I like 3.5, even Pathfinder is kinda tolerable to me.
It's the system I grew up with.
5e is good too but I can't over the things I don't like about it.
So now I am stuck in the middle, not sure what system to commit to.
I play both right now.
I remember while we were setting up for a Pathfinder game one of my friends said he didn't understand why anyone would want to play something besides Pathfinder.

If the GM wants to run a particular system you don't like the appropriate thing to do would be to bring up your grievances and if that fails either fuck off and don't join the game or join the game and shut your mouth about the system being used.

Besides you are acting as though pathfinder is objectively better than 5e which is far from true. A better example might be spices or the example I used tag vs hide and go seek.

There’s so many people like this who just haven’t actually played 5e and don’t see that the relative lack of customisation compared to 3.pf is a good thing. The game actually gets played rather than just bogged down in endless paperwork.

So i used to be that guy. I own the large majority of 3/.5 books for D&D, nothing for pf though. I have been playing/running the system since drop. when 5e dropped, i bought the core set and was disappointed to say the least. Better than 4, certainly, but still not as good as 3. so, i rallied against it until they dropped more books and a buddy of mine ran the tyrrany of dragons module. I decided to play and actually enjoyed it.
I still prefer 3e, but no longer rally against 5e and it has made my friends happier that they can run something and let me take the backseat for once.

I wish I could understand what it is about 3.pf that makes them this way. It seems like it's unique to those two games, too. I've never met fans of any other game, not even FATAL or GURPS, who are quite this obnoxious and strident about the superiority of their game. 3.PF causes brain damage if you play it for too long because it forces your mind to go into the same mindset as someone trying to build a standard deck while also tricking you into thinking that two lines of flavor text constitutes as fluff.

I don't go out of my way to abide behavior that negatively affects me user. I also communicate with my friends like a fucking adult. If I know dave can't play in a serious character to save his life, I will not invite dave to a seriously toned game I am running. If dave needs to know I will inform him that I don't think he'd be a good fit, maybe next time. Yeah. I have a group of friends who I stopped playing with because of the crazy amount of bullshit they’ve laid on top of pathfinder in order for it to work in way they find fun. They’re now playing with Akashic, Spheres of Power and Spheres of Might and a load of other house rules. I’ve seen them and said “You could just play 5e” and they refuse because of their brain damage.

If I were you I'd stick with 5e because of only managing to learn it thus far, no time for 3.5. Anyway, try looking for people on Roll 20 if you can't find a suitable replacement for the current players offline.

I.e. you can play 3.5 and spend your skill points all over the the place on whatever skills you want to have, a little here, a little there... or you can actually have a good chance at succeeding at relevant skill checks by maxing out your ranks in however many skills you can.

They can' t get their mind around "but I have 5 feats by that level in 3.5, and 5th only gives me 1" being like having 5 $1 bills vs. a single $10 - since those 5 feats have to be spent on bullshit prerequisites and then on up a chain just to do anything even kind of close to as useful as a 5th edition feat does.

Totally stuck on fewer number of choices, blind to it being the impact of any choices that is more important.

5E feats aren't a real choice and there are several 3.5E feats with as much, if not more, impact than 5E's feats.
