I think the old coffee thread fell off the board, so here we are.

Currently have a cold brew in my fridge of Kona Sunrise coffee, whole bean ground in my manual burr. Steep it for about 12 hours and we'll see how it ends up.

Thinking about getting a Chemex what do you fags brew in?

Can you go into a bit more detail as to your method of cold brewing? Or maybe direct me to a useful guide? I'm looking to get into it but I don't know how to start.

>i read a click bait article saying coffee sends you to an early grave!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your right on the drug addict part tho sugar is an addictive drug too

Oh so is dopamine so you should stop doing anything that you even remotely enjoy

Coarse grind your coffee, use 1 part to 4 parts water, steep for 12 hours, press, and for no grounds, take a coffee filter and rubber band over a mason jar and pour through.

Cold brew = concentrate with little bitterness, dilute 1:3 or whatever preference.

I may seem knowledgeable but this is my first cold brew as well. Just do it user, it'll be an interesting experiment for the both of us.

I used foodlab/seriouseats as a guideline then just did it.

I read once to add a few grains of salt to the grounds

Took some of the kick out, was actually best to neutralize that awful aftertaste in cheap coffee

anyone else do this?

never heard that before plus I graduated to buying whole bean, no local roasters :*(

neato. I tried a couple times last summer basically just steeping random amounts of coffee for random periods of time and it usually tasted like death. Should I just leave it in the french press at room temp? Or should I use something else?

I put cold water in and threw it in the fridge about 1:4

Did you dilute the finished product or no?

I tried it at various levels of dilution. The coffee I was using wasn't the freshest either, because I was sort of experimenting. I'll give it another go when I get back from college in like a week. thanks for the tips.

Find a bag with a roasted on date and it may help

Yeah, my pops buys the dank shit because we have an espresso machine, but I was using some costco stuff.

Maybe you can help me with espresso then... I did just buy a variety of ESE pods that are awesome but I didn't hone my skills with the grind a tamping before that

Sorry, I was out for a bit. Supposedly, you have to put around 30lbs of pressure down to get a good pour. You definitely want to get a good metal tamper if your setup didn't come with one. You'll know you got it right when the pour it a light brown and creamy color and looks like it already has milk in it.

Are we still posting fedora pics when someone claims to enjoy black coffee?

I'm just getting into coffee, I own a french press and a hand drip thing though I don't grind my own coffee yet. I have a few newbie questions
1) Is it worth spending alot on a nice grinder or should I just get a cheapo one?
2) Does it really affect the taste if my hand drip thing uses a steel filter?
3) Is there any way to learn latte art without spending a ton of money?
4) is there a consensus on decent bean brands

i DRIP THROUGH OR COLD BREW cAFE bUSTELO AND IT'S PRETTY MUCH AS GOOD AS ANY CUP OF COFFEE I'VE EVER MADE ALTHOUGH I WILL SAY THAT REAL KONA IS ANOTHER LEVEL BUT OVERALL i GAVE UP ON MY COFFEE FAGGOTRY FOR THE MOST PART.

Burr grinders are worth it if you like your coffee without lots of sludge and nearly-whole beans wasted. The cheap hand crankers work alright but can be a bit fine for french press. There's a whole mod scene.

Do you have a preference/ reccomendation for a french press? Not crazy high end but not shit.

I've been using a Bodum Brazil. I don't know what the other models offer besides shiny metal outside bits. Different screens, maybe? This one gets the jorb done.

Look at /r/coffee

They're better than us.

OP, do you also get coffee sediment with that french press?

Also, how the hell do you remove the bottom part for cleaning?

i just put water in and swirl and flush it lol

So, I'm thinking it's time to get a French press and coffee grinder and step up my coffee game. What does Veeky Forums recommend for a beginner pleb?

manual ceramic burr is a pain but decent results and cheap and any french press, mine is stainless cause my old glass one broke first use

That's what I have been doing so far but I am starting to see coffee "stains/gunk". Sometimes I put dish detergent but I would like to give it a proper clean up from time to time.

Please post your coffee grinders anons

Yes of course we still are.

Yes, the grinder is the most important of your coffee gizmos. Get a Hario skerton or mini-mill. Automatic burr grinders aren't good until you get into the $100 and above range.

Yes, you'll get a little more body because metal filters let in more of the oils that get filtered out by paper filters.

Water + soap?

You should always look for a local roaster. If there aren't any of those or any Stumptowns, Blue Bottles, etc in your area then order off of Happy Mug. You can always order off any hipster coffeeshop chain's website also, like Stumptown or Intelligensia. Illy and Lavazza are good mass-producers if you find them in your supermarket.

Bodum Chambord. Looks better and the thing that holds together the filter to the plunger is made of metal and not plastic.

The plunger thing unscrews and you can wash the filter.

Hario hand grinder and bodum chambord.

So I wrongly bought I bag of beans for espresso and I only have a french press. It smells really good and tastes good in mouth but for some reason it has a charcoal aftertaste. I use the ratio 1:10 and step it for 3 minutes. What to do? Tried less time but nothing changed.

I was never quite sure what people mean by black coffee

Is coffee + sugar considered black?

>that weird feel where the entire population of the country you live in drinks coffee without anything in it

That being said, somehow whenever I put milk in my coffee I shit like crazy

>Please tell me the rancilio rocky is worth getting for home use
>This one video crashed my hopes for it
>Don't want to spend 15 minutes cleaning it after every use
>Halp

I'm considering just going fuckit and ordering a Lido from an overpriced online shop in the UK and be done with it. Finding a good electric grinder at a decent price in this place is fucking hopeless ;__;

Rocky isn't any good

>Is coffee + sugar considered black?
Yes, just sweet. Sugar is a personal preference.

Cold brew fresh ground beans in a mason jar

Absolutely not. Black coffee means no additives of any kind. I'd even be reluctant to call an americano black, but I wouldn't want to correct it either.

Yea sort of my impression as well
Well it is well reviewed for people who use it a lot, like in small café's
But it doesn't seem very well suited for home use...

Black coffee means nothing added

Not really that, the grind quality is just shit. It's garbage for filter coffee and inadequate for espresso.

Black is nothing in it. Just the end result that comes out of the brew, the way god intended :^)
All jokes aside, I feel like cream and sugar are the crutch for bad coffee.

I do a splash of cream sometimes but never sugar.

Rate my plebness/10

10/10 being full pleb I'd say 2/10 2bh
A splash is ok, a lot of people I know dump that shit in. You're not even tasting coffee at that point. I usually drink black but I occasionally put whipped cream in mine like it's hit chocolate. Fun to eat some off the top.

So what do you use, and for what?
