Read something about the never-ending winter, of course. Something like survival stories in the Arctic or about the Gulag. Last summer, when the nights became unbearable, I would read The Left Hand of Darkness, then a lovely little book called Hunter in the Taiga (can't remember the name of the author--Russian, of course), then, in desperation, I would resort to reading Wikipedia articles about the Yakuts and other such Siberian tribes--their life, language, survival techniques in that cutting, deadly cold that is their world.
