I don't like what she has to say, I don't like her poems, etc, but I'd like to live in a world where everyone felt free to express their feelings in poetry, even if it's bad poetry, unmetrical poetry, "slam poetry", whatever. I think we are too uptight about how people talk. We only tolerate "good prose" in books because we're told that they're worth reading—in our everyday lives we don't tolerate any attempt at rhetoric on the internet or in speech. If any one of us should write a Veeky Forums post with the voice of Nabokov we know how many would be quick to "cringe" at it.

The result of this snobbery is that our academics, our politicians, our poets are weak. And what's worse, ballads and chants have fallen out of our culture. By our cold and vulgar and superior attitude we have salted the earth for each new generation of men and women who might have sung and danced.

Savannah Brown deserves censure for encouraging bad morality. But every one of you who has boasted his embarrassment at one of her videos is guilty of condemning her for choosing to speak in something more than plain speech, because you know you would not have reacted thus if she had spoken in what we call "plain speech"—which is really the most affected and obscure variety of speech we use, and which will be the death of English literature and life.

I don't think it's really fair. It's possible to express yourself in something other than a plain way and not come across as an intellectual poser. This girl doesn't really manage it. She's got that performer's quality about her in her slam poetry, like she's faking the effect and not actually feeling anything.

I think that overall, we are perceptive to people who are faking it. I remember when I was younger that this quality in people, this over-affected emotional quality that is most easily seen in slam poetry, was one of my greatest turn-offs towards art and intellectualism. Authenticity is a whole different thing, and we should encourage people to be authentic, whether that means plain speech or nabokov. The problem with this girl isn't that she's expressing herself, I think, but it's that she's trying to sound smarter than she actually is, or like she's found some greater truth than she actually has.
