Looking for the most sea-like scotch

What is the most sea-like scotch? Looking for strong tastes of iodine, seaweed, salt, and similar. From what I've tried so far Laphroaig seems to be the winner for me, but maybe I missed something? Also not sure if I should go for 10 or older like 18 or 25? Which one would have more defined sea-like taste?

why?

Because I like this taste a lot.

Am I missing something here?
If I poured a glass of scotch and it tasted like the fucking sea I'd take it straight back to the store.

>poured a glass of scotch and it tasted like the fucking sea
That's exactly my experience with Laphroaig 18, but I was instead happy about that, wonderful taste

If you like seawater why not just drink dirty martinis?

I like Ardbeg 10 yr.

I love it too, but eventually I kinda got tired of just smoky whisky and started to appreciate sea-like aromas.

Old Pultney is definitely "marine" but totally unsmoked.

>Laphroaig 10
If you like to taste care tires, probably. Quarter Cask is a way better whisky. If you insist on sea, Talisker 10. I cant believe nobody has said that.

iodine? isn't that shit poisonous? how do you know what it tastes like?

I'm with everyone else here, OP.

You need to ditch this fetish of scotch that tastes like whale semen and come back to the Highland/Speyside way of things.

I recommend the Balvenie double wood offerings. The 12 yr is good, but the 17 yr is fucking superb.

Why are scotchfags so cringey and fedora tier? I'm embarassed for you just reading this pretentious shit

Talisker, obviously.

I've tried Talisker 10 before, it tasted so much iodine! Not that it's bad, I liked it.

Not poisonous, it is essential nutrition. Go dissolve a few drops in a spoon of water and find out.

I've tried many highlands, they all seemed bitter and not interesting to me. I tried older as well, yes they have interesting quality about them, some coffee, some wood, so fruits, but I'm still not impressed.

Go back to your 24 pack of Natty light you fucking pleb.

I've noticed that Highlands and Speyside scotches can pick up the notes of the wood cask it's in a lot better than the smokier types.

Have you tried a port cask yet? Definitely a lot of sweetness with a smoother finish.

I've tried many things, not only scotch, and I understand how different casks change the drink and increase its complexity, but I just don't really like it. Yes sweet, yes sherry, yes some fruits etc, not interesting. I like when the taste is unusual, the one you won't pick in everyday food and drinks. Strong and unusual. Islay scotches are a revelation for me.

Can't help you. I tend to prefer oaky, grainy scotch

Ardbeg Corryvreckan.

The shit doesn't taste like the sea, it tastes like a dirty campfire.

I think your tastebuds are fucked up, user.

Just eat raw oysters with your scotch, you dumdum.

>dirty campfire
For me that's what Ardbeg 10 tastes like.

looking for a smokey scotch without much peet, any recommendations?

Easy - Longrow. It's smoked but I believe they use coal instead of peat, and it is not produced at Islay.

I heard it was Tallisker.

In that case have you tried this?

I got some from my brother. It's not really my cup of scotch, but it's definitely strong and unusual.

No I haven't yet but I was planning too. I've tried Uigeadail and liked it much less than 10.

Elemental Iodine gas: poisonous
Iodide salts (e.g. potassium iodide): afaik harmless as most other salts

I actually talked to the head manager of Lagavulin at a dinner party a while back. According to him, Lagavulin is supposed to sake like ocean spray, or give you the feeling of it.

Iodine is in the most foods you consume, naturally, like fruits, vegetables, meats. Anything can be poisonous if consumed excessively, even water and oxygen.

I tried Lagavulin, it tasted for me more like grilled meat.

He's talking about the iodine flavour mostly found in peaty scotches. Some people recall medicine when they taste it, other people recall seaweed. Some people don't like it, some people do. Sounds like you probably don't.

Anything I'd suggest has already been suggested.

I haven't had that many legit Scotches, but Talisker 10 has a distinct sea salt flavor, on top of being all around delicious. maybe the longer-aged version is more pronounced. Much more noticeable than the other 3-4 good Scotches I've had.

It's just an element of the entire flavor. i.e., it tastes like Scotch, with a hint of brine.

Talisker
/thread.

I'm not saying it's the best malt (i don't think so anyway), but OP asked for the most sea-like one and that's it. There's none that comes near it, it's definitely more sea-like than Laphroaig.

What do you think of the triple cask? I got a 12 year balvenie triple cask from the wife its good shit but almost too woody

Have you tried Highland Park? I always keep a bottle of that shit in the bar.

Talisker 10 is my favorite. Reasonably priced, too.

I dig the wood, personally, but it is true that it could have just a little touch more peat in it for balance. Same for the 12 desu. just finished a glass right now

I'm in the same boat OP.

I've tried all the Islay I could get my hands on and eventually came back to Laphroaig.

That's nonsense, Iodine salts are.
Elemental iodine itself doesn't really appear in nature at all.

Well I don't care then. Smoking is also toxic yet so many people smoke (I don't though). I just like this type of whisky and I will continue consuming it.

Yea the same. Right now I'm all in Laphroaig, but I saw Talisker being mentioned here several times, so I guess the next bottle I buy will be it, I've tried it only once before and don't remember well.

>(i don't though)
Nice humble brag.

My lucky negro!

>projecting this hard

no it's not.

Can't go wrong with 'ot style 'skey

and here I thought maybe I could enjoy one thread without shit-memes...

What's wrong with 'go 'scotch?

So why did you respond?

Yeah. The very reason iodized salt ought to be consumed is that people without regular seafood in their diet end up iodine deficient. Because most foods don't contain any, but we need it.

the closest thing that I've had that fits your description was Canadian Club.

Granted, it was from a bottle of Canadian Club that my friends found floating in the water while swimming on a beach and forgot to relay to me this information before I drank from it. Pretty sure it was half sea water.

I threw up a bit. I'm not ashamed.

and I suppose that it's not scotch, but rye, but fuck it close enough

So it's not found in most of the foods I consume. Thanks for supporting my assertion.

just leave

...

Well mem'd but what is 'ot?

Scot style Whiskey

Here's some more.

How 'tch 'ey is made

'tch'y pairs well with 'go'za. Can't complain.

Completely disagree. Talisker to me is more woody with a more spicy sort of smoke and some gingery flavors, nothing sea-like whatsoever to my taste.

Hee hee. You said "woody."

Oban

I wanted to prove I knew other descriptive words pertaining to whisky.

Talisker puts "made by the sea" line on their bottles, also they put them in cardboxes with sea printed on them, and they have bottlings named "Storm" in their range. So they definitely try to focus on marine theme.

Where is the Bowmore

Jura.

ITT

it's pretty remarkable how Veeky Forums can have the exact same conversation about the exact same 11 diageo/constellation products every day for years on end and think they're having a deep cultural experience

and by remarkable I mean horribly depressing

I splurged and bought a bottle of 'vulin 16 tonight. It's good but I like Talisker better. The best part of Lagavulin is the finish, meaty and lasts a long time.

Most people have each discussion once before they move on to do other things with their lives. You've hung around Veeky Forums long enough to see it occur over an over again. I can see how you find it horribly depressing.

I just don't get it. I'm drinking an Islay right now and none of it makes me think of the sea at all. Just smoky peat. I even used to live by the ocean. I don't get the whole sea thing people have with Islays. I almost think it might just be purely psychological, because it comes from an Island.

>he thinks he is going to get an intellectually stimulating experience on Veeky Forums
>he think s anything thats passed through his own head is intellectually stimulating

this. should taste like you're eating a peat bog.

What exactly do you drink? Try Talisker or better Laphroaig 18, they are the most marine in my opinion. Literally taste like sipping ocean.

I have. They both don't register as ocean-like to me. Kombu tastes like the ocean. Islay Scotch tastes like Islay Scotch

second for Laphroaig quarter cask, better whisky. Haven't had the 18

But Laphroaig is owned by Suntory...

best go back to the wiki and brush up user

I suggest Bowmore 15. It's an islay, but it isn't an overpowering peat monster. I find it has just the right amount of briny sea flavor and a hint of earthy peat.
