how interested would you anons be in an old republic, cold war era F&D/AoR campaign?
the jedi order is rebuilding on tython after getting thoroughly shit on over 30 years, and to make matters worse most of the republic holds a grudge against them for ultimately failing. disillusioned jedi and republic troops alike are all over, with a good mix of freelance good to openly contemptuous dark jedi/republic troops, the former pursuing their own agendas and the latter going solo for the highest bidder.
the sith and their empire is at arguably their most powerful state ever, owning a little more than half of the known galaxy, with their occupations ranging from brutal subjugation to passively ill-willed
the mandalorians are still in recovery mode from being BTFO at the hydian way but maintain their status as very well paid allies of the empire. the faction under papa cadera broke off to work with the republic so theres room for star wars most famous mercenaries to play both sides.
hutt space and in general the lowlife of the galaxy are having the time of their lives capitalising on the war weary rebuilding galaxy and the corresponding lack of policing as well as the rich amount of high quality salvage, such as on hoth or taris. coruscant's resettlement zones are of particular interest, with basically every criminal organization active during this time having a hand in something or another at the heart of the republic. criminal interests have grown to such scale that some openly contest the empire and republic in their own territory, with mixed success. 1/

I thought malachor was when the Mandos got BTFO

in spite of everything, both the empire and republic still oppose eachother across the galaxy, from open rebellion such as on balmorra to clandestine activities like weapons development and espionage virtually everywhere. theres no shortage of work for mercenaries, including both mandalore's faction and cadera's faction as both sides secretly attempt to eliminate rogue agents and dangerous foes. the galaxy returning to open war seems to be an virtual inevitability and the empire and republic as well as various criminal and neutral elements are doing their best to prepare.
in general, theres a ton of stories to explore here. what i like in particular is the chance for much larger and impactful stories to be explored - whereas in the OT you risk looking like weird out of place mary sues, you could very easily assist in planetary occupations, whether than means expelling a force or capturing it for one, without drastically changing an established narrative. on top of that, jedi and sith can openly walk around in more substantial numbers with more substantial experience than OT without anyone batting an eye. lets be honest, a squad of murderhobos or edgy lightning nerds is pretty fucking cool no matter how you slice it. even if you dont roll as one of them, theyre around to interact with and/or kill/capture, which adds a nice dynamic to bounty hunter characters.
on top of that, theres a lot of history to explore as well. the sith race is well and alive, with their dark side alchemy and extensive dark side history. the rakatan empire is a little more fresh and the star forge is still relatively recent in the collective galactic memory. voss, korriban or tython's connection to force history is ripe for narrative exploration, and with two superpowers competing to discover the next big thing first you have a very straightforward catalyst to drive relic recovery and the like.
all in all i think it could be a cool campaign to play thru. what does swg think?
Liam Reed
malachor was 300 years before, during revan/malek's campaign at the end of the mandalorian wars
My current campaign is heavily based around starfighter combat, so I've been using a lot of old WWI/WWII air combat movies. I've especially drawn on Twelve O'Clock High (inspiration for the NPC squadron leader), 633 Squadron/The Dam Busters (obvious picks for trench run-esque scenarios), and The Blue Max (inspiration for one PC's TIE ace nemesis).
I also borrowed the premise of The Guns of Navarone for one session, with half the party climbing the mountain to disable anti-air guns while the other half flew Y-Wings to take down the main cannons.
Caleb Davis
I genuinely hope that Disney runs with hyperspace missiles, so that there's an interesting element of MAD/Balance of Terror between the NR and FO. That would be an original and unique direction, which is why they will inevitably avoid it.
Isaac Murphy
>Ywings Yawn
Grayson Bailey
>What movies (besides the obvious ones) do you use as inspiration for campaigns? I’ve used Seven Samurai, Battlestar Galactica and a bunch of WW2 plot-to-kill-X movies for inspiration.
Robert Rogers
Oh, my mistake. The venerable Y-Wing, veteran of the Clone Wars and workhorse of the Rebellion, is clearly inferior to Kylo's quarter-life crisis-mobile that never got in an actual dogfight because he scored a cheap shot on the enemy hanger.
Cameron Walker
>Dunkirk When you really think of it, The Last Jedi was basically Star Wars Dunkirk.

Yeah, but it didn't have the practical effects that made dunkirk worth not sleeping through.

In all fairness, the X-Wing has a ridiculous armament. It's the universe equivalent of having four 20mm cannons. Proofs is that they could punch through the Death Star defense turrets. A .50 cal equivalent won't do that.
For a gun fighter, that's a great deal of gun.

You know how in Halo there's an entire protocol regarding 'don't jump towards Earth if there's covenant around'? That, basically, combined with everyone jumping in a seperate direction. If you're doing hit and run, you need to budget fuel for chaining into a second jump while praying you weren't the poor bastard they pick to follow.
Easton Garcia
From his head wraps, they’re probably fake and cover his real ears
James Anderson
Well, they could track through hyperspace with physical beacons already, they've been doing that since ANH (and Rebels shows them doing it with missile based trackers, and Obi-Wan was throwing tracking devices around back in the Clone Wars). So the idea of following your enemy through hyperspace is not completely alien.
Without more detail on what this "Hyperspace Tracking" is, we can't be sure. Seems like it needs a lot of power through and a dedicated command ship to scan. It'll make hit and runs and evacuating harder, but not impossible depending on what the "rules" actually are. Since the Raddus was the ship being tracked and was kind of important due to limited reserves, it's hard to know how useful it is.
Alexander Wilson
>That moment when the rebel release for legion is probably gonna be snow dudes and Leia.
Fucking gay. In other news when the fuck are we going to fucking get the ships from the new trilogy in armada. For fuck sake give a resurgent class already.
Elijah Hill
logistically it would cut down the need for specialized craft like interdictors for the fleet. Capital ships would probably be more leery of getting into an engagement, as they can no longer withdraw easily. But I don't see it being that much of game changer, because vessels with a faster hyperdrive/navicomputer can still outpace you, jumping again before you arrive, or lead you along into an ambush where the enemy sets the terms rather than your fleet.
Jacob Rivera

If it were me, considering the size of the hyperspace tracker and what it looks like, I'd assume that what "hyperspace tracking" actually is is simulating hyperspace via a massive computational array and projecting it via hyperspace. Then you compare the simulation to the actual readings you get from hyperspace. Where there are discrepancies in comparing the simulation and the hyperspace readings, that is the path of the ships you want to track. That's why only one ship has the tracker active at any one time; otherwise, the simulations might not be synchronized. It would also allow the fleet to make simultaneous movements through hyperspace itself instead of making straight-line jumps, since you can now predict the motion of hyperspace itself.
Thomas Smith
True. But reverse traps are where they really shine
Brandon Rivera
Pick your gay poison, swg
Charles Thompson
I see the C-130 argument in that it's a cargo vessel with a reputation for being highly accepting of modifications, but specifying the Millennium Falcon as an AC-130 receives a "no" on the grounds that the Falcon is a one-off and the AC-130 is a formal specification.
There's no 1:1 comparison between real aircraft and Star Wars. The closest you'd get is saying a YT-1000 fills a similar role as the DC-3. Revolutionized its industry, and remains in use everywhere, with plenty of customization and gunship options being available.
Joseph Morales

Nicholas Turner
Are there even atmospheric fighters anymore in Star Wars?
Aaron Kelly
Yeah, most fighters have static gear it looks like, no wheels.
TIE fighters don't even have landing gear, they have to land on the wing edge, and at points in the EU they said they couldn't even do that, they have to rack instead (though it makes sense they can actually land, it'd be weird for ground based TIEs otherwise)
Benjamin Ramirez
Yes. The speeders on Hoth.
Brandon Bailey
Yes, several of the Adumari designs were endoatmospheric only, and shit like Cloud Cars, the T-47 speeder, etc are also only capable of sub-orbital flight. They're usually only assigned to like specialized duties or are on planets explicitly because of their lower cost and tech requirements.
