It is 117 years since the Battle of Modder River (known in Afrikaans as Slag van die Twee Riviere), an engagement in the Second Boer War of 1899-1902. A British column under Lord Methuen, which was attempting to relieve the besieged town of Kimberley, forced Boers under General Piet Cronje to retreat to Magersfontein; but suffered heavy casualties themselves. It was a rough introduction for British forces to the new style of warfare on the veldt.

When the war broke out the previous month, one of the Boers' early targets was the diamond-mining centre of Kimberley, which stood not far from where the borders of the Boer Republics and the British-controlled Cape Colony met. Although their forces surrounded the town, they did not press home any immediate assault, nor did they attempt to invade Cape Colony.

Meanwhile, British reinforcements were on their way to South Africa. Their commander, General Sir Redvers Buller detached the 1st Division under Lieutenant General Lord Methuen to relieve the Siege of Kimberley. This decision was made partly for reasons of prestige, as the capture of Kimberley would be a major propaganda victory for the British. Methuen's force advanced north along the Western Cape Railway.

The Boers had been reinforced by a contingent from the Transvaal under General Koos de la Rey, who proposed a radical new plan of defence. He pointed out that the Boers had previously been easily driven from the kopjes (hills) which they had occupied. The kopjes had been obvious aiming marks for the numerically superior British artillery. Also, the trajectory of rifle fire from Boers on the top of the kopjes was steeply plunging. It therefore had a chance of hitting its target only in the last six feet or so of its flight. Once British infantry had reached the foot of the kopje, they were concealed by boulders and scrub, and could then easily drive the Boers off the summit with the bayonet.

De la Rey proposed to make use of the flat trajectory of the Mauser rifle with which the Boers were armed, together with the flat veld. He called on his men to dig trenches in the banks of the Modder River, from which their rifles could sweep the veld for a great distance, and won them over. General Piet Cronje, who arrived later with the main Boer force, acquiesced in this novel plan.

The area contained two prominent hotels and the village of Rosmead, which was used as a resort by prominent businessmen from Kimberley. The Boer trenches were on the south side of the Modder and the smaller Riet River which joined it at Modder River Station. The Boers had six field guns and one Maxim "pom-pom" (small rapid-firing gun) from the Orange Free State's Staatsartillerie. They deployed these not as a concentrated battery, but as widely separated individual gun detachments north of the Modder and to the east. They had dug several emplacements for each gun, allowing their guns to switch position to avoid counter-battery fire.

Methuen's force consisted of two infantry brigades (the Guards Brigade under Major-General Sir Henry Edward Colville and the 9th Brigade under Major-General Reginald Pole-Carew), two mounted regiments, three batteries of field artillery and four guns of the Naval Brigade. Further reinforcements were arriving up the railway.

The British cavalry (the 9th Lancers and a unit recruited in Cape Town, Rimington's Guides), made some attempts to scout the ground ahead of the army, but failed entirely to detect De la Rey's trenches and other preparations. (For example, the Boers had whitewashed stones on the veld or had placed biscuit tins as range markers). At 4:30 am on 28 November, Methuen's force roused itself, deployed into line and began advancing towards the Modder, with no plans other than to cross the river before having breakfast on the far side.

As the British troops came within 1,200 yards (1,100 m) of the river, Methuen remarked to Colville, "They're not here." Colville replied, "They're sitting uncommonly tight if they are". At this point the Boers opened fire. Most of the British troops were forced to throw themselves flat. Some tried to advance in short rushes, but could find no cover on the veld. Few British troops got closer than 1,000 yards (910 m) to the Boers. The Guards tried to outflank the Boer left, but were unable to ford the Riet River. The British guns pounded the buildings near Modder River Station and the line of poplar trees which marked the north bank of the Modder, and entirely missed the enemy trenches on the south bank. Meanwhile, the Boer guns maintained a galling fire, and kept in action by repeatedly moving their positions.

The battle became a day-long stalemate. Most of the British infantry lay prone on the veld, tortured by heat and thirst, but safe from enemy fire unless they moved. Many stoically smoked pipes or even slept. Methuen galloped about the field trying to renew the advance, and was himself wounded. At midday, some of Pole-Carew's 9th Brigade found the open Boer right flank at Rosmead Ford downstream. British infantry infiltrated across the ford and about 1:00 pm drove the Boers out. The attack was disjointed, and suffered casualties when a British field artillery battery which had just arrived on the field shelled them by mistake. By nightfall, De la Rey had driven them back into a small insecure bridgehead. Nevertheless, the Boers feared that they were now vulnerable to being outflanked, and withdrew during the night.

The British lost between 450 and 480 and were forced to pause for ten days. On the Boer side, there were about 80 casualties, including Adriaan, the eldest son of de la Rey, mortally wounded by a shell.

The Second Boer War has a lot of potential for wargaming, with high mobility and dramatic changes in general strategy. A Boer player has few troops but intense lethality, while the British player has the numbers but lacks the co-ordination to use them fully. Featherstone (ever the Victorian wars buff) wrote a chapter on the subject - pdf related - which contains a specific scenario of Modder River.

It is 36 years since Operation Morvarid (Persian for "Pearl"), an operation launched by the Iranian Navy and Air Force against the Iraqi Air Defence sites on 28 November 1980 in response to Iraq positioning radar and monitoring equipment on the Al-Bakr and Khor-al-Amaya oil rigs to counter Iranian air operations. The operation resulted in a victory for Iran, which managed to destroy both oil rigs as well as much of the Iraqi Navy and inflicted significant damage to Iraqi ports and airfields.

On 28 November 1980, Iranian F-4 Phantoms and F-5 Tiger IIs attacked Iraqi airfields around Basra. They managed to destroy one Iraqi MiG-21 Fishbed on the ground. During the night of the 29th, six ships of the Iranian Navy's Task Force 421 deployed marines on the Iraqi oil terminals at Mina al Bakr and Khor-al-Amaya. The marines, supported by Army Aviation's AH-1J Cobras, Bell 214s and CH-47C Chinooks, gunned down most Iraqi defenders during a short firefight, then deployed a large number of bombs and mines. They were then evacuated by helicopter and left the Iraqi oil installations and early warning bases in flames.

At the same time, two Iranian Kaman class missile boats (Paykan and Joshan) blocked the ports of Al Faw and Umm Qasr, blocking 60 foreign ships and shelling both facilities. In response the Iraqi Navy deployed P-6 torpedo boats and Osa II class fast-attack craft for a counter-attack. The boats engaged the two Iranian missile boats which managed to sink two Osas with Harpoon missiles. The remaining three Osa class missile boats continued to attack the missile boat Paykan. The crew of the "Paykan" called IRIAF for help which sent two F-4s (each armed with six AGM-65 Maverick missiles). By the time they arrived, however, the Paykan had been sunk after being hit by two Iraqi P-15 Termit missiles. In response, the F-4s targeted the remaining Iraqi ships and sunk three Osa IIs and four P-6s.

Soon another four Iranian F-4s arrived from Shiraz Air Base, bombed the port of Al Faw, and, together with F-5s, destroyed the surrounding Iraqi SAM sites. One Iranian F-4 was hit by an Iraqi SA-7 surface-to-air missile but managed to return to base.

Now Iranian F-14 Tomcat formations joined the battle and, together with several F-4s, covered the withdrawal of Task Force 421 and bombed the Iraqi oil rigs, destroying an Iraqi Aérospatiale Super Frelon helicopter. After this, they attacked the Mina al Bakr terminal. The Iraqis scrambled seven MiG-23 Floggers to defend the terminal. Iranian F-4s then engaged the Iraqi MiG-23MSs and downed three. One Iranian F-4 was downed during the battle. Four Iraqi MiG-23BNs attacked the Joshan, which managed to shoot two down with SA-7 missiles. Shortly after, an Iranian F-14 downed one of the two surviving MiGs, forcing the last one to flee.

The destruction of Iraqi SAM sites and radar and monitoring equipment made it possible for the IRIAF to attack via southern Iraq again. The Iranian missile boat Joshan which took part in this operation was later sunk during Operation Praying Mantis by U.S. Navy warships.

This month's community project is a food/drink-related mini or unit.

Finnish Soldier vs Soviet Soldier: Winter War 1939-1940 (Osprey Combat 21 )

The Winter War was supposed to be a quick and easy conflict; instead it proved to be a bitter war that destroyed the international reputation of the Soviet Red Army. The diminutive Finnish force was desperately outnumbered by almost half a million Russian troops, but rather than sweeping across their neighbours the Soviet troops stumbled blindly, constantly wrong-footed and then bloodied by their seemingly insignificant foe. Drawing on a wide range of sources this study looks at three key battles, drawing a stark contrast between the poorly prepared Russian troops and the Finns, who made excellent use of terrain and innovative guerrilla tactics as they defended their homeland. Detailed maps and specially commissioned artwork highlight key moments in the Winter War, a David-and-Goliath conflict that saw the Soviet Union suffer horrendous losses as they tried to recover from each disastrous defeat.

That would be an excellent start if you wanted to get into hex-and-counter, yes. I always suggest the formula of "pick a period, pick a scale, pick a ruleset".

Hey thanks for taking the time to write up a historical summary every thread. It would be easy to just post the link library but you go above and beyond picking out a conflict and doing a write up about it

Gonna need some more detail...what's your most interesting time period/conflict? Are you interested in a skirimish with 30 or so guys per side or do you want to command a tank division?

Tell us what your ideal thing would be and someone here can probably reccomaned a game for it.

krigetkommer.weebly.com/red-cavalry

Very cool blog about a guy converting a bunch of soviet cavalry in 28mm for use with Chain of Command. he invents his own cavalry rules and playtests them, and makes some really great minis (and nicely painted too) some battle reports and lessons learned, as well as the conversion process. Very cool!

Stumbled across it researching cossack uniforms and equipment in WW2 - just got a box of 1/72 Revell cossacks and I was wondering if the cloaks are a bit much... None of the photos I can find of cossacks in ww2 feature cloaks

Zama 202 BC: Scipio Crushes Hannibal in North Africa (Osprey Campaign 299)

The battle of Zama, fought across North Africa around 202 BC, was the final large-scale clash of arms between the world's two greatest western powers of the time - Carthage and Rome. The engagement ended the Second Punic War, waged from 218 until 201 BC. The armies were led by two of the most famous commanders of all time - the legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal, renowned for crossing the Alps with his army into Italy, and the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio, who along with his father was among the defeated at the battle of Cannae in 216 BC.

They're fun to do, nice to know it's appreciated

Ugh, fucking lulu. "Hey here's a black friday 33% off deal!" *orders some wargaming shit* "Hey here's a cyber monday 40% off deal!"

don't do that shit, at least wait for christmas you fuckers.

I finally caved and bought a box of Italian airborne and a M13/40 for Bolt Action. Can't decide if I should paint them as Folgore in North Africa or Nembo in Italy. Any suggestions?

paint two of them as mario and luigi

see how long it takes people to notice

youtube.com/watch?v=vtKKJSfYraU

Mario and Luigi are proud Italian-Americans.

Honestly anything from Napoleon to WWII would do it for me. As for scale, I think Operational level would be great, so yeah a tank division would be just right.

Any advice on finding good far east miniature lines? Feudal Japan, China, etc?

turn your italians into post-liberation italians who fought on the allies side then.

anybody knows if something is wrong with warforge/dreamforge miniatures as they are on mega-sale right now:
31 models (28mm) for 6.50 instead of 26.25$
dreamforge-games.com/products/wgf-w2003-wwii-russian-infantry-28mm

also have Wehrmacht and GIs.

Furthermore anyone from euroland to share shipping costs with. (This is from USA, gave me ~24$ shipping for two boxes)

I bought some. their poses are a bit static. And a few look like they are off balance and falling down-ish

But I suspect they are trying to get rid of backstock. because I believe (not 100% sure) that Warlord bought the rights to their WW2 lines in an effort to cut out competitors.

What is Black Friday.

Hex & counter is pretty well suited to that, you find a lot of operational-level games there. The Strategy & Tactics folder would probably be a good start; browse the titles to see if any stand out for you. There's good stuff in the Avalon Hill/SPI folders too, and although 1980s/WW3 is later than you mentioned, GDW's Third World War is a great game at this scale.

Miniatures-wise you want to buy a whole bunch of 6mm and find a good ruleset!

Need to narrow down the period and scale there a bit, user.

How would they otherwise trick you into buying more of their stuff?

Thanksgiving.
((((Clever shop owner)))) from USA made it a huge shopping event with large discounts and special offers etc. Thanks to Amazon and other International Companies it slowly spreads over to Europe as well.

And the Monday after Black Friday is called "Cyber Monday" with special offers from Online Stores. (which had the same black friday offers like the brick&mortar stores as well).

Basically a whole weekend of large discounts.

Shapeways has a promo right now, for anyone interested.

>SMALLBIZMONDAY for 25% off everything, plus free shipping

If I had any cash I could spend on myself right now, I'd be buying more ships.

So I have 1 box of each late medieval Perry miniatures set. I have a lot of medieval dudesmen now and I am still shopping around for a system to play with them. Can anybody recommend me anything?

Lords & Servants

Deus Vult

Is the price based on the volume of plastic or set by the designer? A lot of the 6mm stuff is more expensive than GHQ for lower quality

What's the secret Santa email address? Taken me a week to finally make my mind up.

...

Thank you.

It's based on volume and quality of material. The biggest draw of shapeways is finding things that other people don't make, particularly in the scale you're looking at. Quality of sculpts also varies wildly by designer, so there's that too.

Is Deus Vult good for the War of the Roses era?

There is an army list for free download on their website, maybe you can see if you like it from that

fireforge-games.com/downloads/download/3-deus-vult-armi-lists/24-war-of-the-roses

Thanks buddy, too bad they don't have any official preview's up on their site.

Chevauchee!

Allready own and play it but I own about 140 miniatures now and I'd like a system where I can field larger amounts of models

Impetus!

i accidentally ordered cougar 6x6 MRAPs rather than ILAV ones and they are huuuuge. Unsure if I should still use them

Those aren't really Dreamforge, they're Wargames Factory. Not great miniatures IIRC, but servicable if you paint them, and for that price, if you don't have to deal with international shipping then it's a steal.

To The Strongest!. Yes, the ! is part of the title, I know, it's dumb.

Really want him to come out with a C18 Horse & Musket version of it, or a fantasy one. It looks really good with nice big 28mm units, but scales down handily to whatever you have, because grid.

First you have to talk about Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a day the United States celebrates in order to remember the Native americans sharing with them, and teaching them about the 3 sisters (Beans, corn and squash or something).
To celebrate this they each eat 2 Turkeys, 4 Yams, a pound of sweet potatoes 3 pounds of mashed potato and 1 and a half Pecan Pies. After this, unable to move, the American male starts watching American football on his 46" TV. Tom Brady's butt looks great on this 46" TV but he cannot shake the feeling that it would look even better on Steve from down the road's 48" TV. This feeling grows throughout the 8 hours it takes to watch an NFL game, and after all his wife keeps telling him how much difference 2" makes. He voices the idea of getting a 48" TV, which his wife agrees with; after all Steve from down the road's wife is always trying to prove how much better and wealthier and happier they are, which they aren't. At least they wouldn't be if they had a 48" TV.

So the next day when their bodies are finally metabolising the 12,500 calories they ate the previous day they are filled with energy and wake at 3am in order to go shopping. At the shop there are about 50 people after each 48" television so some savvy marketing director somewhere halved the price and give it to whomever survives the melee in their shop.

Being successful the American family sits at home thinking about how glum Steve from down the road will be when they find out that they too have a 48" TV. This feeling will dissipate when they next see Steve from down the road and his wife and discover that on black friday they in fact bought a 50" TV and Tom Brady's ass does in fact look incredible on it.

Thinking this was a great idea for selling wargames models, various companies (Europeans who just don't get how important the 3 sisters were to watching TV) slapped about 15% off of shit resin tank sculpts that no one buys as well as free shipping and called it a day.

cyber monday is basically the same, but for people sitting at a computer in an office on monday morning

it was a sarcastic question you mongs

Hush. No sarcasm, only capitalism.

wait, what's that sound... in the distance, it sounds like... T-34 engines?

sarcasm is for losers

Lions rampant.

It was a gameshow reference in actuality.

Just in case you already sent a mail: I didn't get anything. Pls resend.

Could you guys tell me a bit about the system?

It's men doing fights.
Hot diggety

Impetus in summary:
It's one of those wargames that covers a wide era of history in a way that lets you match up whatever you want, more or less. There's points costs and a focus on tight rules but it manages to do this without becoming too dry or lacking in historical 'flavour' appropriate to each army. The rules are concise and well supported with supplements, including one specifically for fighting a not-War of the Roses campaign. It's not because it's not a a set of purely historical refights, but a system for generating your own.

System-wise the rules are pretty simple, with a few stats and using D6s for rolls. The turn system alternates between the players but with the twist of each side having to nominate the commander they're trying to activate and seeing if they get to first, so that armies with better commanders have a possible advantage in initiative. The game treats units as a whole, there's no individual casualty removal and units suffer from disruption and loss of fighting capability as they take damage. You probably won't be destroying units outright with just shooting in the game. It's designed to play fast, a good battle taking somewhere between an hour and 2 hours depending on the size. Base sizes don't matter too much as long as you're using the same kind of frontage for units on each side.

Overall, it's definitely one of the better examples of game design out there; not overly cluttered, well organised and with a clear intent behind the system and the aspects of warfare it focuses on, and despite covering a wide timescale, doesn't feel too generic in how things operate, and does so without ladling on special rules for everything. There's also a free version called Basic Impetus that compresses the rules right down, cuts out a lot of depth (especially in army construction), but is also good in it's own way. Either way, it's in the OP download folders: mediafire.com/folder/28i9gevqws518/Impetus

Just played my first naval game with the WW2 rules that get talked about here.

Both sides approaching, the North Carolina and it DD escorts make a 90 degree turn to open up the full battery of the North carolina while the Scharnhorst and Bulcher tried to close the distance. NC get the ranged shot, and rapid fires into the Scharnhorst. Get 7 hits with the 16 inch guns.

The Scharnhorst is dead in the water, Bulcher and DD tried to lay smoke, DD is promptly sunk by the North Carolina. Germans leave the battle, and the Scharnhorst is sunk as it is a inmobile burning wreck.

Bad day for the German fleet.

Is that all in just one turn? That does not seem right really, I don't think the main guns of the NC have the Rapid Fire rule, and once you have ranged in you cannot shoot again in the same turn since that would be a second attack activation?

No, not in one turn. That was me summing up about 5 turns of combat.

Rapid fire = the firing for full effect once it ranged, might of used wrong term.

Round 1 - both sides steam to each other. Out of range.
Round 2 - in range, US fleet makes a 90 degrees to Port. Both sides trying to range in.
Round 3 - Still ranging in, Germans closings
Round 4 - USS North Carolina gets range. can fire for full effect.
Round 5 - Scharnhorst gets Rekted by lucky rolls.
Round 6 - German DDs try to make smoke screen, DD hit and sunk.
Round 7 - German fleet flees, US fleet does not give chase.

I especially like it for covering Sengoku Japan post-Tanegashima, unlike a lot of similar wargames which usually stop at covering Japan right before they get firearms.

Yeah, Rapid Fire is a rule that most all guns below 6" have that allows them to fire at full ROF without ranging in, and also do so in the indirect activations phase. That's where the confusion is coming from.

Aw yeah son

North Carolina class may not have been as relentless a rape train as the Iowa class was, but it was still not a ship type to fuck with.

Here's the slight problem in having just battleships and a few destroyers: once that BB is gone, their side is in serious trouble.
Also, expensive single ships can be quite vulnerable to those lucky hits to important stuff.

If you ever get the opportunity, go visit The Showboat. I've been twice, and I'd like to go again.

okay thanks, I was reporting in and not looking at the rules - my mistake and apologies.

Yep, I have been to the North Carolina a few times. Great ship.

That is true in general, but I wanted to just test the rules so I had a small manageable fight. Felt bad for the DD that was impacted by two 16 inch shells.

Americans seemed to have had knack for building pretty good boats.
>when japs&brits&krauts ran around with nonsensical turret arrangements for their bbs yanks went straight for 2 pairs of superfiring turrets
>actually figured out how to build pretty decent heavy cruisers within the treaty limitations

Auch for the DD :)

For testing the rules it is indeed easier to just go with a big ship to get a feeling for the rules mechanics.

Just because you spelled it wrong both times, I'd guess it's the Blucher, not the Bulcher. That being said I don't know anything about battleships, just 19th Century Prussian military figures.

Yeah, he meant Blucher terrified horses.

She was an Admiral Hipper class heavy cruiser.

Anybody got any experience for DBM? Will it suit me?

Dumb joke incoming

Yes, meant the Blucher, who in real life was lost to a Norwegian fort at the Battle of Drobak Sound.

I'd do the matchup again if I were you, and this time try different tactics on the Scharnhorst

- Scharnhorst has a 20cm range advantage, so start the fight using that together with the 'Stroke of luck" order to increase your chances to range in. Then once ranged in use the "Fatal hit" order to increase the puny damage of those 11" guns.
- Once NC closes the range, change tactics and charge him head on using 'flank speed' and either 'evasive action' or 'breakout' (preferable) to mitigate damage while trying to get into torpedo range with the DD's and the BB while Scharnhorst tanks the damage and kills the escorting DD's.

That should give him a fighting chance, although it will still be an uphill battle trying to defeat 16" guns with a 11" gunned BB :)

Will be the first to say the Scharnhorst was REALLY unlucky. Getting hit by Six plus sixteen inch shells in one volley is going to be a bad day no matter the ship.

The Original German plan was to close in, and hae the Blucher and DD engage the American DDs, while the Scharnhorst fought the NC, then once the DD was gone, have the Blucher join in and have the DDs go in for torpedo runs.

Might have to try your tactics again sometime. Also might try teaching one of my buddies to play it so we can run a game.

I agree, I really enjoyed this one and am going to look up more about this conflict. Don't know much about this conflict

And Scharnhorst was amusingly lost in a surface action not that dissimilar to this one, except the battle was against the 14'' gunned HMS Duke of York, and the Scharnhorst lasted a lot longer, being finished off by torpedoes from the Duke of York's escorting DDs after taking a mauling from the British battleship's guns.

"Getting hit by Six plus sixteen inch shells in one volley is going to be a bad day no matter the ship."

Doesn't NC have a total broadside of RoF 6 in the game (Rof 4 front, Rof 2 Rear)? How can he be hit 6+ times in one volley?

Some 1:72 Mujahideen for Force on Force because I don't have anything to contribute to the boat related talk.

Model Collect is going to start producing 1/72 infantry

If it wasn't clear, I was posting from memory, the entire volley hit. You are correct, it is 6, so 6(+) would be more correct.

You are speaking to the same person who used "Rapid fire" incorrectly. I am sorry I am not exact enough for you.

What material are they using? Resin?

No problem at all, I'm sorry if I'm being too exact, just trying to figure out if its really an outlier or if something was played the wrong way. :) Your report and notes are very much appreciated by the designer.

they were all reequipped in British uniforms

Impetus has a flow and interaction somewhat similar to DBM, but you will be rolling 5-10 dice instead of a single die (which I enjoy). There is quite a bit more depth to unit variation than DBM (even with Basic Impetus).

I think it's great for folks familiar with DBM or DBA. You can stick a couple of DBM bases together (or just use them as is) to have an Impetus unit.

I usually play on a small (70x120 cm table) with 60mm wide bases and it gives a good game on that with Basic or 400 points.

Unless you hate rolling a bunch of dice, you should like it. Check out Basic Impetus, it's free and you'll see for yourself if it is to your taste.

No problem - in that case, as a note, the Scharnhorst was still afloat at the end of the session, just that it was dead in the water, on fire, and the rest of the German fleet was fleeing, so it was adjudicated as it was going to be sunk, I did not spend the time putting the final rounds in as it was a test game.

As said, it was a very lucky volley with all 16 inch guns hitting home.

Also, I will also reserve the right to admit I did something wrong, as I am learning the rules still. I might run the same one again and keep a log for the designer.

Decided on the list I'm taking for this weekend's Blucher Tournament.

200 points of Austrians;
2 Grenadiers
2 Veteran Infantry
4 Conscript Infantry/Grenz
4 Landwehr
2 Cuirassiers
1 Hussar
2 Other Cavalry
2 Insurrection Hussars
3 Massed Foot Artillery

I'm not sure if it will be good, but it's certainly got almost everything the Austrian army list has access to.

Thanks for the info buddy

Damn nice man! Impressive considering 1/72
Who are they going to be up against? 70s Soviets? please say 70s soviets

I hope they do some modern Ukrainian and pro Russian forces - would be an interesting conflict to fight

Update on my syria/iraq terrain.

How do I break into historical war gaming? Every store in the area (Central KY) is Warhammer and War Machine. With a small minority of Flames of War. I'm not opposed to chit and hex but would prefer miniature war gaming. Esp 28mm for infantry games.

TLDR : collect your own figs and learn the rules, meet people and play demo games with friends.

Find some buddies and see if they'd be interested, make some friends at hobby stores, and introduce them to whatever system you're interested in, recently got a few buddies of mine into Bolt Action since they like history.

Also introducing people from a local store into a few different historical system.

Honestly, just start collecting, get a collection going, most people I get in are just from, giving them a display- demo type game with all my figures, kinda capture their imagination.

You cant underestimate what a nice board and fully painted armies can do.

I see these amazing historical games being played at cons. Is historical war gaming something you only do at cons unless you live in a large well populated urban area? Board gaming, card games and sci-fi and fantasy war gaming rules supreme.

Oi, how deep into KY are you? Cincinnati BattleTech is branching out into Bolt Action, which seems to be right about where your point of interest is.

Check facebook for clubs in your area. Maybe join groups for historical games that interest you and ask if someone is from around your area.
