I play pure gygaxian 2nd edition ad&d, based in the world of greyhawk, with no 3rd edition+ lame bs added in.
The current iteration of D&D is atrocious, as is the d20 system.

That's just my opinion, and it's coming from an ancient old fart by 4chans standards. I'm actually glad that D&D is still being played, and it's good that actual people get together face to face to socialize.

>A hive city of epic proportions with a society so rigidly stratified that different levels are on vastly different tech levels - spears at the bottom, Clarkian "magic" tech at the top.

Long ago, the four First Kingdoms ruled over Slidgründe in a vain arms race and plotted to dominate everything. The stalemate snapped.

After a huge war (I mean it would make WWII look like a schoolyard fight, nukes being dropped every 10 seconds on cities with magical anti-nuke manashields the size of Rhode Island), years of chaos followed, as the war beasts got loose and millions fled underground. Warlords swept over the ruins using broken First Kingdom devices.

Now everything's mostly alright. In the land of Origin, a religion based on combined human potential is leading them to gradually increase industrial capacity without fossil fuels (the First Kingdoms used them all up), and absorb neighbors into their nation. In Lyr, the mostly agricultural citizens live under democracy and enjoy a wealth of freedoms.

But when the Earthlings come, bringing technology reminiscent of their past follies and companies like Unicorn Hunt hell-bent on learning the secrets of the planet, whether for curiosity or profit, adventurers and leaders across the world must choose whether to embrace or turn away from contact, while the upheaval triggers events good and disastrous across the world.
