OP here. I'm about 10 pages away from finishing The Picture of Dorian Gray and its pretty lame tbqh. The middle part of the book was a struggle to get through.

The book itself is well written, but its not "wow" good. If this book was written in the current year people would call Oscar Wilde pretentious.

The starter pack shouldn't be the major meme books. Most of them are fairly complex and require at least some basic familiarity with advanced techniques and devices. So books like Ulysses, BM, IJ, GR aren't recommended.

I don't have a chart, but if you are just beginning, I'd recommend a few of the following:

you want to understand western literature as a whole? start with the greeks

you just want to read good books for entertainment and thoughts? go to the wiki and browse the recommendation images, pick things that sound interesting to you, read. collect a more focused reading list once you have some idea of what you want (if it is either of the things mentioned above, the greeks are your list)
that Veeky Forumscore is pretty good if you just want something good to read, without caring too much about becoming cultured/acquiring understanding about the history of literature (or literature itself)
