So, Orcs live in the mountains. Let me clarify that... Orcs live in mountainous regions, not inside of mountains. They do a little bit of farming, where there is a bit of flat land. Raise some goats and do a little bit of shallow mining where there are opportunities. They trade with other groups of orcs in bordering regions and sometimes with other races if there are no conflicts with them at the time.
The most common grouping of orcs is a clan, a collection of 3 to 4 extended family groups spread over miles of land with some shared communal facilities centrally located. Orcs don't naturally group up in larger numbers or more dense arrangements. They are not 'non-violent' at all but usually lack the drive to group up in any kind of "army" more potent than a half-dozen brothers bothering caravans that use remote passes or wandering down to a human settlement. They might do some heavy (for a humy) work for a farmer in exchange for crops but they might also just walk up and steal an armload of cabbages or a pig.
There are tensions but usually not wars.
Every dozen generations or so a clan leader will rise to a position of power and start inspiring large numbers of the younger orcs. Some claim it is magic, some claim it's just something built into orcs, deep down into the bones. This clan leader, soon a great war leader, gathers up the biggest force he can and attacks whatever got into his head as the enemy. This is way too many orcs for relatively sparse lands to support so these driven, inspired orcs are also hungry and downright mean by the time they become a notable threat. They strip the land and larders in passing but stories about eating people or their own dead is just talk, nothing more.
Eventually the army crashes into something it can't beat and bounces off. The great war leader ends up getting killed (sometimes by a suspicious knife-wound in the back) and the survivors melt away into the world.
Few return to their mountain homes.
