Makeup in your world

What is your world's view on makeup and other cosmetics? Is it used, or discouraged, or perhaps even banned? Are they only for women, or only for men, or both? Is makeup seen perhaps as hiding your true self?

Jesus, a setting wide opinion on cosmetics? That's hard to fathom.

One region in my setting with a strong stance on cosmetics is a small island in the Thalassian Empire, a sea-based power with strong a Phoenician flavor. This one subtropical island, whose name eludes me at the moment and is buried in some footnote somewhere, is the sole exporter of purple dye in the world - they harvest it from giant sea snails that show up once every six months to mate in the shallow waters of the region on the equinox. The dye is harvested as a byproduct of their eggs's skins, which are collected and guarded to ensure that they hatch, thus increasing the population of the sluds dramatically.

After a certain point, the availability of purple dye from these things' eggs was actually reducing the price of the product to a point that the merchant middle classes of certain areas were able to buy the occasional purple thing. This was utterly unacceptable by the standards of the nobility, so they started using a crap ton of their still-fairly-rare purple dye in makeup, hair dye & other disposable cosmetics to keep the export prices high enough that only the exorbitantly rich could pay for it, and thereby keeping their status symbol as a status symbol at the cost of small profit margins. It's an entire ruling class of purple-haired, capitalist nobles, which I find mildly amusing.

Another area with a bunch of cosmetic focus is a particular orc clan (Tolkein-esque orcs with cunning and industry, not D&D-esque orcs with retard strength) with a very extensive knowledge of alchemy and poisons. They're seminomadic, always on the move to harvest more ingredients from different areas of the continent they live in, but everyone on their circuit has known for ages that attacking them is a terrible idea.

Anyway, the Daggermark Clan guard their techniques and secrets carefully, but sell their product to anyone willing to pay for it. The kingdoms aling their constant loop are trapped between a rock and a hard place - the toxins peddled by the Daggermarks are a constant threat in court and on the battlefield, but all attempts to restrict the Daggermark Clan's travels or trade result in generous donations to the restrictor's greatest enemy, and to the most rebellious elements in their own nation. It's generally accepted that the price of stopping the Orcs isn't worth paying, but someone gets the mistaken idea that they're in control about once or twice a century.

The Daggermarks feed small doses of raw poison ingredients to their young, in order to build up a gradual immunity to the toxins they brew. A Daggermark Orc isn't considered an adult until they've gotten made with the clan's three most recognizable poisons. The first poison is smeared on the entire face and head, causing their hair to fall out and stop growing, the second poison is smeared on their lips and gargled, blackening their tongue and lips, and the third is tattooed along their brows in a chain pattern, starting with a single dark red link in the middle of their head and spreading to the left and right until the recipient passes out from pain, usually after five or seven links. Their current Chieftain, Gromulsk, has a full mane of hair and a chain tattoo stretching across his face, down his neck and below his clothing.

A Daggermark Orc isn't considered an adult until they've gotten [a few cosmetic alterations] made with the clan's three most recognizable poisons.

Man, I'm too tired to be posting right now. -10 to all literacy checks.

The reason the difference looks so extreme is because she's taken all the fucking hair off her face god damn. Right wouldn't look so bad if it weren't for that fact, and she maybe went outside once in a while. Left just looks atrocious, would definitely avoid at a club, because who the fuck knows what's hiding under all that shit.

On topic: The higher you go in the city, the more over the top it gets. People wear it on all levels to ape nobility, but it's very expensive and cheap knock-offs leave pretty horrible facial damage in later years.

Most of the Elves frown on the use of makeup among their own, considering them to be a bald-faced admittance to physical inferiority, but many of the Drow warriors cover any exposed parts of their faces with scentless, grey and black paints while beyond the walls their dwellings, in order to better blend into their subterranean environment.

>isn't considered an adult until ...
>... causing their hair to fall out and stop growing ...
>... current Chieftain ... has a full mane of hair
Not trying to be an ass because this is pretty cool, but I'm stuck on the apparent contradiction. Is the Chieftain just such a badass that his hair grew back despite the poison ritual?

Or such a badass he never lost his hair to begin with

>that picture
And this is why you take the broad swimming on the first date.

It's just makeup, and save for some specific cultures or communities holds no deeper meaning to it whatsoever. Sounds boring but it's just not really something that matters a lot in the setting. Some people use it to look pretty, others don't. Tribal communities use facepaints etc. that hold ritualistic meaning to them. Necromancers sometimes paint themselves to look like skellingtons.
None of the players have shown interest in it so it's not really a hugely explored aspect basically.

Makeup has typically always been associated with some kind of prestige or part of the tribal aesthetic.

>What is your world's view on makeup and other cosmetics?
A poor woman's substitute for surgery and magic she can't afford if she uses it beyond lipstick and eyeshadow/liner. Forms of body paint aren't uncommon in some cultures though.

As said it's mainly the shaved off eyebrow for me. I think right is honestly kind of cute as far as zero makeup goes.

>What is your world's view on makeup and other cosmetics?
In my medieval setting most humans can only dream of acquiring such luxuries and they are greatly sought after as a sign of wealth and status. Among a few races though such items are seen as, at best, distasteful due to it being a sign that someone is denying their true self/attempting to deceive others.

In my space setting it is viewed as just another part of some peoples life.

Not sure about my 1930s setting...

Interesting thread OP.

>mfw the realization that women begin to wear basically masks out in public in their teens, that may hide fucking alien looking motherfuckers like the one in OP, has made me super paranoid about chicks with tons of makeup.

Girls who are pretty without ton of industrial fucking waste on their faces are the best.

She wouldn't look so weird if she didn't shave her eyebrows and stopped caking her her face with chemicals and let it get a bit of sun for a couple weeks.

Yeah.

Why do women even shave their fucking eyebrows???

Take advantage of the Schrodinger's Uggo effect: As long as you never see her without her makeup on, it's equally plausible to believe that she really is a 10/10 instead of the Lovecraftian fishman horror you suspect is being concealed.

The hookup culture is your friend!

Hookup culture is fucking disgusting and I want no part in it.
The only reason to concern oneself with females is to find a suitable woman to bear your own children and no woman partaking in the hedonistic hookup culture fit that bill.

Wealthier human women wear it the way real women do, in the style of regency or Victorian England perhaps. Poors probably don't bother and can't afford it. Women who are considered adults put their hair up, the richer the more elaborate. Younger women rock a low ponytail usually.

The demony race uses some noticeable makeup to accentuate their beauty, mostly women but plenty of men also wear eye liner etc.

The angely race sometimes uses very subtle natural makeup, as vanity is a sin. Many women refuse to touch it for religious reasons, but a lot of women do it anyway while hiding it. Men don't bother really. Married women are allowed to wear their hair up, but unmarried women must keep it down. Simple braids and unbound hair are preferred for modesty, anything too elaborate or flashy is considered attention seeking behavior and is frowned upon by mothers and governesses. Of course young ladies are always looking to push the limits of what they can get away with in the beauty department while still being humble.

Wood elves use woad for ceremonies and hunting, some use henna for beauty.

Dark elves sometimes paint their skin with glowing dyes.

Other races don't use it really. Elves in human society might adapt to their style. Generally they do whatever they want.

But senpai she doesn't even look weird. 90% of women look regular or ugly, just like men. That's not some mindbending fact, you just have an unrealistic expectation of what your girl is gonna look like with makeup off.

The lack of eyelashes is also fucking horrifying IMO, but yeah the eyebrowlessness is definitely the most standout feature.

>No eyebrows
>No eyelashes
>Skin that has never seen the sun directly
>Blotchy from all the goddamn chemicals heaped on on a daily basis
>Doesn't look weird
user what the fuck are your standards of weirdness? Would it take her being a shoggoth to put you off?

>chicks with tons of makeup

A lot of those are actually men

>thread about combat gynoid fills up with incels REEEEEEEing about women
>someone posts that picture
>user is compelled to make a new thread just to make sure more people see it
>new thread is full of incels REEEEEEEing about women

I miss having quest threads on this board.

Skin's fixable and I like big eyes and pale skin anyway. She has big eyes and a nice fat lower lip even without makeup.

I actually find her makeup more offputting desu because it's so exaggerated. A girl isn't always going to be in makeup with you, unless she's French.

As diverse as real life, and also in game, the universe (The DM, Me) also doesn't give a flying fuck about it.

Whiteknighting thots will do no good for you here.

I miss when /pol/ had been deleted.

Humans use it about as much as you'd expect, with the wealthy being caked in it and the poor mostly having more practical applications like black around the eyes as sun protection.
pOrcs use quite a bit of it to protect their sensitive skin and as cosmetics.
Elves use very little if any at all, preferring subtle styles like Koreans do today.
Trolls don't use any, they're nearly blind.
Goblins tend to be humaniboos so their use of cosmetics is similar, though the poorer ones tend to look extra trashy.
Ogres may use it for tribal markings, war paint, or as an actual cosmetic. There's not a lot of consistency with their race.
Finally male fey sometimes use makeup to stand out from the crowd during mating season if their bioluminescence isn't enough.

Interesting fact time; according to a study done by OkCupid, women on the platform rate 80% of men below average in looks, while men rate women 50/50 (and remember, these are online dating profile pics, so they're wearing tonnes of makeup and have a bit of doctoring). So obviously some combination of makeup and the media has completely fucking skewed everyone's perceptions of what the opposite sex should look like.
OP would look nice without makeup if she clearly wasn't so overreliant on makeup. Women often say wearing makeup makes them feel confident or sexy, but this creates a self-destructive loop where the more makeup one wears, the worse acne and skin tone gets, and the more extreme the makeup needs to be.

Back on topic. Heavily religious world for the most part, very anti-technology, amish in ideals, so there's very little makeup in the world outside of the "barbarians" who live in the desert, who cake themselves in chalk-based powders to reflect the sun's heat, and have developed that into their tribes' cultures, with different tribes having different patterns and conventions of that full-body makeup.

So they can paint on better looking ones like in the OP pic.

>A girl isn't always going to be in makeup with you, unless she's French.
That's why I found a girlfriend who doesn't wear makeup except for very fancy events, and even then it's only a bit of eyeliner. The reason I don't like makeup is firstly because it looks awful and fake a la the left side of that picture, and secondly because the right side of the picture - no eyebrows, no eyelashes, bad skin, etc, could be hiding underneath that. Although I agree she could be very attractive if she put some effort into her actual face (and didn't remove her fucking hair. I mean, jesus christ how horrifying) rather than just covering it up with makeup.

Why can't they be happy with what they have naturally?

anyone that good at makeup is using waterproof cosmetics ya misogynistic idiot

>better looking ones
I don't have an image that fully conveys how much I disagree with this sentiment.

self hating gay crypto fascist detected

Even before clicking on this thread I knew it was going to be completely derailed by autists.

>crypto-fascist
Nah, I am full on Fascist.
Nothing wrong with Fascism.

there's a lot fucking wrong with fascism and that's why literally the entire non-fascist planet ganged up to steam roll the ugly little austrian nitwit you wish you could fellate. log off

>lol I hit u that makes me right and u wrong.

The essence of your argument.
And it is funny to me how you think that you can try to bully someone out of this site.

>responding to /pol/, ironic or no
Just don't do it. You'll only encourage them.

Entirely possible it's one dude replying to himself my man.

Nah, I don't partake in such bs.

I do not know why this cunt took an objection to my views here but if he's gonna call me a crypto-fascist for them, I will at least correct him on me being fully aware of my own fascist views.

walk into traffic

Nah.

That's why I only read the op and.. wait, how did I read this? god dammit

OP's picture is her taking damage from her combination of chemicals.
On top of shaved eye brows and fake eye lashes.
I don't even

Jesus Christ, is the plot of your campaign just every kingdom teaming up to beat those fuckers down? They sound relentlessly cunty and evil, all it takes is everyone getting sick of their shit, it seems.

It's not just the eyebrows, yeah, it's the eyelashes, too. That's what really makes women like that look weird. Doesn't mean they're all bad people if they're into makeup to that degree, but Christ.

Also note: she would probably do a little better if it weren't the point, but look at the neck. You can spot a lot of these types a mile away because the foundation they use on their face doesn't blend into their neck and especially collarbone very well. It's a visibly different skin tone, look out for that.

I mean, Crypto-fascism isn't about not knowing your own beliefs, it's about knowing them and hiding them to better bring them about. But that guy's still an idiot.

Crypto-fascism makes no sense on Veeky Forums then, given how there is no point in hiding your views here.

Then go to /qst/.

Are you- what the fuck, dude, this isn't detective work. Can you see their pores? If no, avoid.

And it's one of the only corners of the internet flooded with actual open fascists, so it's kind of stupid to throw crypto-fascist around as an insult. This should all stop here before this thread gets even worse.

You know, her skin is pretty blotchy. It makes me think she might have that condition where you lose your hair. Alopecia?

Depends on the culture, social status, personal preference, etc.
