Thanks so much, m8

>recent crackdown on good torrent search engines
This happened?

And, before you proceed to verbally abuse me, I'd like to say that I'm only an occasional pirate.

Kickass.to owner was caught after he made a legal purchase on iTunes (the irony). When the authorities asked Apple to give them all the private informations they had on him, they proceeded like the proud privacy-conscious company they are.

That comes after other popular platforms being targeted (isohunt, tpb, etc).

>you proceed to verbally abuse me,
I don't think you'll get verbally abused for torrenting here. This isn't plebbit

>they proceeded like the proud privacy-conscious company they are.

So you would have been happy Apple defending a criminal's privacy? That is just dumb.

Those people make money by giving the things other people created so the best they can do is act like criminals and stay off the grid. If he was too dumb to manage even that then he was too dumb to run a criminal business.

libgen

I was referring to the fact that Apple brand themselves as a company that protects their users privacy while being the biggest squealers around.

As for the question to whether or not hosting torrents is a crime, like robbery, this is a debate which I am not willing to enter here.

twirpx.com
It's in Russian, but there are a lot of books in English, at least for EE/Optics.

>I don't think you'll get verbally abused for torrenting here.
Nah, I mean for not being on board with recent events.

>this is a debate which I am not willing to enter here.

Except it isn't a debate. If the government considers you are a criminal then you are a criminal.

>inb4 no because it isn't really bad

You are still going to jail nigga wtf.

>be apple
>prevent the FBI from accessing the iPhones of the San Bernardino terrorists, and pull out a PR show about it for months
>sell out a guy who hosts a torrenting platform within hours

>If the government considers you are a criminal then you are a criminal.
Nice critical thinking there. You should apply for an internship at the north korean government. You'll be exactly the kind of people they look for !

>Nice critical thinking there.

Hey, not once did I say that I agree with the government. I am just saying that your ass is still going to jail.

In North Korea you can defy the government all you want (and you rightfully do so) but the police will still fucking kill you and all of your family because those are the rules.

Stop being a baby. Don't tell me, you are one of those millenials that get signatures for petitions and shit because you think that if you feel something is bad then it must be changed. The tumblr invasion has started topkek.

This is a false equivalence.

The information in the terrorist case was in their device. This time the information was in Apple's server. In other words, it was in Apple's computers. Technically that is their information so they can do all they want with it.

I am sure in the terms of service they address this, saying that any information that you give them they can do anything they want with. Well, that guy willingly gave them his IP by making a purchase so you can't complain.

He was just dumb.

They didnt withhold the crack for the iphone because they believe in personal privacy, they withheld it because they dont want the value of their product to be damaged.

They cooperated with the government by providing the information needed to catch the kickasd torrent guy because its in their best interest to impede music piracy over the internet.

The people of this board are smart enough to realise how subjective the application of law generally is. Its not a question of whether the guy was a criminal, its a question of whether apple are a bunch of dicks. I find it hard to believe that they did it for the sake of integrity, although maybe they did.

In my personal opinion, music piracy over the internet is equivalent to going to a neighbours house and memorizing the design of their dining room table, then going home and building an identical one for yourself. Or rotoscoping as a legitimate art form versus being the same as plagiarism. Digital music is just data. Maybe a world where people didnt only do things for money is a better one? I dont know.

didn't know Kate winslet was wearing a hijab

You can make up all the reasons you want. The true reason was that if they were to crack a phone then that would send a precedent for future cases.

The idea is that your own device that legally belongs to you is protected.

In this case the torrent guys willingly sent apple his fucking coordinates. That information was the computers that Apple legally owns.

From both a legal and moral standpoint, and for all I care, apple can do whatever they want with the information they have in their computers. Just like I would like to do anything I want with the information I have in my computers.

>In my personal opinion
Regardless of how good your opinion is, you are not the government so your opinion is worthess in a legal discussion. So is mine.

> Digital music is just data.
It is legally protected data. The money the bank has is just a bunch of paper.

>Maybe a world where people didnt only do things for money is a better one?

Okay, so you are 14. Good to know.

... maybe put this way
If the (corrupt) government considers you are a criminal... Then you are a criminal...
Meaning... not that you are.. but the filthy gvt Says you are....

>Digital music is just data.

It's "just data" until you spent precious time and resources creating something only to have it stolen by people who refuse to pay for it and have the audacity to justify it as anything other than theft.

Then, all of a sudden, you'll be against it.

I wouldn't mind someone not paying for the music I make. The people who download it free were never gonna buy it anyway so how is it loss? It spreads my work around. If I like an artist's work I buy merch and see them live whenever they come to town.

>I can break the law whenever I don't like it
fuck off
if you break the law, you are a criminal
if you don't like the law, do something about it or move somewhere else

No, their robot will send hitman on you without seeing them

>I wouldn't mind someone not paying for the music I make. The people who download it free were never gonna buy it anyway so how is it loss?

Hey guys, user doesn't mind if his music is downloaded for free. Let's all download it!

>Just like I would like to do anything I want with the information I have in my computers.
Except make a copy of it, evidently.

>Except make a copy of it, evidently.

Well, I would not like to make a copy of any valuable information in my computer and then be forced to give it away or have it be stolen.

Just like if artists wanted to be poor and give their shit for free then they are legally capable of licensing their music that way.

itt: bad debating style.

claim: artists are poor if you torrent their music
fact: piracy had made it harder for a couple artists to get rich as quickly as before, but in turn the digital age has made it a lot easier to sustain yourself making music (or any other art, in fact).

claim: apple did it because [insert single reason here]
fact: in all likelihood, they did it for a bunch of reasons, not the least of which being that they are probably legally forced to do so anyway.

there's more but i'm tired.

soundcloud.com/kludgybrain

Bon appetite. Bedroom production at its finest.

I'm not sure what music costs but the most common reason or piracy is bad pricing. As the guy before said, it is DATA, data can be copied for free infinite number of times. Yes, making that bunch of data costs money and energy, but it doesn't cost what the artist gets back. copying music used to cost money for the medium, but now data is transfered over the internet for free (for what you pay for the internet already). And it is unthinkable to make a product for 100€ and receive 100x that much just because it exists with no further cost. Digital data needs to be considered when setting the price. even Play and apple store apps usually cost less then 2€ (0,99 and 0,49 being common) and theres way more work put into and maintaining an app.
