Steampunk that isnt Bad

Working on a world-building project with some friends.
We're thinking something like steampunk but without the absurd obsession with gears and without the Victorian aesthetic, such as pic related.
Post artwork please

well whats bad 4 u

Well faggot, what about this setting your making you think sets it apart from the cog-fop nonsense we've seen and danced to already?

so, like ?

Is it alternate history, or a fantasy world with steam technology?

...

...

Dieselpunk might be worth looking into. It usually has a more art deco design to it, which might be sleeker than what you're looking for, but still worth a shot.

basically do it with american aesthetics and it becomes awesome. Bioshock infinite is visually bonerific.

>oil burner above boiler
0/10 shit design

Polish writers "Ice" ("Lód")
>Action takes place in Russia and Poland under imperial Russian occupation
>Lots of communist talks, factory workers unionising, commie terrorist assemblying.
>Siberian "gold rush" and subsequent industrialization.
It's golden.

...

...

You could go Asian-fusion, though this picture might be more along the lines of 's
diesel-punk suggestion, given the time period.

...

...

Or you could go for an over-the-top Asian steampunk aesthetic.

...

You could also go with some sort of post-apocalyptic, after-the-oil-is-gone type of scenario in which the survivors have had to hybridize salvaged modern technology with older machinery.

...

...

...

I'm not sure if this picture is meant to represent steampunk or 40k

this one looks more like a dieselpunk to me

That's pretty good - the AT-AT's dumb design kind of works when done in a steampunk style.

>and without the Victorian aesthetic, such as pic related.
How do you mean? that's just a pretty normal steam locomotive, maybe a bit wider than a victorian one and with a couple of features that mark it as 'murrican, but there's not much difference.

...

It's basically what if (ye olde society) got access to technology that resembles IRL current-day tech in practice.

Going by the adaption of clocks in Japan and by the non-adaption of rubber in Europe until we needed car tyres, the result should be wierd and interesting rather than "HAHA COGWORKS ON HATS AND BOOTS"

Really? I thought it moved on steam.

The funny bit is that it is less dumb than many actual designs.

Post-Apoc steampunk makes the most sense to me, to honest.
If the world goes to shit and everything is fucke over, we may not have fossil fuel, but we sure as hell will have water and steam power.
Maybe even solar if get there fast enough.

no gears, and not Victorian.
>"steampunk"
I think you might not know what steampunk is.

Remember, in the steam-power era a bolt-action rifle or a Maxim was high technology.

...

Wild, Wild West

Yeah, the period from the mid nineteenth century to about the mid 1930s transport designs got really crazy while people tried to work out what worked and what didn't

>Dukaj
>Golden
Pick one

Also, this book is shit, its setting is shit and you should feel bad for promoting one of the worst books of Polish fantasy.
Besides, it has as much to do with steampunk in any form (even fucking cog-fop) as does Robinsoe Crusoe.

>Steampunk
>Isn't bad
Literally impossible. The whole thing is aesthetics with barely any content. And if it has content, then it by default is shit play, or you will turn it into cog-fop.

The Ice-technology presented in the book is an interesting twist on classical steampunk. Everything else is there - beginning of XX century, upper classes, crazy scientists, bold entrepreneurs.
In my opinion you're just shit talking.

I'm afraid that he does not shittalk. He's just another Piekara wanker that reads bad-at-best quasi-porn stuff from Fabryka Słów (or humorus but badly written Pilipiuk)and is repulsed by idea that someone may enjoy something that makes attempt at emulating good writting style.

That that common praise on ,,high intellectulaism" of Dukaj's works is undesevred is other thing.

Maybe not "high intellectualism" but I for one respect Dukaj for his original ideas for each and every book. None of it is classical fantasy or sci-fi with that poor "one twist is enough" worldbuilding mentality.

Not always. Xarwas Wyżryn, Lód and few others are one twist, good twist and nice, new one, yet still not that godlike stuff. Of course, when compared to most Polish conterporary fantasy literature, it grades favourably.

Okay, now I really want to make a not!asia setting with the typical mist covered mountains, except the mist is all smog and steam. Extensive rail networks to connect the towns and castles that sit on the mountains above the smog layer.

I think it could be amazing

>tfw no steampunk vietnam war analogue in africa where the redcoats tasked with putting down a native uprising
>no redcoats in dirigibles blasting natives with maxim guns while gromaphone on the background blasts german opera music
>no domestic socialist motivate strikes against unfair taxation and war that get brutally put down by bobbies
>instead it is always le wacky lord coghat and his merry band of cog-loving misfits

Well, considering that #1 and #3 actually happened, I think most people just haven't bothered to learn history.

Doesn't even need to be in africa, it's not like the euros weren't messing about in asia too - the vietnam war started with the french, after all

I don't have art, but I can contribute writing given a basic overview.

Oh shit, I remember this game, it was fun. I can't seem to find a online version to buy though.

First, learn how to use this board.
Second, why all Poles have this fucking problem with everyone not being with them, must then instantly be labelled as their enemy and by extension - supporter of some other group? Be it politics, sports or trashy, right-wing fantasy. What? A nation of morons that only can operate in binary, creating retarded and pointless division?

Both Piekara and Dukaj suck flaccid cocks. The only good writer that happend to your country post-war was Lem. And I'm betting a fiver he's completely forgotten and ignored in his homeland.

...

>Let's make good steampunk to avoid cog fop
>Misses the point of steampun instead
And this is kids why there is no such thing like non-sucking steampunk

>classical steampunk
>beginning of XX century
>upper classes
>crazy scientists
>bold entrepreneurs.
Son, you have no fucking clue what steampunk is.

> Author of the Star Diaries
> ignored and forgotten

As for post-war stuff user, there is this one Polish series, it's a little obscure, called The Witcher Saga. I'd recommend looking into it. I hear they're making it a game.
