna play wolves since it's an army that looks cool and can spray bullets downfield while smashing in assault.
Also because space Vikings. Hell seeing the models is what got me interested in playing in the first place.

Yeah thats good
I've only played against wolfstars
but I think grey hunters are supposed to be good
counter attack is useful in holding objectives
only advice I can give you is to build toward about 1500 pts
then stick with a basic list for a while, tinkering things here and there
usually a 1500 pt list has the same amount of troops as a 1250 pt game and a 2000 pt game
Ey thats better than gin
Scotch is good once you get into it
No other whisky quite lets you rage with such dignity

What should i still add to my Admech list?
I have got
2 - Tech Priest Dominus
1-IronstriderBallistarius
1-Sydoonian Dragoon
2-Onager Dunecrawlers
1- Vangaurd
2 - rangers
1 - infiltrator
1 - Kataphron destroyer

Kinda thought about adding IG allies and using the Emperors wrath formation after reading about it here.
And im always open for general tips!

they are basically 320, which is alot of points
but they just dont die

something to try in a war convocation put the uncreator gauntlet on the cybernetica datasmith and have him and the bots chill next to the knight crusader.

also try putting up an aegis defense line
it counts as a cantacles unit, can never be destroyed, and put your k-bots, destroyers, and dominus behind it for the shroud psalm 2+ cover (super necesary for destroyers)

are you aware of this?

I'd maybe add something to give split fire or hit and run

For a start, you'll want a lot more Skitarii troops. They only really get good when you've got a few dozen bodies.

Also, take advice from
Since that's a great your go-to 1500 force, plus free gear army-wide.

Does anyone have suggestions for a SoB list that can take on Skyhammer, Gladius, and War Convocation at 1500 points? Or can they not compete even with melta spam and cheap units?

dude I don't think you can really beat those kinda armies
its almost just numbers
anything you bring is like playing against a jv team for good lists like that

Coteaz counters skyhammer and exorcists counter convo, but a gladius does everything you can do better.

That looks like a good idea to do thanks

What would you recommend Vanguard or rangers

Vanguard are generally more solid than rangers but are short ranged compared to the Rangers long range guns
So it depends what you want to do with them having a mix wouldn't hurt

A big Tau mess - 1841 (1850)

Formation:

Optimized Stealth Cadre x2 (585pts each)

Stealth Suit Team
-3 Stealth Shas'Ui with Burst Cannon x2 (180pts)

Formations feel like such bullshit.

Get ready cause when the combined admech dex comes out guess what their decurion equivalent bonuses will be?
;^)

Not necessarily. The only units Tau have that can reliably deal with Kastelans are Hammerheads with railguns and Stormsurges with Pulse Driver Cannons, and with the Hammerheads, there's always that 1-in-6 chance that you'll bounce the shot back and kill them. Frankly, the only armies I wouldn't field Kastelans against are Guard and Necrons, as Leman Russes, Earthshakers, and Doomsday Arks make mincemeat of them.

Your formatting's good user. This sounds like a fun list, my only real critiques are that you lack anti-air and you might run into problems against melee-heavy armies if you don't have turn 1.

They kinda are. I think they might be better if you had to pay a points cost for the formation on top of the cost for the models, kinda like they make you do in some of the IA books.

i need some help here
i need to cram a chimera for my platoon command squad, but of course im already using too much points, i was thinking about removing a leeman russ battletank or something, any suggestions?

You could probably drop the Skitarii, unless you're absolutely set on using them.

the thing about them is that i need some fast moving heavy infantry to protect the centerpiece of the army that is the doomhammer.

i got 1500 points for now by removing a leeman russ, adding a wyvern, bolters to all my sergants, a vox caster for my 20 men guardsmen blob and a flamer for my company command squad

Remember for the formation you need exactly one unit of Rangers and exactly one vanguard unit.

>Vanguard are generally more solid than rangers
dont do they have the same identical stats? with the rangers being more expansive because they have better guns and more special rules?

Vanguard have the same stats, cause the opponent to have -1 toughness in close combat with them, and their weapon, while shorter range by 12 inches, is assault 3 and automatically wounds anything with toughness TWICE on a 6 to wound.

>Rangers
>more special rules
They need a special rule to compete with vanguard or remove/nerf the cancer effect in cc for vanguard to make them more equal

vanguard guns are much better than rangers'

its 18" but by the time you pop shroudpsalm 2wice aka your first 2-3 turns they will have made their points killing an mc or a horde

rangers are better hanging out and defending from outflanking/ drop pod units with plasma calivers

trust me enemies wont be shooting at your canguard when your pushing a knight and k- bots.
and if they dont shoot at them they will go after your destroyers, no-one likes 36 grav shots a turn

It depends on what you're fighting. Going against Tau, Necron Warriors, or anything 4+? Run Rangers! Fighting MCs or blobs of 5+? Go Vanguard. Personally, I find the 30 shots for 100 points on the Vanguard more satisfying, plus it's a decently reliable way to take down 4++ or better

this seems nice, what should i use for my mechanized list? as i said i will use them as vanguard and protection for my 420p overglorified chimera that is the doomhammer

How the he'll do you cheese GK? Especially at 500 pts?

Good on you though for not building an asshole list.

honestly If you arent running war convocation I'd say spam vanguard with omnispex and a unit or 2 of infiltrators with infoslave skull (acute senses)

but if you have problems against armour replace the infiltrators with dunecrawlers with icarus or neutron laser

Using dread knight and/or stormraven

Trust me these assholes try to cheese everything

The guy playing grey Knights even cheeses nids and orks

Funny thing is I very well could bring just an optimized stealth cadre with the two stealth squads filled out
But I won't cause I'd probably lose with it anyway

As a GK player who has never used a Dreadknight against anything but Demon Princes, I sincerely apologize for all of my kind.

Too little active turn gunfighting?

Everything I fight has jet bikes and/or skimmers, AV10-12. The idea is to make my Veterans go as fast as possible and focus on Tactical Objective VPs, while my Lemans try to look scary while they push forward and focus down anything that has the most anti-tank weapons.

There's so much cover and LOS blocking terrain that once you're in sight of something you're likely within 24" which explains all the melta, Lascannons are only because hull-mounted MM isn't an option and help me plink at something as I get closer.

Lotta Melta. But are you sure you want your Russes in 24" range of the enemy? Are you sure you want to close within 12" to get that melta rule? If you fight a lot of jetbikes heavy bolter sponsons might be a better choice.

People who post their lists in an image or PDF are retards.

>Heavy Bolter sponsons
I have a list for that I made since I wasn't 100% sure on mass melta. If only the Heavy Bolters I take on tanks could be swapped for Autocannons. Hydra could be swapped for a second Wyvern.

>1250/1250 IG mass S5-7 weapons
Pask, Leman Russ Punisher +2 Heavy Bolters
Leman Russ Exterminator +2 Heavy Bolters
Veterans (Chimera) +2 Meltaguns
Veterans (Chimera) +2 Meltaguns
Veterans (Chimera) +2 Meltaguns
Leman Russ Exterminator +2 Heavy Bolters
Leman Russ Exterminator +2 Heavy Bolters
Hydra
Wyvern

As for getting close with tanks, it really depends. I play on a table with a cities of death environment and Tactical Objectives. I just don't want to repeat the same loss but with tanks since my opponents are always faster than me.

I brought an infantry heavy army last game and lost badly. Combined infantry getting deleted trying to hold an objective, HWS twin-linked by psykers are sitting with not much to kill especially with 4+ cover everywhere. Denied of both kills and secured objectives I barely met any VP conditions from these cards.

If your fighting a lot of guys in cover and jetbikes, maybe you should try the ever-unpopular Leman Russ Eradicator. If you do so, you get a weaker shot, yes, but also one that ignores cover, ignores jink (which is a type of cover save and allows you to fire your bolters at full ballistic skill.

You still kill everything T4 and below on a 2+, and now that 4+ jink/cover save is GONE! It also costs 10 points less than an Exterminater so now you can afford a dozer blade & recovery gear combo to keep the tanks unstuck. Or you could take fire barrels to keep infantry from stabbing the tank to death. Or you could take heavy stubbers/storm bolters for more shots.

Or any number of things. Really the Eradicator's weaknesses are "No Anti-tank" and "36" Range". If your not concerned about range and your taking this many Exterminators to battle, tanks are clearly not your problem.

Care to explain why? I find it easier to read my list on an excel spreadsheet, with the upgrades and price tallied on one end.

Incidentally this is a list based around a Bocage-style map, with open fields broken up by ruined tractors and hedgerows and craters. Generally some line of sight blockage but mostly hard cover. Also I'm wondering what to do about AA now that Death from the Skies makes my faction's best AA fighter fire snap-shots. Sure I could take a Hydra, but then how will I drop my melta-team on enemy MCs?
