Vocabulary thread

You may have a large general vocabulary Veeky Forums, but how much specific terminology do you know and how many do you have to look up?

I find this chart way more interesting than I should I think.

desu I would still prefer that to using contemporary brand names

take your average YA novel

>he slipped on a pair of converse/nikes

what's going on here?

>I would still prefer that to using contemporary brand names

how do I become armond white

This is as good a place as any to ask this, but what do you call the captions/placards or whatever that accompany artworks in musuems/galleries?

it's just called a label

That septate hymen looks like something out of nightmares.

kek were you looking for something more literary

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_label

Classic example of over-thinking

thank you.
no i just felt like caption was bad but couldn't think of anything else
yes i agree.

A is GOAT

Open up your kindle and post the last 10 words you looked up (not including accidental lookups, and words you were fairly sure of but just wanted to verify)

derriere
bilious
lepidopterist
raceme
catamaran
motile
balalaika
filigree
klaxon
lapiz lazuli

>rate of genderfluidity
Kek

it would be best if this was just serious, but having one Unown in there.

A-C are all good in my book.

who /mayotransnigger/ here?

Virgin here. I didn't even know that there were different types of hymen... Cribriform hymen reminds me of when you google trypophobia.

It depends on your interests. It's a terrible idea to save up these pictures, create a deck on Anki and managing to remember it. It must be coherent with your personality so you have a real understanding—which means a better and wiser use—and a non-flowery prose poisoned with dozens of words from unrelated lexical fields. You should use a medical terminology if you're actually a physician.

Or, of course, you're writing a character with said specialist knowledge. I hate it when authors write characters who are experts in field they themselves are obviously ignorant of.

This reminds me of that passage in Underworld where the reform school teacher tells the young protagonist about all the different parts of a shoe. I never really understood why he did that.

I constantly have to look up pieces of (what I consider) obscure clothing. Why do authors have to use half a dozen different words for simple things like cardigans and jackets? do I just have poor knowledge of fashion or do writers use obscure words to seem more modern and sophisticated?

When writers go into detail about specialized fields do they pick something they're already an expert at or do they pick something first and do extensive research on it?

it's usually something they already have more than passing (usually pretty solid) interest/knowledge of, but of course authors will research a bit more in depth.

I knew eight out of those ten. Feels good, man.

>no cocking piece
>no sight assembly
>no magazine floorplate
>no rear sight
>doesn't differentiate rear and front sight

Shit tier, and that doesn't even count the omitted internal parts.

ayy fuck u pal it's just a coinkydink, post yours

Literal fucking roastie.
