Maybe your problem was that you expected attention from people but you didn't really give it to them. Here some small insight, you should never start a relationship, if the person who you're starting it with changes their way of living because of it. (Changes of their own will, not just because you met them)
Because at one point it may be that they regrett doing it, if they came to the consent that they didn't want a way of living that is bad for them before you met, you have a much more stable relationship.
