No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

And what about a woman? Why should she stay in shape?

Why wouldn't it be the same reason?

I don't lift (fear joint injury), but I have been doing bodyweight exercises, cardio, and eating right for a while now. My mood is much better and I have a lot more energy. I also get horny easier/more often.

You're right. Though generally women don't care about strength, only about beauty. Why is a body that exercises beautiful? Should we aim for the aesthetic standard or the physical one. There's little difference in potential between a strong man with 15% body fat than one with 6%.

I work out to look good because I used to be fat and it sucked. Also it feels better in every way. Also if you read the art of war and read < 20 books per year fuck yourself.

gonna be a lot of greek wrestling and turkish bathhouses itt

>Should we aim for the aesthetic standard or the physical one?
Both have their benefits.

fuck being Veeky Forums
its all about being Veeky Forums

Art of War is a perfect fusion of empty platitudes and sheer common sense, voicing such intellectual gems as "a wise general will not urinate against the wind." It, like The Prince, is highly skippable.

Dickens is trash.

Zarathustra is probably essential to this list, though. Confronting the inherently contextualized, subjective nature of significance in general and social approval in particular is essential to intrinsic self-improvement, as is understanding and overcoming the nature of the master/slave moral dynamic. Its one of his later works and may be abstruse without previous Nietzsche experience, though.

>its all about being Veeky Forums
Take your consumerist idolatry elsewhere you heathen

Being strong means jack shit. Who cares if you're strong? Are you planning on being some stone mason? Good health to have a chance at a longer life is what some one should strive for. Aesthetics is preference.

Where to start with neecha

>Who cares if you're strong?
I care if I'm strong. I want to be able to look in the mirror and be proud. Aesthetics is more than preference; it's the reason many people work out.

The greeks, desu.

not him but for the purposes of this thread Ecce Homo is a good choice. it's the one where he goes on about how you should go on walks to think and shit like that, iirc

Women are defined by the softness of their bodies, men by the hardness. That said, physical prowess does not correlate with extreme muscular definition: take dancers of traditional ballet. Both men and women are in absolute peak physical condition, yet only the men visually show their extreme muscular definition. The women must retain the soft lines of their legs (this is, above all else, tantamount), their incredibly strong cores must be covered by stiff or concealing costumes, and their arms basically have to border on the absolute minimum strength to hold them up for long periods of time to maintain balance and the lines of the body.

How can you see that you're strong in the mirror? Are you dead lifting 400lbs while doing that? I've known fat men that were strong.

Anyone know where this Socrates quote is from?

So, what do you think about chubby women? I'm not saying fat, just the average woman that doesn't care about exercising (at least to stay to in shape). Are they in the wrong?

Section 37 (I think) of the World as Will and Representation. The section on beauty and grace.

>How can you see that you're strong in the mirror?
I'm not fat

Daybreak

he never said it

I started to workout after my first long term relationship ended. to feel better about something. then I got another gf and quit. now it's 6 years later and I've been at it a year now to make my depression less shit. makes me feel better for sure. that and my meds. really good combo. along with cardio and eating healthy. it's like some stupid shit that you think about then get happy, cuz ur being positive blah blah blah. oh and after a while you start looking better. I almost want to be single again so I can slay some bitches on tinder.

See , honestly. While "large" women can have beauty (which Schopenhauer thinks lies in sexual attraction in regards to human aesthetics, and may be right), their bodies are usually an impediment to grace.

A body with beauty and grace is, by definition, closer to the ultimate expression of the aesthetic than simply a beautiful body.

Yes, he did. I just found it. Its from Memorabilia.

Sadly, I still don't know jack shit about aesthetics, but am working on it. Still a long way from Schopie though.

But for the little I know him for, why should we listen to everything he has to say? Isn't the dude very sexist or something like that? I heard about it on this board, never checked it myself.

>Xenophon's Socrates
should someone tell him or...?

Xenophon's a cleaner source in general compared with Plato. He knew him longer and didn't need to rewrite him to get his own foot in the door. Hasn't anyone laughed at you over the Republic yet?

There's just something incredibly satisfying about lifting a heavier weight than you could do before.

I would do it even if it made me look ugly.

>“It is true enough that when I lifted a certain weight of steel, I was able to believe in my own strength. I sweated and panted, struggling to obtain certain proof of my strength. At such times, strength was mine, and equally it was the steel’s. My sense of existence was feeding on itself.”

>Isn't the dude very sexist or something like that? I heard about it on this board, never checked it myself.
you sweet summer child

Are you serious, dude? So what if he was bitter about his exploits with women--he was bitter about playing second fiddle to Hegel his entire academic career as well. That doesn't mean he didn't have wonderful insights that furthered mankind's idea of how the world works.
Here's a secret: everyone, philosopher or farmer, has personal and culture biases. It's your job to separate them from the truth.

>philosopher or farmer
why are you so mean to the heideggerians?!?

BECAUSE HE'S SHIT AT POETRY
even though his writings on it number among the best ever written

part of it is purely practical; exercise improves my overall mood and is likely to increase my sex appeal. however there's also an aesthetic dimension. just as i want to keep my wits sharp, i want to be as physically strong and visually appealing as i can reasonably be. i feel that these work in conjunction with one another and allow me to realize my full potential as a person. i find the idea beautiful so i work towards it.

That's why I said I didn't know anything about him. Wasn't discrediting him, just telling you what I heard. I agree with what you said though.

once you get used to his accent his philosophy is like poetry.

That's actually a pretty good list. I'd leave out Art of War though, that book is a meme.

>5'7"

what's the point in lifting?

if you read fiction to "cultivate your mind" pls stop

Running is the purest sport and an absolute blast. Nothing beats a hard early-morning 8-miler or track workout.

In my experience short guys look a lot more ripped than they actually are and some of them can lift more than three times their body weight.

but no one will take me seriously, user. i'll never be the ubermensch or the father figure i desire.

books for this feeling?

If you let your feelings of inferiority define who you are, then you will be inferior. If people scorn you because of your stature then they are not really made up of high quality human stock desu. Don't let autistic trolls on Veeky Forums and vapid tinder sluts make you feel bad. The main point of lifting weights or any athleticism is competition with oneself. It's self improvement for your own sake, not to get people to "take you seriously." That being said, If you go to the gym and work hard people will take note. I see tall young men all the time who could get really strapping if they applied themselves, but all they do is stand around talking, doing a few curls while checking themselves out in the mirror, or getting their friends to help them half-rep a barbell they're not ready for. Those are the kind of people I don't take seriously. There are teenage girls, fat men, and tiny Asians who are far stronger and more capable.

You are as tall or taller than any Greek or Roman. In Alexander's army you may have actually been too tall and heavy for the cavalry and would have had to fight in the infantry.

well said.

>dead lifting 400lbs
>Strong

Does anyone actually read books on strength training here? Highly recommend dinosaur training

>meds

the guy who made this chart just likes realism i think

What's that saying on Veeky Forums?
"You can't be Veeky Forums without being Veeky Forums."

being fit makes me feel better (mens sana in corpore sano)

aesthetics

gurls

Yeah Rick Owens said "working out is modern couture"

that was.. actually really nice user

thanks, you have a heart of gold, don't let people take it away from you

“Humans are built to move. We evolved under conditions that required daily intense physical activity, and even among individuals with lower physical potential, that hard-earned genotype is still ours today. The modern sedentary lifestyle leads to the inactivation of the genes related to physical performance, attributes that were once critical for survival and which are still critical for the correct, healthy expression of the genotype. The genes are still there, they just aren't doing anything because the body is not stressed enough to cause a physiological adaptation requiring their activation. The sedentary person's heart, lungs, muscles, bones, nerves and brain all operate far below the level at which they evolved to function, and at which they still function best.”

“A weak man is not as happy as that same man would be if he were strong. This reality is offensive to some people who would like the intellectual or spiritual to take precedence. It is instructive to see what happens to these very people as their squat strength goes up.”

“Strong people are harder to kill than weak people and more useful in general.”

It makes me feel more attractive, which improves my interactions with other people, which improves my quality of life considerably. I wish there were some deep, meaningful reason beyond that, but there isn't.

Lifting purely for athletic rather than cosmetic purposes, however, is the most rewarding incentive.

Sex after a good workout is fucking mindblowing.

this lol.

Also, if you read for "brain gains", fucking kill ya self

Because I enjoy it. And I'm very close to 1plate x5 The Press™

I heard it was from Xenophon, but it's more likely that it's just a meme.

Just go on pornhub gay already

I like to look like a Chad and have people think I'm a superficial douchebag to then astound them when they find out how cultured I am.

>implying Chad isn't already cultured

this is now a Veeky Forums CBT thread

(no its not)

disgusting belly button

You feel good and look good when working out regularly. It isn't that hard.

muh naturalistic fallacy

Reading because it's fun and useful
Exercising because it's fun and useful

Veeky Forums contradicts itself a lot, as many will say that only ottermode or autschwitz/heroin addict can be Veeky Forums

being fit doesn't mean you have to be huge

Could you say more about this? Or possibly share your pdf?

>All of that aphoristic bullshit

Holy fuck

I work out and considerably Veeky Forums and I don't need pseudy rhetoricians to incentivise me lmao

I work out and exercise because endorphin releases feel great. Also because girls are a nice concept

It's from Plato's Republic.

Yeah that chart triggered me as well.

I'm imagining some r9k autist "turning his life around" picking up a copy of meditations and picturing himself as some ancient indian ascetic taking in the wisdom of the buddha on day 12 of no fap

No, that level of corniness is exclusive to Veeky Forums's dudebreh culture. /r9k/ actually has a good reading list.

Its on mediafire here
I saw the best resuts of my life doing 20 rep squats and heavy singles on overhead press. Both of which I first read about in this book
I also really like Canditos programs
