I haven't read The Corrections, which is supposedly his masterpiece, but I didn't find Purity to be reflective of the praise that's heaped on him as an author who understands and picks apart the modern human condition. It was a well-told and genuine story, but not really groundbreaking in my opinion, though he's great at holding the reader's attention. At this point it's given that any discussion of Franzen draws comparisons to DFW, so I would say that if you've read the latter's fiction, you can expect similarities tone-wise. Both ineffably capture what it feels like to live in modern Western society, but Wallace was more concerned with artistic authenticity than Franzen, who writes proper 'narratives.' Wallace's works often feel like volumes in an overarching manifesto.
