Why would you listen to lindybeige?
There are much better educated people on almost every subject he talks about, with the possible exception of dancing.
AaaGaaaagHHGGG
Lindybeige makes me so angry
What a cuck
people move at different rates in real life, how would you abstract someone getting the first strike?
>Initiative system doesn't reflect reality
Well no shit, neither does D&D combat in general.
He's very charismatic and interesting to listen to.
Hearing differing opinions can be interesting.
Lindybiege is usually pretty wrong about Veeky Forums related stuff but he at least presents his points in a way I can enjoy listening to. Rather him than Spoony screeching for two hours about one point that he lost half an hour ago.
>People still get triggered over Lindy
>Just jealous he's started making money off being a walking incarnation of Veeky Forums autism before any of us did.
Sure is /k/ in here.
Seriously though, he's interesting to listen to, and he never pretended to be a specialist.
I mean the nigga literally took shitposting to the papers.
>Lindybeige
No, he's wrong. And what's more, he's going to derive a tooth-grinding amount of smug satisfaction from being wrong.
>lindybeige
>interesting to listen to
fuck off back to Veeky Forums
while I'm not a huge fan of initiative, it's a simple functional solution to simulating event order
people don't just stand there while enemies run at them, sure. But if you could run away, no one would be able to reach anyone, because you'd approach someone, who'd just run away. So you'd have to implement some incremental enemy chasing system. Why do so many systems use initiative? Because 9 times out of 10 they'll be implemented successfully while an enemy chasing system will not.
your ability to run away from foes is simulated by your move action. You could cast a spell and run, or run over and cast a spell. Many systems incorporate reactions, but this just makes them slower and more rules heavy, not simpler and often not even that much more realistic
I may want to know more about the picture you posted, did he pretend to be an academic so he could shitpost irl or something?
Show me on the doll where lindy touched your black lotus with cheeto fingers.
I don't remember the backstory desu, I remember people on /k/ started another reeeeeee thread about him and someone brought it up.
I mean, I'm not going to lie, the sheer amount of triggering he causes on Veeky Forums is pretty funny to me. Especially since he is basically just an autist
>Is he right Veeky Forums?
Not really?
I mean, reality isn't turn based, obviously, but D&D is an abstraction, it's not supposed to represent reality.
What's more, beyond just being an abstraction it's also a magic power fantasy, it's a world where killing enough goblins will magically give you the ability to take twice as many mace blows to the head and to survive falls from 200 feet.
He used to work at a university and actually wrote a paper on why vegetarians should be force fed lard, then lost his job over it IIRC.
The backstory is even better than the picture holy shit, the absolute madman.
>Vegetarians should be force-fed lard
Man speaks the truth
>Lindybeige
>Being right
Pick one
He is right from time to time, it's just that he only ever repeats what other people who actually know their shit have said before while being smug about it.
I still occasionally watch his videos because he's good at presenting the ideas and because I like how butthurt he makes some people.
No
he's right
the initiative system makes it impossible for anyone to play a proper Frenchman
Reminder that Lindybeige claims:
>no one used swords, axes
>no one used horses
>no one used throwing knives
>no one used double strap arm shields
>no one used scythes
>no one used mail coifs
>no one used torches
>Pikemen didn't fight each other
>no one spoke French during the French revolution
>no one spoke Latin during the Roman Republic
>battle of Zama didn't happen
>Romans carried one pilum
>Vikings weren't real
>berserkers weren't real
>climate change isn't real
>stagnant social mobility isn't real
>castles were defended by three soldiers
>butted mail is better than riveted mail
>operation market garden was a success
>Napoleon was literally Hitler
>climate change isn't real
>battle of Zama didn't happen
err what? source for those two?
His channel.
You know it's shit like this that convinces me that Lindy is alright, it's just that his detractors are literal retards who couldn't identify a rhetorical argument if it bit their testicles off.
He really is /our guy/.
Precisely.
fuck that literally autistic shit
>hundreds of videos on "his channel"
>fuck off shitlord, google it, it's not my job to educate you
Congratulations, you've reached the argumentation level of tumblr.
Not him, but you do know about this "google" website, right?
>Vegeterians should be force-fed lard
He actually got fired from the university he was working because of that as well as being a climate change denier, a holocaust denier and some other things.
Off the top of my head, the Zama one is rubbish. He did a video discussing someone else's theory that it didn't happen and laid out the argument, but stated several times throughout that he did not agree with it, just thought it was an interesting idea.
>denier
That's wrong though.
He advocates skepticism of all things, and those are included; the climate change video is oooold, and his views on the holocaust are a measured evaluation of what evidence we have. He never denies that it happened, only questions how it did.
Nope, this is one of his "Miss" video.
The point he makes about half-elves is probably the only one good when it comes to the hobby. And this video can be best summed up with pic related
>a holocaust denier
What?
He has a video in which he argues that referring to "the six million" is an insult because the actual death toll was so much higher. That's literally the opposite of denying it.
He is right once per about 7 videos.
This is part of the remaining 6, since quite recently he had highly-competent videos about platoons and companies.
>Implying Veeky Forums isn't the biggest hate club of his
But in [current year] even if you question this stuff you're labelled as a one
It's as bad as his rules for running and chases - a clear indication he never played anything else than D&D, probably back in times of AD&D, and can't even imagine different games than D&D
His "Escalation" video was also pretty good, since he summed up murderhobos without pointing fingers or calling anyone names, while making it clear why such attitude is just plain retarded
Without watching the video I can answer - no.
>armchair general/nerd
>interest in sometimes rather obscure things
>generates massive amounts of butthurt by having the wrong opinion on everything
>really smug about it
>in spite of all this, sometimes he makes interesting arguments though
He really is /ourguy/
And I like his reviews of terrible movie fighting, like webm related
The holocaust video (which he has since said he changed his mind about) basically says that we need to remember the millions of non-jews as well
The climate change videos boil down to a video where he argues against one of the arguments for action due to it being a fallacy, not because of climate change itself, and a video where he argues that methane is more of an issue than carbon dioxide.
>Lindybeige
>Talking about games
Then I know already he's wrong. It never cease to amaze me he's still trying, but then I recall the infamous cavalry clickbait and everything clicks in.
I miss times before he realised he can just make more money by triggering people
Like the guy but think he's often wrong about things.
I don't think he understands that the system is crafted in a way as to be controllable by the GM.
I agree.
He said in a video while researching the battle of Zama to help with a graphic novel being funded on kickstarter that basically he realised there was no archaeological evidence for it and it was probably made up.
I work for a helpline that provides support to victims of abuse or discrimination. I had to tell someone to leave after induction because she disrupted it by downplaying the other victims of the holocaust and acting like discrimination against Jews is worse than any other discrimination. Even though everyone was pointing out all the others who were killed in the camps.
I think he has the exact same problem as Yahtzee had when he still cares - they both present their arguments in such way that people are already pissed half-way there, before they even make the point, so rather than listen the actual video and point, they already rage about stupid argumentation and other shit.
Plus he's making clickbaits now anyway, just recall the cavalry video from what? Two months ago? The argument was right, the points were right... but before he get there, he made a trigger-heavy rant for 15 minutes.
Reminder you have a serious problem with listening to argumentation and comprehension of what is said in your or any general direction.
>which he has since said he changed his mind about
source?
His other videos, his page, the works?
It's not that hard to know if you are following him at least semi-regularly
My general experience with his historical videos is pretty simple so far:
>If it is about British Isles or Brits, he's right
>If it's related to British Isles or Brits, he might be right
>If he's talking about stuff unrelated with British Isles or Brits, he's so fucking wrong Jesus Christ how is it even possible?!
Reminder he made a claim sabres weren't used or useful in his sabre video. And I've got an answer to an email quite recently (took him month to answer, but he did), where he didn't change his stance a fucking inch, still being dead-sure sabres are just a meme, especially when dismounted.
It looks like he's never played twilight 2013
He has 523 videos and in his website there are many articles. I watched almost all his videos over the years but I don't remember him saying that. Do you expect me to re-watch all that again and start reading all his articles, comments, etc? If you don't remember yourself where exactly it is that's all right but don't act like a smartass.
Could you post his email answer here?
>no one used swords, axes
Clearly not
>no one used horses
The idea was more "the first guy to ride horses for war must have been crazy" in much the same vein as the hoary old "how decided cheese was a good idea" showerthought
>no one used throwing knives
They're not a weapon of war, people wouldn't be likely to carry them for personal defence, they aren't a hunting tool, rocks work just as well deterring pursuit. Of course people may throw knives.
>no one used double strap arm shields
They're not as good, he asserts.
>no one used scythes
They aren't a real battlefield weapon until modified
>no one used mail coifs
Nobody used unpadded mail coifs
>no one used torches
No, torches are just bad compared to the common conception, and for most purposes candles are easier to use.
>Pikemen didn't fight each other
Pikemen are not the best counter to pikemen and should not meet in competently-directed battle
>no one spoke French during the French revolution
What
>no one spoke Latin during the Roman Republic
this is too nuanced, but that's not what he said
>battle of Zama didn't happen
Well, maybe. there's discussion to be had as to what DID happen
>Romans carried one pilum
OK, fair
>Vikings weren't real
No, not what he said
>berserkers weren't real
Not as depicted in modern media
>climate change isn't real
Conceded, he is retarded about anything more modern than the the Age of Sail
>stagnant social mobility isn't real
when did he say this?
>castles were defended by three soldiers
Castles are a massive force multiplier
>butted mail is better than riveted mail
when?
>operation market garden was a success
Good thing the Fuhrer didn't hear him say that, he'd be shot! Oh wait.
>Napoleon was literally Hitler
Well, he was a dick.
Wis does make more sense for initiative then dex. Add to this dex normally just has to much damn shit that runs off in most systems.
Perhaps there is some time period for which he has a clue about how things were done in the Islands, but as your own sabre example shows, the 18th-19th centuries sure as fuck ain't it.
As someone who grew up in suburban South England, this kind of car-boot-sale, pub-archery-team, Red-Dwarf-rerun dude triggers a deep deep animosity in me I didn't even know I had
Saving this for future use!
It's a game, things are made abstract for the sake of fun. If I wanted things to be realistic I'd slather myself in olive oil and stick my fingers up another mans ass.
>Lindybeige
>Right
I can literally count all his "right" videos. If we skip those where he pokes fun from shitty fights, I will have enough fingers to do that.
And he made over 500 of those
>Unofficial Veeky Forums guide on non-sucking videos made by Lloyd:
Shield grips
Five Beat Swing Dance
Throwing knives
Franciscas (throwing axes)
A point about historical advisors in films
Hollywood Endings
Arrows
Torches: entire series (HIGHLY recommending, probably the best thing he ever made)
Tread traps
Dual wielding
Crossbows
Crossbow mechanisms
Make Your Own Gelatinous Cubes
A point about the status of swords
A point about fancy fighting stances
Pushing swords
Crossfire series (even if it's a product placement)
Fumbles (for very, very novice GMs)
Half-elves, and how they could be entertainingly different (nothing new for me, but a lot of people miss this)
Wearing armour - is it a skill?
Rope and Hollywood
Casting swords in the movies - forging a lie
Platoons - a natural unit size for a modern army
Mail Coifs - not as simple as they seem
Forests in the olden days (but take warning - it's ONLY true if you are living in Britain)
One-man tank turrets - were they a good idea?
Tank platoons
Infantry Companies - another natural size of unit
.... and that's about it. As you might notice, there is a lot of entry-tier stuff here and basic explainations. But those are literally ALL his videos that won't make you roll your eyes or want to post an angry comment
Adding to that - if a video has "rant" or "ranting" in the title, avoid it like fire. He had this very, very stupid period about 4-5 years ago, where he made a lot of political videos, ranting like a grumpy old pensioner in such polarizing way it's hard NOT to treat them as open bait, especially since he contradicted himself from one video to another.
>no one used torches
to be fair, his point was that they weren't used underground/indoors/in confined spaces, a la Hollywood or D&D, because they used bitumen, and you'd be dying of smoke inhalation in about 5 minutes. That was a good point.
Climate change deniers trigger me so hard, I have to be a little bitch and ask what his main points are, this is meant to be a relaxing night for me.
Lindybeige still a shit though.
>Climate change deniers trigger me so hard
It never cease to amaze me how people can pretend climate doesn't change. I'm 30. When I was a kid, average winter was -10 Celcius, with so much snow I had no idea where to shovel it. Now it's good if there is snow at all - last year there was snowing for 2 days, while most of the winter was slightly above 0 Celcius.
Meanwhile, my grandmother is always recollecting her childhood and teen winters, where it was normal to use the rooftop of their house as a hill, because the snow was almost to the roof. I've been in that house and it's your normal, one-store high village house.
But hey, it's all just a scam of those evil ecologists who... who want to take over the world! Of course, that's all they want!
>When I was a kid, average winter was -10 Celcius,
>personal experience
That's not how it works.
As a whole, the temperature of Earth has increased by about 1.5°C. That's not something you'd notice.
There are local differences of extreme nature, but for many parts of the temperate zone it's basically business as usual (besides weather becoming a bit more extreme, like winters actually getting colder).
Also, modern deniers don't say that the climate doesn't change. They say that the change is not effected by humans.
Man it doesn't even snow in my town anymore
>operation market garden was a success
Which video talks about this? (Betting it's really a "American Airborne at Nimejin were the real failure" rant)
>by about 1.5°C
In what period?
Because out of curiosity I've just checked the local meteoroligical station. By their record, average winter temperature rises yearly by about 0.20 (sometimes 0.1) in past 16 years and they don't have records online before 2000.
>local
Again, local is a completely different matter and won't help you any in a discussion of GLOBAL warming.
>In what period?
I think the last 40-50 years. I'm not sure exactly. But the point is, the actual global difference, is seemingly benign, if you don't understand what a huge deal such a little change is.
>It's not how it works
>Proceeds to make stupid fallacies himself
I'm sorry, I'm not too educated myself. Please correct me.
>Also, modern deniers don't say that the climate doesn't change. They say that the change is not effected by humans.
Reminds me my Geo teacher from high school. Shit ended up with calling people from the superintendenture, because the guy was finishing all his classes about climate with "And all of this is bunch of bullshit, because I don't believe in it and you shouldn't either".
Then why the fuck teaching?
I'm just pointing you should fucking start with noting the temperature-to-time relation, otherwise your claim is as biased as the user talking about his life experiences (who in turn make him sound more valid due to your fallacy).
Same applies to "local doesn't matter". Global is a sum of local, you dolt.
>Same applies to "local doesn't matter".
At least learn to read.
>Lindybeige
If the subject isn't ancient history it's 100% bullshit.
If the subject is ancient history it's 40% bullshit.
Let's check out how much arrogance overrides common sense this time.
>Dexterity has nothing to do with initiative
>How dextrous you are has nothing to do with how quickly you can spring into action or react to your surroundings
>Even though reflex saves are based on Dexterity as well
Sure thing mate
>Initiative is based on experience
Initiative DOES increase as levels go up
>Waiting for your turn is unrealistic
Alright then, propose an alternative that keeps the game managable.
>People around the world watch these videos to improve their English
At this point his stereotypically British arrogance gets so thick, I can't tell whether he's joking or actually this delusional. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt but this is the man who unironically defends the imperial system.
>They stand up again and charge me
Are you sure your DM isn't just shit? Last time I checked standing up from a prone position took a full round action.
>I'm busy waiting for your turn
Every round is six seconds. If this really tickles your autism, just think up some explanation. Maybe you need to catch your breath after casting a spell or whatever. Is this nigger seriously complaining about in game and IRL seconds not matching up 1-on-1?
>People don't wait for their turns, they see things and react to things
Guess what armor class and saving throws represent! Exactly, you reacting to the enemy's action! You're not standing still, you're defending yourself one way or another. The enemy needs to overcome your AC ie. your attempts at not getting hit! That dexterity you complain about also increases AC remember?
>B-But it's slow
>I want it to be completely freeform
Then play freeform! You're not proposing an alternative, you're throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
I haven't been this triggered since his "Napoleon is literally Hitler" twaddle.
God almighty he's so English it's obnoxious
Then I suggest watching him denying concentration camps during 2nd Boer War. Or just about watching any Brit-wank video he ever made.
That shit is strong enoigh is enough to trigger Brits about someone being so absurdly and in the same time unconsciously nationalistic.
Veeky Forums hates him as much as Veeky Forums does. There was this huge butthurt thread about his French resistance video.
>Then I suggest watching him denying concentration camps during 2nd Boer War.
What video? I feel like getting mad.
I pray he never discovers /int/.
user, were you actually expecting sense, logic or providing actual solutions from Lindybeige?
I mean he's THE Idea Guy when it comes to "game-fixes"
I like Lindy cause hes cute and his voice is nice.
Him triggering people is just a plus.
Boer Concentration Camps, from the "political" series he made 5 years ago, aka his worst and most autistic period.
>idiot viking tries to block the full swing with the exact middle of the haft
I mean, yeah, the sword doesn't need to be halfway through the motherfucker, but trying to block a two-handed swing with a weapon that heavy with the literal weakest part of your weapon is pretty much begging for death. That guy would have a broken collarbone and be permanently disabled at best, right up until someone came along to poke him in the larynx with a spear.
Hence why the whole thing is a "bad fight"
>This is stupid!
>Doesn't present a viable alternative that isn't a total nonsensical clusterfuck
>Are you sure your DM isn't just shit? Last time I checked standing up from a prone position took a full round action.
In 5e it's "an amount of movement equal to half your speed." So no longer as punitive but still not insignificant, especially given how many ways there are to reduce remaining speed to 0.
The only thing particularly bad about it by TV standards is that if goes halfway through the guy.
Everything else is bog standard /tv/shit. I honestly wonder what a show would look like where they had actual professionals fighting realistically instead of the "Bad Guy" characters all being too stupid to live. It might look boring, but if some professional fencing matches are to be believed, it could be interesting to watch.
Shame we'll never find out, because TV and Film are mediums for people who've never had an original idea in their lives, without first putting that idea through three rounds of focus group testing.
>where they had actual professionals fighting realistically
But we don't really know what fighting realistically entails.
We can mostly recreate dueling situations, but battles between larger groups are still largely an unknown.
What made me rage is how little effort he put in climate change. Its like yeaj idk what the fuck its a green house gas,but fuck it im gonna have an opinion! Cos you know IS A THEORY. Bitch if you are gonna talk about something LOOK ACTUAL DATA.
You must be really new to Lindybeige and his TTRPG videos. So far the only one being good and providing solution was Escalation, mostly because any half-decent GM figured that out on their own about 30 years ago.
>>Doesn't present a viable alternative
Yes he does, he mentions RuneQuest which has an immeasurably superior system.
Another new person to Lindybeige, I see.
Don't you know he doesn't care about actual data?
And that about 5 years ago he create - fully intentionally - entire series of politically incorrect videos as click baits, since he was running low on cash and nothing brings dough faster than internet fame achieved by triggering people.
Hackmaster or fengshui do it much better. Rq was a clusterfuck
So, today on Veeky Forums. "Don't forget that the Nazi concentration camp deathtoll was over 10 million because of gays, political dissenters, and other ethnic groups were killed alongside the Jews" is Holocaust Denial,,,
Can you stop with the FUCKING ad hominems and address his point please.
RQ is great, its initiative system is leagues ahead of D&D. As a game I prefer others but for the purposes of the video it's a good comparison.
But RQ is one of two games Lloyd ever played, so what do you expect here?
>>Initiative is based on experience
>Initiative DOES increase as levels go up
Only in the shittiest versions of the game.
Nobody gives a fuck about that aside bunch of autists that are /pol/ anyway, but lurked on Veeky Forums so long they are technically fa/tg/uys now.
First he would have to start making them, rather than creating click-bait videos
