We had a setting that involved the "ancient evil" awakening. The heroes set off to stop the villain waking it, causing all sorts of problems along the way, costing loads of lives trying to stop him, killing loads of people that worked for him. But they failed to actually stop him.
Then the ancient evil was woken by the villain, and it turned out it didn't give a shit. It immediately left the planet and didn't come back. The villain was stuck knowing everything he'd tried was for nothing, and the heroes realised that their actions had caused more of a problem than the supposed evil did.
Made me realise that every single one of those stories where the villain needs to get stopped, it's just people on the other side of the coin trying to maintain the status quo. The hero/villain dichotomy was just perspective.

Given that the whole country's interior functions as a giant 'fuck you keep out' sign to anyone sane and the Abo's are ancient guardians of ancestral leylines and shit, it is VERY possible that Austrailia IS the prison for some sort of fucking cosmic horror and thats why the life is so hostile and mutated the further into the interior you go.
