I decided to make my setting strongly matriarchal because I wanted to write about women in the military and I figured a culture that flipped it was more realistic than a culture with no gender roles at all. Mostly I ignore it since by the time the story is set the masculist movements have taken away a lot of the prejudice, but I do throw in a male character complaining about the glass ceiling keeping him from advancing past Commodore, and a backwards country only recently giving men the right to vote.
