>The Greeks
>The Greeks
>The Greeks
>My diary desu
>The Greeks
Most importantly, the Greeks.
This, to be frank with you my relative
> No Moby Dick
Nigga where is Infinite Jest?
>kant
>not schelling
I thought this is a place for intelectuals, not a memeing board
There is nothing wrong with Hitchhikers Guide you jaded pissant
>4 decent/good books
>corncobs tortillas yecarthy mixed in
who are you trying to ruse
yes there is
mira pls go
>Infinite Jest>Blood Meridian
Good job undermining your own forced meme
Blood Meridian
Collected works of Borges
Ulysses
Gravity's Rainbow
The Ego and Its Own
You also have to not read/flick through Infinite Jest and tell everyone who seems new to read it.
they're both bad actually but his point stands
at least people know ij is bad. have to make sure the corncobbers don't meme anyone else into tortilla land
If I were doing a Veeky Forums starter pack it would be something like:
20th century English novels: Lolita, Great Gatsby, The Bell Jar, As I Lay Dying
Pre 20th century: Werther, Hadji Murat, The Odyssey, Great Expectations
Poems: Shakespeare, Blake, Dickinson, TS Eliot
Short stories: Thomas Hardy, James Joyce, Alice Munro, Raymond Carver
I could see how a person who says things like "jaded pissant" would think that
>Short stories of Thomas Hardy
Direct me sempai
Nobody cares about your opinions
Memes aside, the actual 5 most approved modern Veeky Forumserary works(pre-summer)
1. Ulysses
2. Moby Dick
3. Anna Karenina
4. Middlemarch
5. The Brothers Karamazov
honorable mention to Don Quixote
I'm sorry, but
is right
Wessex Tales. Comfiest book I've ever read .
...
>people will take my word over Harold Bloom's
It's terrible.
OP here. I'm about 10 pages away from finishing The Picture of Dorian Gray and its pretty lame tbqh. The middle part of the book was a struggle to get through.
The book itself is well written, but its not "wow" good. If this book was written in the current year people would call Oscar Wilde pretentious.
>corncobbers are this buttblasted
>they wont accepted my forced meme! damage control!
does yecarthy/yecarthy's publisher pay you to shill the corncob chronicles or are you just that big of a pleb?
And if you went around in current year speaking like they did in 1890, people would have plenty of names for you. What a pointlessthing to say.
Catch-22
Walden
Inherent Vice
Lolita
Infinite Jest
I just finished it. I would give it a light 7.
I like how the one with the moon runes is implied to be the quran but for all I know of arabic it could be a princess from mars
...
>I Served the King of England
>A River Runs Through It
>The Postman Always Rings Twice
Absolutely nobody on Veeky Forums talks about these, why are they on here? Remarque and that specific Hesse book are also questionable.
Don't listen to any of them. Start with the Greeks; I'm not even meming.
Excuse me, but hasn't this list been Veeky Forums's starter pack for YEARS? When did you guys chenge it?
I'm sure you mean 'read/kino through'
It looks like a joke to me. Or what someone wishes was the Veeky Forums starter kit. Hrabal is GOAT btw.
>no hegel
stick to dfw redditor
The starter pack shouldn't be the major meme books. Most of them are fairly complex and require at least some basic familiarity with advanced techniques and devices. So books like Ulysses, BM, IJ, GR aren't recommended.
I don't have a chart, but if you are just beginning, I'd recommend a few of the following:
>The Republic-Plato
>The Illiad-Homer
>The Odyssey-Homer
>Nicomachean Ethics-Aristotle
>The Divine Comedy-Dante
>Any of Shakespeare's tragedies
>As I Lay Dying
>Crime and Punishment
>Short stories of Flannery O'Connor
>The Holy Bible-KJV or Douay-Rheims only
>Dubliners-Joyce
there's a lot more I could list, but these are pretty comfy and necessary reads if you're just starting out.
dfw is even worse than corncobman but they're both so bad it's no point comparing them
yecarthy is redditcore btw.
It's gay and evre1 knows it
>old chart
>pleb books
>mostly American
>all 20th century
>reddit books
>no meme books
>too many meme books
>high school summer reading/English class
>I'm a special snowflake and want my personal choices to be the standard
take any number of these
the wiki article to DFW
google image search: harold bloom
skim the bible memorize something that seems significant and like a good argument to shoehorn into literally anything
find a Veeky Forums infographic and take note of some of the titles, decide which ones you like / will shit on based on author name and cover
remember that absolutely fucking everything is a spook authors you dont like are hacks existentialists are teenage faggots and tao lin must go to bed
>>As I Lay Dying
Why does this always get rec'd over The Sound and the Fury and Light in August? They're both superior imo
Actually Go Down, Moses is his best.
Go Down, Moses is his best.
Few years out of date but
Crying of Lot 49
Master and Margarita
Stoner
Siddhartha
Hunger
Those were some of the few that people on here seemed to have actually read, most other books tended to have more unspecific shitposting than discussion
As a seasoned Veeky Forums meme veteran, you want some good 'ol Veeky Forumscore.
5 i think are THE Veeky Forumscore memes (meme trilogy included obviously)
Infinite Jest
Ulysses
Gravity's Rainbow
Moby Dick
The Brothers Karamazov / Lolita
this is the high school starter pack
Here's a starter pack for ya
*garbs crotch*
Are Self and Adler just to ruse everyone who recognizes the ruse? They seem like completely random choices.
These, but they have to be read in the proper order. Don't think you can just jump into Belly Button Book until you've read Caesar's Conquest of Gaul and The Anne Rice Reader.
everyone pointing out memes but no one even addresses elliot rodger
>Veeky Forums
>intellectuals
starter pack for what?
you want to get into philosophy? the greeks
you want to understand western literature as a whole? start with the greeks
you just want to read good books for entertainment and thoughts? go to the wiki and browse the recommendation images, pick things that sound interesting to you, read. collect a more focused reading list once you have some idea of what you want (if it is either of the things mentioned above, the greeks are your list)
that Veeky Forumscore is pretty good if you just want something good to read, without caring too much about becoming cultured/acquiring understanding about the history of literature (or literature itself)
