Go on an epic quest to deliver them at exactly the point I decided to go look for the time crystals, erasing the potential future me that went to look for them so I could just deliver them to where they are supposed to go, saving myself the effort entirely.
There comes a time in every man's life where he learns he is dumb.
What's that article about?
Here's how I understand it, based on what was explained to me:
You roll a die. It lands on some random side and stays there until something acts upon it. That is the die's resting state.
Consider magnets, right? Magnets are not symmetrical. They have a north pole end and a south pole end. At some point the magnet 'decides' which side is positive and which side is negative. That's the magnet's resting state.
Consider crystals. Those aren't symmetrical either, even if the atomic structure that makes them up is. The crystal settles into a shape with flat sides and pointy ends. That's the crystal's resting state.
Now, imagine a temporally asymmetric object. Its resting state is not within the three dimensions we can perceive; its resting state is in the fourth dimension.
From our perspective, the object would seem to oscillate or move around in circles all on its own without anything acting upon it...
>From our perspective, the object would seem to oscillate or move around in circles all on its own without anything acting upon it...
Like Brownian Motion?
Brownian motion results from particles colliding with other particles correct?
From what I understand, a time crystal would move and oscillate all on its own without any outside forces (like other particles) acting upon it.
A particle undergoes Brownian motion because it's consonantly getting bumped by the heat vibration of the atoms surrounding it, ie outside forces acting upon it.
A time crystal would flop about without any such.
You could build a perpetual motion machine!
Stop that
It never stops. It's perpetual!
But user... There's no energy to extract... It's in a ground state.
You joke, but it never ceases to amaze me just how many people exist on this Earth that think that perpetual motion is real, and that only The Man is keeping them from violating every known law of physics using some magnets, duck tape, and a rotisserie machine or some stupid shit.
But what use does a time crystal serve?
If an object is moving, it has velocity. If an object has velocity, it has kinetic energy.
So why couldn't you extract this kinetic energy just like any other kinetic energy?
It would only appear to be moving to us, but would be stationary. If you occupied the same space as where it'd "move" (to, say, push a lever) it would not exert any energy since it doesn't have any.
At least, that's what I think would happen. The whole thing sounds as bogus sensationalism to me.
It's not moving, it only appears to move to us.
It's essentially a solid 3 dimensional optical illusion that ignores the rules of single point of observation - from all angles,it appears to be in motion even though it is stationary.
Ground state doesn't mean no energy. It means lowest energy.
How does it appear to be moving? Are photons bouncing off of it in certain spots that rotate with time? If I ram an electron into it at high speeds, would it react? How about if I ram an electron into a spot it appeared to be a very very short time ago?
Your eyes can only see the photons that bounce off of it when it is in the same timeframes as you occupy, hence the illusion of movement. It would react if you shot an electron into it at any time as long as the electron coincided with a section where it has/will/is appearing because it exists in all of those locations simultaneously as a physical object. On the other hand the change of a charge might do very bad thing t forth dimensional objects.
The article says it actually moves.
If this Crystal is moving through the fourth dimension
Why don't I simultaneous plan to murder someone every second of his life where the crystal "stands" and then shove the crystal in his corpse. And then once I set up rhe take, knife, gun, booby traps, that would kill him a thousand times, I actually go through it. He dies a thousand times throughout time, and I have a tiny piece of the time crystal trapped in his corpse, just only 1000 "facets" of it tho. Then I tie a line (made of super string theory) to that little bit, then use a fishing rod to reel the rest of them in.
