Space
Spaceships
And probably some singing.

I'd say dramatic story, some space chivalry, a bit of mystery, and some sci-fi elements/ back drop that don't fall apart on first pass.

Coffee

Uh...
A fat lady, and singing I think?

Fancy fucking uniforms. Basically take 18th century officers wear and put them on the bridge of a starship of the line. Sabres, too, even if they're just ceremonial.

Hoes before bros.

i wish SC2 had a good story

>i dont think you have what it takes to be a killer
>she says to to JIM FUCKING RAYNOR

Badass music

Hoes come AFTER Bros!

I want officers in American civil war uniforms.

...

To be fair, Blizzard proved her right.

>Legit named gunman
Jesus, Sierra. Did you really go that creatively bankrupt after putting out The Incredible Machine?

Sierra just published it, it's Rewolf you want to blame.
>what the fuck kind of name is Rewolf, anyway?

...

Holy shit, this game is hilarious. The voice acting... Oh, you've just got to hear it.
I gotta buy this thing, just to play it and see how bad it is in person.

Their writing pretty much went downhill HARD after Warcraft 2.

>Ceremonial

"Captain, the capital has surrendered, all resistance has stopped"
-Regardless, fire the anti-matter missiles
"Captain, that's a warcrime!"
>Sabre in neck
>PSH
>NOTHING PERSONNEL KID

I disagree
T. Metzen

Weirdly-colored humanoid alien women

Species based on one schtick taken to the extreme

Space magic

Basically, hard science is ignored entirely. The science part of sci-fi is ignored to tell the story and the sci-fi elements are mostly backdrops to that story. How the photon torpedoes and teleporters in Star Trek work isn't explained because it doesn't need to be - they just exist to move the story forward.

Essentially you take a grand, massive, sweeping story of incredible heroes and struggle, and put it in space.

>buy it
Do you have HL1 on Steam?

But it did

No, I'm a titanic faggot and never got the games.
At least now I know what I need to get for my birthday.
I had planned on buying the half-life pair eventually but never got around to doing it because I'm a lazy fuck.

This isn't a "critical element" of space opera.

You're just salty for no reason.

HL series is pretty overrated desu.

Retail is standalone, but the demo has some levels not present in the retail game, and the patch to add them back in is for the Steam-converted version.

I can put up disc images of the retail version, if you want.

overrated, but undeniably good

No more so than FF7.

Space, as the setting, with a war or other conflict to drive the story/drama. Keep the science stuff simple, understandable and cool. That'll do you well.

The Expanse?

HL2 is pretty meh game once you get past for their time impressive physics and still surprisingly good facial animations.

I liked the TFT story

I mean

But you have to remember that the game came out 12 fucking years ago

at the time it was mindblowing

It's also had its engine upgraded at least twice since then.

which has very little to do with the base game.

>salty
On the contrary, I fucking love space operas.

Rather

>What's the Lt doing?
>Charging the enemy bravely, as you should have
>... But he's using that sword?
>... yes?
>... wait. you... you don't know? No one on the bridge at all?
>GET TO THE POINT, SON
>They're decorative trash, sir, they break off if you~
*distant snapping sound*

Its actually not all that bad.

A larger than life fantasy story set against a science fiction backdrop.

Don't be mad at Jim for being a cuck. Kerrigan was right: he doesn't have the stones.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes was really good; it ruined a lot of anime for me afterward.

It's a space opera in that it was sweeping and certainly epic, but it lacked some of the stuff you usually see, like themes about alien racism.

It's overrated but it's still crazy good, desu. GabeN's just not the second coming of Jesus.

No it ended up with
>Zerg are misunderstood noble savages
>Overmind is good guy
>Xel Naga are 30 foot flying octopus
>Ancient evil
>Corruption
>Prophecy of the chosen one
>Phoenix force Kerrigan
>Kamehameha Battlea
>Acturus reduced to moustache twirler

Wait, when we're the zero portrayed as noble savages? Heart of the Swarm definitely didn't portray them that way (they had motivations greater than MAIM KILL DESTROY but certainly nothing noble), and they weren't in the spotlight enough in the other games to be that way.

Planet smasher up in this bitch!

Is a story till considered a space opera if it has lot of fantasy elements to it. I've been working on a story for a few years now but I think I may have gone somewhat out of control.

That's a screenshot from star control 2 you pleb

High stakes, beautiful aesthetics and make it reminiscent of ancient Greek epics while putting an emphasis on the massive scale of the universe and the insignificance of the characters.

So essentially Homeworld.

>Set in a interstellar span of space
>Space is an Ocean
>Spaceship are ships, right down to naval ventricular and tradition even when it makes zero sense. Especially when it makes no sense
>Infantry are Space Marines from the movie ALIENS. Any NPCs are have zero personality, merely walking cliches.
>planets are ports of call, Multiple varieties of government.
>Different species have one unique trait about them, all are the same.
>Humans are the only exception, they are 'special'.
>Space Pirates?! Space Pirates.
>Alien Spaces babes are an option if you want to take the Kirk approach.

You can't blame him, he wasn't even born yet when Star Control 2 came out.

Is this actually meant to be Cyberpunk Star Wars? Who's the red masked guy on the table?

Pure oxygen at 0.2 to 0.32 bar.

nah. it's not.
Before HL, games were like Doom.

Half life was like a movie where (You) were the star.

> HL series is pretty overrated desu.
Only Half-Life 2 and onwards.
Half-Life 1 is literally one of the most fun games I've played. Yes, it has a painfully slow start, but after the resonance cascade happens the game picks up like HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

Stealing all of these for my game.

Maul

Oh thanks.

Something something I need to add Kojima to this statement.

At some point it turns into Sword and planet. Which is never a bad thing.

The memes, Jack, the memes!

See, MGS comes off as a pretentious hodgepodge stealth game with 3deep5u themes, while half life 1 had a pretty simple premise, and executed it extremely well in terms of gameplay.

Shit was always happening around you and you could try and interact with it.

I am of the opinion that HL2 should have been a complete game or at least not ended on such a fucking cliffhanger.

It's overrated in the same way that Seinfeld is overrated. It was good and original at the time but no longer stands out among the crowd of imitators.
