Anybody read The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu? I like it so far. Will probably pick up his novel.

>consultcucks

>Book is labeled as sci fi
>It's science fantasy
>"I want to write sci-fi but barely know shit about science"

>submitting to arbitrary damnation

We all know the real cucks are. I'll be busy enjoying my skin spy harem. Praise the no-god

>these kitschy images

Does A Song of Ice and Fire get better after A Game of Thrones? I was left disappointed by the book because it isn't much better than the show despite having a window into what people are thinking or feeling as things happen.

Picked up Hyperion and God Emperor of Dune yesterday. So far, Hyperion is surprisingly eloquent and I'm expecting Dune 4: Electric Boogaloo to be like chugging sand.

>"I want to write sci-fi but barely know shit about technology"

hello cyberpunk and steampunk, how are you doing this fine day?

Book three is the best, four is garbage and five is alright. One and two are alright, with one being better.

I tried reading that fantasy novel he wrote, The Grace of Kings, but didn't get past the prologue.

>Cyberpunk
>It tries to be bladerunner
>Steampunk
>Typical "flying ships and goggles"

I wish biopunk was popular.

>Typical "flying ships and goggles"

And also the characters are all Madame de Pomfre and Lord Ascot, because nothing is more "punk" than white/European nobility during the industrial revolution.

First for autism general
We all autistic.

Currently halfway through A Voyage to Arcturus

Wouldn't biopunk be cyborgs? Human/machine co-adaptability? Like Neal Asher books? People mod their bodies in that, same with altered carbon.

Is it good?

Yeah it's alright. The writing doesn't go too deep but it's all about different people's spirituality on another planet

First for Orphans of Chaos by John C. Wright. May the feminist drown in tears of helpless fury as we enjoy and may this book the #1 read of 2016.

Is the Book Depository the best place to buy books online?

>Buy books

>reading John C. Fedora YA to spite "feminists"

Never used it, Thriftbooks is good though

That's probably more posthuman, though there's some overlap

You can't pirate a book or I would.

Thanks I'll check it out.

>an assassin doesn't hwve friends, only targets

>Urban Fantasy
>Young adult
>School setting
>ALL FOUR DIMENSIONS
>babby's first Latin
The feminists can keep the cancer.

What's wrong with urban fantasy or FOUR DIMENSIONS?

I'm a huge fan/apologist of JCW but I'd never recommend either Orphans or Everness.

This. I've yet to find one that's actually ABOUT anything - they all seem to emulate H.G. Wells, but miss the actual points he made in favor of superficial aesthetic stuff like "brass" or "clockwork". Even just a protagonist seeing the Empire from the outside, like Steampunk Gandhi or something, would be a nice change.

FIVE DIMENSIONS is where it's at desu senpai

>You can't pirate a book
What?

>Amelia can see in four dimensions. Victor can control the molecular arrangement of matter. Vanity can find secret passageways where none existed before. Colin is a psychic. Quentin is a warlock.
It's another one of 'those books'.

>book
>noun: book; plural noun: books; noun: the book
>1.
>a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers.

You wouldn't print a book!

>Download book
>Print it out
>Glue or sew the pages together and bound the covers on

Your move Sanderson.

Printing is just as expensive as buying.

>Buy e-reader
>Download book

Its not that hard

>four dimensions
Actual 4D or just watered down American "4D = time!"

The original post was about 'pirating a book', not 'pirating an e-book'. Get it together man.

What if you copy it out by hand into one of those cloth-bound notebooks?

>Its [CURRENT YEAR]
>Not having accepted that print is dead

Are you literally retarded??

That is not dead which can in my shelf lie
And with DRM and flat batteries even death may die

That's not pirating, it's just sharing. Like how if I buy a DVD and lend it to you, its not pirating, its just sharing. It's only when it takes place on a mass scale that it becomes piracy.

I don't think so.

I don't know how you guys stand reading off of a pad.

>And with DRM and flat batteries even death may die
Batteries last for days.
>DRM
Why do you think I pirate books?

>I don't know how you guys stand reading off of a pad.
There is barely a difference between reading a book on paper or on an e-reader.
An e-reader is lighter to carry, you can instantly translate words you don't know and you don't need bookmarkers.

I get the benefits of an e-reader you dolt, I just mean the difference in the actual texture of the reading surface. Would you read a novel on your computer screen?

>Would you read a novel on your computer screen?
Obviously not I'd get a headache after an hour or so.

But that comparison is stupid because an e-reader doesn't use LCD or LED displays.
They can display text without requiring any backlight which means you won't get a headache from reading on it.

If you ever tried reading on an e-reader you would notice that there is very little difference between paper and the screen of an e-reader.

I have used my sister's e-reader, and sure it's not like reading on a phone, but there's definitely something missing when compared to a book. Like eating fast food instead of at a proper restaurant.

Her body extends into extra dimensions of space. It's very dark there because there's more volume light has to fill and it takes a long time to get anywhere. Five dimensions is even worse on that front.

Except for when the thoughts-create-reality people are observing her, then she's just a normal girl. She can override the brains of the no-free-will-deterministic-universe autist people by directly manipulating them from a dimension they can't conceive of.

>Would you read a novel on your computer screen?
I've read dozens. Maybe a hundred. I can lie in my hammock and turn pages with a game controller, no need to do the work of page turning.

o lawd is this gonna be another
>I'm going to claim that e-readers are the same as screens and no amount of evidence is going to convince me that my opinion is wrong as I continue to harp about this qualm for an entire thread
'argument' chain?

What a world.

>gotta resurrect that girl, better make a contract with a fairy for it
>let's do black magic on these Napolitans to bring them back from hell and ask about some cannons, no I don't know how to send them back
>hey, there's all these roads behind every mirror! How about I just walk down 'em and see what happens
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is a terrific comedy.

You've read Orphans?

No, it's identical, even more practical.

If you like biopunk read Finch by VanDerMeer.

It's a standalone work, very solid.

Where would I be able to post short sff stories for others to read and post commentary or criticism?

How about here? Come on guys, let's do something new.

>read user's heartfelt yet incredibly poorly written prose full of awkward constructions that tells where it should show and vice versa, filling the threads with his poorly-planned ideas that he thought were original because he hasn't read one book the rest of us have, all reeking of his own insecure voice while leaving all characters indistinguishable and all locations bland
>offering up my work that's even worse than that

any good fantasy novels/series/whatevers where the protagonist isn't a teenager pls thanks

Best Conan story?

I think I can recall a few.
>Infinite Stratos
>Hundred
>Gakuen Toshi no Asterisk
>Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry
That should get you started.

I'm not gonna make it to TGO release... help me..

This new Great Ordeal spammer is rapidly approaching Dino user levels of obnoxious.

This no God shit sounds unbelievably edgy t b h

It's at least 2 people counting me.

Beyond the Black River iirc

I was thinking about reading Bakker. Is it just more shit with complex and daring themes like "war is bad" and "religion is bad"?

You are annoying, but not nearly as the little girl/braindead dino spammer.

Any books with a filthy little girl protagonist?

Yes, the porn I wrote about your sister

Can anyone recommend me some good biopunk? I'm curious to see what it's about.

I looked at the op lists and couldn't see any there.

See

>i care about the science more than plot, characters and prose

Thanks mate.

What e-reader would you suggest?

Kindle Paperwhite

>We need to stop the enemy reinforcements from arriving at the battle! I know, I'll teleport the whole battleground to another contintent for a time. Yes, I'll get everyone back, probably.

How deep is your pocket? My isn't, got a Kobo for 30$ from ebay, works perfectly

On the other note, are there any good SFF themed albums like Nightfall in Middlearth and Hardworker?
Or literature in general, Leviathan was pretty dank.

Is it easy to put pirated/downloaded e-books on there? I heard that some are locked to the store.

Also one of me m8s is selling a 4th gen Kindle for $50AUD, whereas a paperwhite is $174AUD. Is it worth getting instead? I don't think it's a touch screen.

Not very deep.

>Is it easy to put pirated/downloaded e-books on there?
Yes.

The newest Paperwhite is what you want because it has 300dpi and the light. The nice thing about it is that you will pretty much never have to buy a new one ever and it pays for itself after pirating a couple of books. Though that price is a bit whack, I got mine for 99€. On amazon.com it's $120 dollars too (you just missed an event where it was reduced by 20 bucks).

>Is it easy to put pirated/downloaded e-books on there? I heard that some are locked to the store.

If you buy a book from amazon, then it'll be locked - however there's a plugin for calibre that cac unlock them if you have the Kindle.

The Kindle itself works like a USB drive so you can put pirated books on there. Kindle's format is mobi or azw3, while most pirated books are epub. Calibre (free) can convert from epub to mobi/azw3 easily and also can be used as a library management program.

About the Paperwhite vs 4th gen - I like the light since I usually read while my wife sleeps. if you don't need the light maybe go for a 4th gen, the touchscreen of the paperwhite is a bit annoying (good for underlining, not so good for page turning, it's usually a bit awkward)

Kindle complicates pirating.
Don't get a kindle.
Kobo is drag and drop, like with any other usb device, no extra fuss.
I got this one from the seller, cheap, best buy this year honestly. Not so much for SFF, but conservative non fic, philosophy and theology.
ebay.com/itm/Kobo-Touch-eReader-905-2GB-WiFi-6-4-Colors-/281932346147?var=&hash=item41a47a3323:m:mvbO6tamIB6pf8UL1R-ZH5A

I have this too. Served me well, I've read more than 120 books over two years and a half.

Been thinking about upgrading to Glo HD tho, that backlight and superior resolution will be a major help in getting through The Wheel of Time.

It's a short story nigga, stop projecting. Not everyone sucks at writing.

It barely does. Select and press on convert, done.

Don't buy that Kobo if you aren't a mega poorfag. Terrible resolution, half the DPI of any modern ereader. Don't cheap out on a one time investment you will use for 10+ years.

You guys mention the light, are you referring to a backlight? Why would you want an e-reader with a backlight? I already have a tablet, I just hate reading on a screen.

I duno about this, the major stores here don't seem to sell any cheap Kobos and I'm dubious about buying 2nd hand, especially when I have a 4th gen Kindle on offer for $50.

The light on an ereader is different from a screen - it doesn't shine the light onto your face, but it shines it onto the reader from above and doesn't hurt your eyes. There's probably some better explanation videos on youtube, but you 100% want this. You'll see why when you have it, you use it even during the day and it looks 'natural'.

Like I've said, I got that one from the very same seller.
It's been quite useful, unles you care about speed of page turning or whatever, which doesn't matter really and the backlight, which normal books also don't have so it isn't really a problem.
If you can get a 4th gen kindle for 50$ well you should go with it I guess, I had to order online because they sell for like 200-300$ in stores here because fuck poor countries.

Just watched a few, you're right, but I don't think the slightly increased DPI and backlight are worth the cost of taking the Paperwhite over the 4th gen.

Yeah I think you're right.

I'm not sure if recommending this is going to be a faux pas, but an online serial writer is writing a fantastic biopunk story right now called "Twig", if you want to check it out.

>slightly increased DPI
It's almost double.

It's very well worth the up price, but do what you want.

>15: shitposting about muh dinosaurs
>16: wanting pregnancy to be covered more in novels

It's just words. Does the difference between 167 and 300 DPI really matter that much? It's not as if I'm photoshopping on the e-reader.

Not him and not an expert but I do have a Kobo Touch and while extremely handy it does get a little tiring to read, especially in low light environments.

Yes, and I already said so. I'm not here to do a sales pitch mate, just do whatever. I just think it's a very bad decision to go with the outdated one on something you will use for years pretty much daily.

I know what you're saying, but $50 isn't a huge investment to be wrong on, whereas $176 is. I'll see if I can compare them in person before I make my decision, thanks for your help.

Hmm okay thanks.

It shows letters which forms books just fine, not sure how it is not a long term investment, unless it breaks.

Hey OP where do you get all these cool ass backgrounds from?

literally just google "fantasy" and go on images
