Because DFW had no significant life experience, spent his entire life funneled through academic institutions, wrote about uninteresting suburban America, and became a literary celebrity for it.

In short, people on Veeky Forums think and hope they'll end up like him with regard to literary celebrity, since their lives were equally uninteresting/not worth writing about.

sometimes people need heroes. if that sounds like bare sentimentality it is. sometimes you need it just to go on. If I couldn't look to someone outside of my immediate circle as an example of a good person I would just kill myself. we know he wasn't perfect. protip: BEE and all those other guys are just projecting (this word gets thrown around a lot but its true) their own failings onto DFW because they were never writers of his stature. They lacked the talent. They lacked the charisma and good looks which like it or not were part of the DFW experience and they can't handle it.
