There are conflicting sources, afaik. Both arabic; one described them as filthy and barbaric whilst the other did the opposite. I believe they encountered two diffrent groups of "vikings" (which is a profession more than anything) which might explain the discrepancy.
I'm not a historian by any means though, I'm just repeating what I've read on the subject (or rather; what little I can remember).
