That was Ahriman. Magnus was initially satisfied with just letting the wolves roll in and take him. Ahriman felt betrayed by this, told Magnus to go fuck himself, and took the whole legion to war instead of standing down and making scarce.

It was only at the end, when his legion was about destroyed, and all the civilians were genocided that Magnus went "Fuck it, everyone is getting killed, time to put the dog down"
