Warhammer 40,000 General /40kg/

So I am new and recently got First Strike and Know No Fear sets, data cards for both Astartes and the Deathguards. I picked up the core rule book and am looking forward to playing and eventually going to local shop to play. However, I'm wondering if the units that are included in those 2 sets are enough to meet the point minimum in play at LGS? It's just me and a friend who have only played twice or so but I want to sink money into the game. Do I need to buy some start collecting boxes or do I have enough units for a 2k or 4k point army? Sorry for long and convoluted question.

You can find the codexes in the OPs mega link, those sets should equal around 700~points. You should stop by your shop and see if they host any noob friendly event days

Codexes are required to learn everything about your army. Datacards are just convenient for playing.
Actually bigger stuff often is easier to paint than smaller, in my opinion it's better to finish with all you have before buying more.
What I can recommend for DG are a Demon Prince of Nurgle, Helbrutes, more Bloatdrones, more Plague Marines for bringing special weapons and also their variants of Terminators.
Plagueburst Crawlers are also good if paired with a Lord for rerolls.

I think people are overthinking it honestly. More people would be turned off by retconing them than they would be by putting the nail in belakor's super speshul coffin.
What will make GW more money always supersedes fluff. Undivided are only not part of the current lore because undivided doesn't have a product line. Once undivided get's models, such as two highly profitable centre piece primarchs, then they'll cram it back in without a second thought.

I feel like the swords from black ark Corsairs would make better scimitars than that one

I really love the Aesthetic of Deathguard, much how Skaven appeal to me. So they would be primary, then either Orks or UM since UM are so widely available.
I've tried watching battle reports, I actually am right now, but every DG video is just Mortarion charging into the opponents army and dumpstering them whilst they have deamon lords shitting on the heavy guns. Doesn't seem very balanced since most of the videos I watch, the opponent's army aren't codex armies I think. (not entirely sure how it all works.

I hope, I've semi-decided to use my tax return this year to buy an Ordinatus. Not that I'll ever use it much but it'd be nice for it to have 40k rules again so I can bring it out for occasional shits and giggles games.

In fact, doing this lets you actually bring a platoon commander. Something you actually need.

They can split fire, though that doesn't mean you should just throw random weapons together.

You can split fire yes but picking literally every weapon avaiable and sprinkling them on anything that can carry them is not a wise choice. Get specialised weapons instead and use them for the role they are good at, take lascannons and mortars for anti tank and anti infantry respectively for example and equip your russes with plasma and front bolter to deal with heavy infantry.

That's kind of a point of the setting though. A modern machinegun is nice and all, but wont help you against a 7 foot mushroom man trying to stab you with his giant axe. But hey, the guy who's a walking tank is able to stop his hand and punch his head off.
