>Book 5
>we should really move against Sammael, man I'm sick of this guy he needs to fucking die already
>Book 7
>Sammael is not only still alive but very much a thorn in Rand's side with his constant scheming and shit

Why the fuck is he even still alive, I mean COME ON RAND

Real question is, does your autism run so deep you can't spare yourself of that crap by simply picking up something good for a change?

Why is shallan such a shitter?

If I start something, I finish it.

Why is Jack Vance so based?

I read through a handful of his short stories when I was doped up on painkillers after an operation. The story where all of the wizard dude's friends turn into girls as part of some conspiracy against the male sex was a wild fuckin ride.

How do people stand Sanderson?
The prose can be described closest as being raped by a dildo covered with sandpaper.

His prose is rarely so bad that it jolts you out of the story. I would say it's invisible more than anything else. Sure it's a far cry from good, but I doubt his readers (or most readers) care. His dialogue on the other hand....

He's not my cup of tea, but people like his ideas/creativity/worldbuilding. He really does do things nobody else does

Dialogue is a part of prose really.

>He really does do things nobody else does
If you never watched Dragonball Z maybe.

ok

>Planes
Are you shitting me, nigger?

...

Magic systems are different from worldbuilding, though - worldbuilding is just having a lot of interesting people, places and things in your world. Listing dozens of glyphs and magic rules can be a PART of worldbuilding, even a key one, but it's not enough to make the world interesting or believable in and of itself.

Rothfuss is a legend. Find one author with prose so sublime as him

Same reason Kaladin is an edgy gary stu.
I skipped all of Shallan's "muh so insightful scholarly lifestyle" horseshit after a few chapters.

>I focused my alar

top fucking kek

I need some help with reading comprehension.
> She was wearing jeans, a black tank top, and a loose black man's shirt that had the sleeves rolled up about twenty times and draped over her like a trench coat...
>a black man's shirt
Did the main character get cucked offscreen again, or have I spent too much time on /pol/?

She meant a man's shirt that was black

You should know that nobody includes PoC in SFF anyways

black [man's shirt] not [black mans] shirt

That's some awful prose.

>I skipped all of Shallan's "muh so insightful scholarly lifestyle" horseshit after a few chapters.
kek so did I. Shit was boring as fuck compared to Kaladin's story.

Did anyone else have to skip through hundreds of pages in Malazan when they read it? And have any of you actually re-read the entire series?

Looking for a fantady book with a lot of focus about fighter characters-The fights themselves, training sessions, etc.
Any suggestions?

I listen to it on audiobook at work, so I don't mind the drudgery.

I'm on Midnight Tides and still having fun.

>tfw some britbong already has their hands on age of myth
It hurts

...

She's wearing jeans, a camisole and a men's shirt over her shoulders like a cape.

or she's wearing it like those ladies who turn men's shirts into skirts/dresses

>"and they're a perfect stick antagonist for our hard northmen trope"
>he ripped out his own kidneys

I remember reading the first four books and loving them a lot then stalling out completely on Midnight Tides for like 2 months because I couldn't get into the new setting and characters at all.

Alright, I'm going to read Stormlight Archive to get a well informed view of Sanderson's work rather than listen to you faggots say, "It's anime shit!"

"Gee this book looks interesting..." I think as I browse the new arrival section at my local library.

"but wait, what's that?!"

>BOOK 1 OF 3 IN THE OVERWROUGHT FANTASY NAME CYCLE: THE FIRST QUARTER OF A INTERESTING STORY

My cry of "NOOOOOOO!" echoes through the stacks, a hobo browsing porn on the computers yells at me to shut up as the approach of security guards forces me to flee into the parking lot.

I agree. I wish people could write interesting standalones again.

This was my experience the one time I tried to venture into a book store rather than pirating or borrowing from my friends.

>Each book is 600 pages long
>Most of it is filler and redundancy

We need a list of the best standalone fantasy novels.

Any dungeonpunk novels? I'm working on a sort of meta dungeon delving work loosely based on classic D&D crawls and Stone Soup roguelike games.

This is how you make a living writing m8

Blame the lack of general literacy

>BOOK 2 OF 3 IN THE OVERWROUGHT FANTASY NAME CYCLE: THE FIRST QUARTER OF A INTERESTING STORY
>NONE OF THE OTHER BOOKS ARE EVEN BEING SOLD IN THE BOOKSHOP
Fixed it for you

I dig it, user.

>the city planner was autistic

Why is it so hard to write a story and have the world come in naturally as it progress? Why do hacks like Sanderson feel the need to spend pages describing why Medieval Ichigo's death scythe allows him to perform instant transmission despite his opponents clever use of Haki?

I still haven't finished the First Law because my local bookstore doesn't have the third one.

>when half the book is descriptions of clothing/food/traveling/future-guns/space ship components/author's opinions on politics

I found this list on goodreads of fantasy books to avoid at all costs:

goodreads.com/list/show/35446.The_Grimdarks#9300768

Have you heard of online shopping m8?

Underrated post right here.
Sick of seeing the "lol I don't wanna read something so loooooong and booooooring" meme on /sffg/ so often, especially concerning WoT and Malazan. If you don't have the attention span to finish either of these amazing series, you should legitimately consider another hobby.

Sanderson is good but not great, and probably receives more praise than he deserves. That's why Veeky Forums hates him.

>that direction was now DOWN for him

14 DAYS TIL THE WORLD DIES

>age of myth is out

Jack Vance
Clark Ashton Smith
Mervyn Peake
Lord Dunsany
Mean Gene Meme Wolfe

And before you call me a dinosaur:

Guy Gavriel Kay

Why do anons like you feel the need to make themselves look like fools criticizing books they haven't read? Is it the (You)s?

Wait so what, Felisin didn't even need to OPEN the book of draidgna to become Shaic reborn? wtf!
This shit is weird

Sanderson has better prose than Rothfuss, which is an achievement in how bad it is.
Rothfuss writes like a teenager who thinks adjectives will make the writing good.

Nice try, tumblr.

Yeah its all shit except for GRRM who's barely average.

FUCKING blood mirror NEVER

The Goddess just chose her. Also what language are you reading this in?

I wonder if in 40 years(when the cosmere series is finished) if Sanderson and the other current authors will be known as classics, replacing Peake, Vance and Wolfe.

The Veeky Forums 5 decades from now will be calling people plebs if they didn't read Sanderson .

Malazan is a meme series, a real fucking struggle to get through the last few books.

>all the GRI books we discuss here are on there
>GoT /tv/ general user says anything but GURM is bad
Not even surprised.

Most GRI is on pair with Martin, which is to say it varies from mediocre to shit.

ARC user is sitting gloating at us right now....

English audiobooks.

They're GRRM imitations, GRRM might be shit in occasion but at least he's the original shit. Rothfuss reads like a fat nerd's power fantasy.

>They're GRRM imitations
Did you look at the list in question?

Guy Gavriel Kay

he's right, about 80% of the books on that list are GRRM imitators

I resent the implication that First Law, THE seminal work of pomo fantasy is a GRRM copy

It transcends the genre, ASOIAF dreams of reaching such lofty heights

Why is everyone shilling malazan here? It's not a good series

Plebs frequent these threads in dangerous numbers.

If the rate of kids with autism keeps increasing like it has been, then sure.

That's impossible, it's the type of series which offers nothing aesthetically or has any other kind of literary value other authors you mentioned have.
It's like asking yourself is King or whatever else is popular will be read alongside John Williams or Flannery O'Connor.
Unless the other user is right and there is an intellectual apocalypse of some sort.

I don't understand, with people reading at an all time low, one would guess that you'd be happy someone is reading books at all

Reading Hunger Games is no different from playing brainless video games and the like, so not really.

Reading nothing is better than reading trash.
People who read trash get the feeling that they know stuff and are exceedingly educated because they read Sanderson and 49 Laws of Power or some other pop sci/self help bullshit.
Not reading at least doesn't damage the intellect like trash does.

There's nothing wrong with reading genre fiction for entertainment and reading non-fiction or working through textbooks for learning.

Who are you trying to impress on this anonymous chinese frogposting and memes board?

Do you think anyone cares what you do or don't read and that people think you are a cool guy on the internet for reading certain books over others?

No one cares about you faggot, no one even knows if you are one user from the next.

People who rely only on texbooks are quite stunt in my experience because the focus is something extremely narrow.
I don't think there's anything wrong with reading books for fun, but when reading trash is your main activity in reading, it becomes a problem.

Epic

When was the last time there was actually an interesting stand alone fantasy that wasn't part of a series or trilogy, King? I'm guessing Eyes of the Dragon was alright. Then again that's part of a larger grand scheme of things.

Gene Wolfe only took 4 books to do BOTNS

If your shit cant be finished within that or less I probably dont need to bother.

I'll be fair with guys like Pratchett who tty to tell diffierent stories im every other book. But if you take 6+ books to tell a single story then you are fucking up as a writer.

Its because the market changed. Back in the 1950s fantasy was quite short and stand alone, so you got The Broken Sword and the Dying Earth and LotR being split into 6 slim parts for its original publication.

Now it has been demonstrated that the public wants more and publishers will give it to them.

Wolfe never intended it to be 4 books
True story he started out writing a short story, then it grew into a novella, then novelette, then novel, and finally a trilogy
He thought the third part was a bit bigger than the others so he went back and added the story telling competition to pad it out so it could be split giving 4 books.

Yea I remember him saying something like that in an interview.

Honestly I may have been a little overbearing on the point. Other anons bring up a good point in publication standards varying with the times. Even today we see publishers sending out 1000+ page single books if they feel confident in the author. Most book trilogies average around that size.

I guess my big point is this: no matter what size your story is, dont waste time.

Then I guess I'm a pleb because the filler story telling contest was my favorite moment of BOTNS.

Lol I remember GW himself being surprised at that being most peoples favorite part too

Holy fucking shit they actually did it the absolute madmen

That user who said they would announce TWOW right after the finale was right all along

fuck me, I never expected this

You can't really stretch a meaningful story past 1500 pages, and most will crumble and have tons of filler by that point. Especially when you have multiple perspectives.

Remembering Tom's Fondue was pretty long.

I really don't get this anti-dinosaur guy. I mean, I get that he has bad taste, but whatever, this is sffg, lots of people here have bad taste. What I don't get is how he classifies authors as dinosaur authors. Gene Wolfe is a living author, who is still active and publishing works. Wolfe published a book in 2015, and is set to publish another in 2017. Rothfuss last published a book in 2011. How, then, is Wolfe used as an example of a dinosaur author while Rothfuss is presented as the poster child of modern fantasy authors?

I just want some consistency and internal logic in your shitposting, user.

What Wolfe publishes nowadays are hardly even real books filled with passion desu, he just churns out one mediocre short work after the other. He will probably die without writing another great.

If fucking Rothfuss is the best modern fantasy has to offer then modern fantasy is hot garbage.

popular =! best

Dinosaur guy mostly appears to be a harmless memester. The only legitimate fucktard is the idiot who thinks that women writing = automatically bad. However both are trying to come up with excuses out of thin air for excluding books from their reading repertoire and therefore both viewpoints are arguably cancerous.
