/awg/ Alternative Wargames General

Corporate shill edition.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.

>Examples of games that qualify
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_miniature_wargames
Mighty Armies, Dragon Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals, Frostgrave, Hordes of the Things, Songs of Blades and Heroes, and anything that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread (gorkamundheim).

Question of the Now: Going into the new year, what will be your plans for your /awg/ of choice, and, what are you most looking forward to seeing released in 2017?

>tfw you get a big chunky Reaper Bones model for like £5

Odd how size doesn't seem to come into price though, the Giant Worm that everybody uses for Frostgrave is a similar size to this guy and is like half the price, and yet the Mocking Beast (treasure chest with a mouth) is like £3

Yeah, I stopped trying to figure out their pricing scheme, shit's all over.

Its probably something to do with the mouldmaking process making one model easier to make.

Or maybe they've actually done a bit of market research and priced accordingly.

>Question of the Now
All the Warpath plastics.

Oooh, yeah, that's a good answer. I'm pretty keen for the Corporation vehicles and infantry, they're looking pretty shmick. I need some generic goons for a warzone campaign I'm going to try and get going at my local store next year, has mantic hinted at a release date for the new warpath plastics yet?

They are shipping them now-ish to the KS backers, so wouldn't hold my breath.

Bugger, guess I'll look elsewhere for some generic plastic sci-fi goons.

Warlord's Terminator Resistance fighters are on sale, 10GBP for 16.

Bump from page 9, fucking hell, people.

Warzone will be my big focus. Can't wait to see new Bauhaus stuff though the first half of the year seems to be brootherhood and capitol focused. Not a lot of love for best corp.

Yeah, but Strike Skimmer!

warlordgames.com/pre-order-spec-ops-lock-load/

I am indeed looking forward to the strike skimmer!

>bauhaus
>best corp
May i introduce you to empire(mow only,fuck wolves)and it's self evidebt superiority?
(serious talk now, does anyone like capitol? They look so shitty to me I can't even imagine someone would consider them decent)

I like them desu, but the old stuff only...their models are nice, and I like that they are all built on the same aesthetics (same armor with minor differences), also, fuggen rangers man. And Mitch Hunter.

Any recs for a colonial horror style miniature game?

Anyone with experience ordering from CMON around? How long does it usually take them to process an order? Put one in about a week ago and still haven't received any shipping confirmation.

Probably too busy making yet another kickstarter.

Capitol's a great army and corporation, the only weak link is the Light Infantry, both their models and their lack of a squad support weapon. Which fucking baffles me as they've had an LMG option far longer than they haven't in all the iterations of the game. I also wish they stuck with their 2nd edition Kev White aesthetic, these Prodos designs would fit better for the air cavalry unit than anything.

Pic related, old 2nd ed. Light Infantry and some Specialists(LMG and Grenade Launchers, oh if only still.)

And the Specialists.

Anyone got the rules for Strange Aeons?

Best Warzone minis

I've got a small squad of them, thinking of maybe trying to recast a few squads of them for my upcoming Capitol army.

Well using the old minis as argument is kind of cheating, old minis are all great,my problem was with the new minis

>old minis are all great
Yeeeeeah no, The old 1st and 2nd edition Brotherhood and Dark Legion ranges were fucking awful, with a handful of exceptions(Kev White Brotherhood Troopers and Valkyries, Razides and Praetorian Stalkers, Ilian Templars and a few others).

>Any recs for a colonial horror style miniature game?

Who's colony, when and where? Since you are writing in English, I'm going to assume you mean famous colonies of the British Empire.

Donnybrook if you want things more subtle (mechanically). Good for Africa, Asia and the Americas between 1600 and 1780. With a couple of tweaks, you've got rules for rifles and it is good until you have Gatling and Maxim guns showing up.

If you just want white guys terrorized by dinosaurs and giant gorillas, Saurian Safari/Mammalian Mayhem is pretty cool.

Song of Fear & Faith (Blades & Heroes) would also be easy.

I personally love old brotherhood and dark legion too,but I will admit brotherhood's heads were hella wonky.

I just can't get over how bad most of the Brotherhood range was! I know it was the early 90s but come on, there's just no reason they should have been like that. At least the 1st edition Capitol stuff was moderately charming(Heavy Infantry, special forces).

Of the second wave of core troops, I've had the most difficult time sourcing these capitol light infantry dudes. Love the sculpts too

I am charmed by them. Love the tribes of earth ranges for this reason too

The tribes of earth were great, I loved the Templars and Cresentia ranges, Lutherans were a mixed bag though, Sons of Rasputin were pretty solid too. I really hope Prodos brings the tribes and Dark Eden back at some point, I can only imagine how cool those armies would look with their production methods.

I personally loved them, i even bought some from prince august. My favourite are old trenchers, but goddamn are brotherhood lovely.

I just liked the whacked-out concept of lutherans so much that I overlooked the bland models. sons of rasp were top tier amazing. Jaeger commando and standard bearer were/are amazing minis

Since you are talking about it, how was warzone resurrection balanced in previous versions?i have read old rules but never got to play them. I noticed they took away life dragoon's rule to augment the mortar's rof, was it busted?

Bunch of asshokes who go awakening interdimensional monsters? Yeah; fuck Imperial.

A lot of units lost support options, to be fair. Yeah it is silly that Light Infantry have no LMG, but everyone lost shit.

Bump from the grave

That's really something I'm grumpy for. Light infantry had a ton of support options - LMG, grenade launcher, comms specialist, medic...and now nothing. Sea Lions, LMG, flamer, comms, grenadier, lost it all. I understand they need to sell their new shit, but they could succeed thanks to old players who knew what Warzone was, and wanted new stuff for it.

Balance at its core was alright, it wasn't till the army rebalancing in 1.6 that things came into their own. It was then that the armies had a much better focus inline with the themes and attitudes of the respective factions(battlefield prep and better than average infantry for imperial as an example). Rapid deployment was always a wildcard that needed a lot of adjustment. It was, and still is, a fun and engaging deployment mechanic. But it was also an easy way to fuck your opponent up real good. I'd say it's better now in 2.0, now that there are a whole lot more deployment options. Not to mention clearing up the less well written rules and clearing out the barely functioning and outright ignored mechanics no one cared about. Then there's the vehicle changes, those helped play as well.

As for the Life Dragoons and their mortar? 1, I'm salty about that. 2, their "Load it up!" special action was one of the oft ignored mechanics removed. The whole squad special actions were a good idea in theory, but the implementation was naff. You had a few ok actions that were still worthless compared to just having more soldiers shoot or charge, and often the other actions were either so penalised or lackluster it wasn't even worth reading them. So they scrapped the mechanic rather than try and rebuild it, and so the L16/81mm Mortar lost its variable rate of fire. A shame and a bit of a cop out, it was a good idea but I can understand a little about why they scrapped it. Oh! And the Suppression squad special action, you could only perform it with 2 squads in the game, Bauhaus Hussars with max squad and 2 LMGs, and that was an expensive unit at the time too. And the Enhanced Machinatora from Cybertronic if you equipped at least one with their HMGs.

Bump-a-roo!

To keep this from just turning into purely warzone discussion(though I'm quite happy for that to be the case) let me ask a question. Where do you, fellow anons, go for your battle report fixes? Your favourite games to read BRs about, blogs of choice, jewtube channels? Where do you all go?

So, there is a new starter set for Antares.

From the looks of it this is Warlords last attempt to make the game popular.

35 Pound is a really good price for what you get there (i'll ignore the fact that i find the minis to look extremely boring). 25 infantry, 9 drones, battlemat (i assume its cheap pvc or cloth and not mousepad quality) and 2d terrain + a ton of dice and templates and 2 books. (For comparison, the Bolt Action starter set costs twice that price, it has some more minis included though)

What do you think? Will this help the game?

Just can't get over how generic and boring the models are to be honest.

How would you guys like to chance to play some of your more obscure wargames, ones where models aren't easy to get a hold of, or one's where the only place to discuss it seems to be on here?

We over at the Friendly Virtual Gaming Thread want to make games as accessible as possible to the Veeky Forums community, which is why we've been working on finding free tools to make gaming with other Veeky Forums users a possibility. One of those is BattleBox3d. It's a 3d Tabletop environment that lets you import custom models, maps, and terrain, and Direct Connect play.

battlebox3d.com

In other words, it's the perfect(free) tool to play almost any Wargame, with a little work. We've also gathered a couple of free tools to make it easy to pose, kit, and paint 3d models with very little experience.

Our main goal is to gather enough resources, including 3d Models, to be able to support an active playing community on Veeky Forums, to the point where we see the Game Finder thread used for more than just a Roll20 Beg Thread. Got the next 2 hours free? Make a request and get playing Frostgrave, or whatever suits your fancy.

So, what do we need from you guys? We need a game. Something that's suitable for the virtual environment, easy to get into, fun, and likely to appeal to a wide audience, while still maintaining an interesting storyline/theme. Preferably a small skirmish-level game that supports the use of more generic models, as we'll be gathering such from various 3d warehouse sites.

We want to find a game, gather enough resources to make it playable, and then use it as our flagship in the Veeky Forums virtual wargaming community, and build around that, adding virtual kits and models until we're able to support almost any wargame. We may also open an invitation to /3/ for this project, to see if there's any interest in that end as well.

So, tell us what you think, and what might be a good game.

Yeah, I feel ya. Capitol is really missing special weapon options in their units, which makes them feel a bit more bland to me.

Also I want some god damn snipers for my Bauhaus.

For the price it's an absolute steal, but Warlord really mishandled the game and I agree this may be a last gasp of air.

I'll probably grab it, though, to have the books on my shelf and give the game a whirl.

Next time they send me a 10GBP coupon i'll pick it up myself.

What do you guys think about some actions being sort of 'given' in a skirmish wargame?

Like, instead of having an agility stat to see who can climb where, have everyone climb on a 4+ roll on a D6 (just as an example, I don't really like D6 for skirmish games), and then have some dudes have a rule that makes them climb automatically.

Or even, have everyone climb automatically at half speed, and then some guys can climb at normal speed or even double speed or something.

Therefore each and every roll is a roll against the oponent and not against the enviroment, making the game have much more consistent mechanics and just one way of rolling the dice instead of multiple ones.

I am not sure I understand fully your post, but you want a poster boy game right? Something popular enough to make a playerbase on? I am afraid that is not something you do with /awg/s,community for these games is by definition little. In my experience the biggest alternative game around is warzon(I might be forgetting something bigger),but even then I wouldn't hope for it to attract enough people. I would personally go for warmahordes or infinity(unless they already have something(didn't really ever look into it)). I also am unsure what generic would be like in a Sci fi setting, they differ so much from each other it's hard to pinpoint some basics over than armoired dudes, generic aliens, oddly enough often represented priest dudes and robots(of course fantasy doesn't have the same problem). I am sorry for this very unhelpful post I threw in everything I thought could maybe be helpful. Good luck with your project.

This.

Or since you mentioned it: Frostgrave (or Mordheim).

user is not selling his idea properly
The selling point should be the chance of playing games that you never had the chance before because you could not find another player near you

For that the plattform needs to be somewhat popular because otherwise you won't find people for your game there as well.

I think that's what he's trying to do. Popularize the platform here and get everyone playing.

He might have better luck with the Historical Wargames General.

I did understand him, thats why i seconded the post about Warzone and recommended Frostgrave. These games are at least somewhat popular to lure people in, and if people are there you can build upon that.

But some historical games might work as well.

Sorry for not quoting, but I am getting some problems, since we are calling historical games I think chain of command would be a great fit, simple rules, fun, loved but not quite enough to be big. Also any other too fat lardies game would be nice and disposable heroes comes to mind as well. Saga for medieval stuff could be nice.

That looks pretty cool actually. And it has the concord and another good-looking faction in it instead of the moronic mechbots which turned the starter set into whoever manages to fail the armor save of the mechs.

>moronic
>Ghar
Go fuck yourself.

I do agree, though, its a better match up than the other one.

Bumping for opinions

Sounds good.
Maybe add some a special rule to heavy and bulky equipment like large shields or heavy armor to prevent the wearer from climbing around like crazy.

Thread bump!

>/awg/ of choice
Guild Ball easily, especially with the Season 3 stuff and cheaper models. That said I would like to see The Other Side come into existence soon.

>The Other Side
10 days til the KS.

>Also I want some god damn snipers for my Bauhaus.
There's a sniper character in Bauhaus now. Here's hoping for a unit of them down the line.

Cool tank that actually gonna become a mini?

So what's The Other Side?

It's a 32mm weird WW1-steampunk deal that shares a setting with Malifaux. They haven't put out too much about it yet. It is objective focused, uses playing cards instead of dice, uses seperate fireteams that are on movement trays, has mechanics that involve out of combat supply lines which can be used to get more stuff, and is more of a mass combat game as opposed to Malifaux which is a pretty small skirmish game. There are supposedly going to be four factions to start, which like the original four Malifaux factions are based on a suite of cards.

Wyrd's doing a larger scale game. Its what's happening on Earth during Malifaux. So far, what we know is that it'll use fate decks too, the morale system is models get 2 stat profiles, the normal one and an inspired one, Malifaux sea monsters are migrating through underwater portals and trying to take over, and Africa has the most advanced civilization in their timeline.

It has, twice in fact!

First was back in the 90s by Target Games, the people who made Mutant Chronicles and Warzone, it was an absolute beast of a model.

1/2

>has mechanics that involve out of combat supply lines which can be used to get more stuff
That sounds like a pretty cool premise, but what grabs my attention is this quoted line, very interesting. A friend of mine is developing a tank battle game with a real time resource and construction element(there's a resource harvester in the middle of the table, you can pull supplies from it to build new tanks, air support, drone infantry to throw into the fight). So this is pretty cool to see someone else doing a similar sounding thing.

Then there's the Prodos version, a much smaller rendition and is more of a different production model in the same family of tank, I have one of these undercoated and staring at me on my painting table.

Taken from the website
>Battles are won and lost by more than individual troops. There are lines of supply, hovering zeppelins, and magical rituals that might have a significant impact upon the outcome of a battle. These advantages are represented by Stratagems.
>Stratagems are used by shrewd Commanders as the battle unfolds around them, allowing them to call in reinforcements, unleash experimental weapons, or exploit the current battlefield conditions to gain an edge over their foes.
>All of these gambits require your Commander’s attention to unleash,
however, and knowing when to take
advantage of a Stratagem will be
something that separates the greatest
generals of the era from those that are
forgotten by history.

Will have to wait for the Kickstarter's blurb to hear more details. I hope it ends up decent myself.

Me too, seeing Wyrd branch out into a mass battle game is really quite intriguing.

Cool minis. Hope the game is successful and maybe I'll get into it.

They're definitely going for scale with it. Just afraid of the cost, because it is Wyrd.

Why is it that relatively unexpensive games with gorgeous models and (from what I am hearing) rules that arent half bad get completely ignored? Like wrath of kings or avatars of war.

Unless you're bashing your club, playgroup, or friends over the head with it people just wont try something out of their gaming comfort zone. I think that's why so many people stick with a game like 40k and then in the next breath bitch about how shit of an actual game it is.

Then you've got to contend with the fact that starting a scene for a new game is an awful lot of work, people may buy into it but if they don't see if rapidly take off it dies. Shit's a god damn nightmare.

MERCS

Got into Dark Age thanks to the -50% sale from CMON, now I'm anxiously waiting for it to arrive (and praying that customs don't stop it) and painting LotR figures in the meantime, trying to get my painting skills to a not-shit level so I can make these incoming miniatures justice.

Very much looking forward to the two player starting set for Dark Age that's supposedly been "right around the corner" for a few months now.

Same here, if they have the stock, how come it's taking them over a week to ship it?

I would like to see BtGoA do well, more games is always a sign of a healthy industry, but as others have said, the miniatures just look too bland, too "generic Halo-style", which is one that I never liked.

I don't see that much of a difference, really. In one system you'll have to roll a value based on a chart depending on your attribute, in the other the roll value is "incorporated" in that particular miniature's profile and then you add modifiers.

I don't see how consistency matters in this case, it's not like this is software and keeping things consistent will make it smoother. I like the possibility of my guys fucking up in the worst moment by grabbing onto the wrong rock. Mordheim

>the miniatures just look too bland, too "generic Halo-style",

This. From that pic its hard to tell the difference between the red and the green armored dudes. The green drones are a little bit bigger, but thats it apparently.

jesus christ italy is fucked

Immensely so.

It's a shame as I like the game. But it's telling that within a week or so of Konflict '47 someone had kindly made the rules available to poor people and there still isn't a copy of BtGoA in the wild. I've got the rulebook and it's a really nice game just want a version for my phone/iPad and I'm not paying another £20 for it

Hey guys, what are some non-traditional skirmish games you have to recommend?

I've played SoBH, Infinity, Mordheim, Blood Bowl, Malifaux, Dark Age, and I'm probably forgetting a few.

Eden is nice. Works surprisingly well for a game with so few models.

Relic Knights is pretty ok, going through an edition change(at least they were when I last checked) at the moment, should be an improvement if the people on the forums can stop praising every decission and actually play the beta and give proper feedback.

By non-traditional do you simply mean 'not very well-known' or are you looking for something that is mechanically unusual?

Freebooters Fate.

Wyrd isn't especially expensive though, their plastics per mini are generally cheaper than most metal lines, especially considering the amount of pieces they come in.

I'll check them out then. I'd appreciate ones with easy-to-get rules, since I don't have any spare money, I'm from bongo land.

A bit of both, but I'd be more interested in playing something mechanically unusual

Freebooters quickstart rules are free, but in german.

Maybe one day i can get myself to translate them for /awg/

MERCS, Freebooters Fate, World of Twilight, Cutlass just to name a few.

This Is Not A Test is a surprisingly good game, got to test it out last week for the first time.

Getting good models for it is not as easy as some other games tho, cos post-apoc is not as popular amongst mini-companies.

TnT can be pretty cool but I had to look at their FAQ (and even ask a fair amount of questions) for a lot more than I'd like.

The activation system is IMO, kind of lame (too random while being too punishing).
We changed it to be basically like Warzone Resurrection 2.0s, which feels much better:
You roll initiative every round to see who goes first. The winner activates one unit (with a Quality Test that dictates AP as normal), but then whether they pass or fail, play will pass to the other player after that unit has activated. The first unit each player activates each turn also cannot be the last one they activated the previous turn (unless that's your only unit) to prevent any back-to-back activations of a single model.

small question: what are the biggest wargame companies around other than gee dub?

Warlord Games
Mantic
Gripping Beast
Perry Miniatures
Wyrd
Reaper
Corpus Belli

And CMON, perhaps?

> Not listing Privateer Press.

Aren't PP the second largest right behind GW when it comes to non-Historical wargames?

In America maybe. No idea how big they really are, nobody in my area plays the games and i have zero interest in them, so it might be that you are right.

That list was just out of my head in 5 seconds. I also forgot Battlefront (Flames of War).

*Corvus Belli

thanks.

>recommending a game with literally no support
you should feel bad

Just checked Warlord's site, it's a paper battlemat.
