Because European philosophy since Descartes consists of people really wanting to believe in God, but further and further realising how irrational, empty and artificial that belief is. By the end of XIX century they accepter the obvious, hence "the God is dead."

Most philosophers pre20th century were also opposed to organized religion. They believed in a higher power for lack of any alternatives, but they certainly didn't believe in the religious practice of their time or any of the traditions we've held onto since.
