for me, i try to avoid overly-fancy ethnic restaurants. the people who go to them wanna feel like they're exotic for eating there, but don't want to eat at some shitty hole in the wall, so the restaurant focuses more on the ambiance and less on the food. for example, i went to a korean place once with exposed brick walls, dim lighting, and jazz playing. the bulgolgi was $17 and this tiny portion came out that was the quality of something you'd get at a take-out asian place. it was totally drowning in bland brown sauce.
