How's my August reading list?

How's my August reading list?
I've tried to add some variety.

Entry level memeshit

I hate this board

Then why are you even on it, dipshit?

I think it's a good collection to read through user.
Don't listen to the above posts.

>IJ
>good
pick one

Drop IJ, it's crap.

Dune and a couple of the other books complement each other nicely. Give them a browse and try to address Herbert's philosophical interests, since that's the backbone of Dune.

Yeah don't listen to the complaining pussies above, none of the serious readers here like them.

IJ isn't good, though. The other books seem fine.

Does anyone here read books they find on their own? I'm so tired of seeing Veeky Forums starter stacks. No one on this board reads for enjoyment anymore, you all just want bragging rights for finishing certain boring ass books.

leddit core
I do, but there is not really much interest in this board about obscure hispanic authors so that.

>Buying books in such poor condition.

>Infinite Jest.
>Boring.

Pick one.

Its like you guys hate on books just because they are Veeky Forums memes, when they are actually good.

Yeah bro let's read about vapid tennis playing twats for 65 pages in a row set in The Year of the Depends Undergarment. Fascinating!

ij is fine, just not deserving of its length. its hatred is often deserved.

Hello plebo.

>Not understanding any of the themes or references embedded in the story and only understand surface level "vapid tennis playing twats".

>Not understanding any of the themes or references embedded
an ape could understand them, this isn't difficult literature, the problem is the vehicle carrying them along is literally shit. Get over yourself, kid.

Is Infinite Meme actually any good?

It's a 6/10. Doesnt deserve to be overrated or overhated imo.

Overall it's not really bad, just meh.

bumping for this post

Dune was a hell of a read, but from what I understand the later sequels (namely 5 and 6) go off the rails a bit

As much as "start with the Greeks" is memed and countermemed here, I really liked the ancient world and have read more content from it than I've ever seen in any of the bookshelf threads, and have had a lot of fun doing it. Nobody cares, and that's okay. I think you have to come to terms with lit being mostly generic, and accordingly try to enjoy the occasional thread that is actually engaging. I see maybe 2-3 decent ancient world threads a week (most of the threads are generic entry level Greek shit, I swear to fucking God I'm the only one on this board to have a significant Roman interest), and that's still with a really broad subject matter; I imagine that looking out for threads about less popular fiction that you also have read that you also enjoyed is even more difficult.

lol romes culture was a shit. nobody cares about muh roman literature, take yer ass to Veeky Forums

I do. I read a ton of genre in between reading stuff from the American canon, and plenty of modern fiction. Comics and graphic novels too. I read because I love it, not because I'm a college sophomore trying to impress strangers on Veeky Forums.

Red Mars does not dissapoint. It's part of a trilogy I never got around to finish. But this first book was pretty good hardcore sci-fi. The colonization of Mars was always a really interesting topic for me

I second this dude. I have a classics degree so I actually do care.I'm sick of people meming Po-Mo shit though, dont give a fuck about it.

>Infinite Meme

question, do you really expect to read all of those in one month or is this a joke thread?

are you unemployed or something?

Once someone has developed their taste enough to be able to find their own books they lose the need for external validation. I like to imagine all of these bookshelf and recent purchases threads are made up of new enthusiastic readers trying to find themselves.

...

Good question

If you only read the classics, can you ever truly appreciate literature?

Most people here seem to be unemployed. They look down on those of us who have jobs.

>a few weeks in a row of not finding any decent shit in my citys thrift store circuit

>today find 1953 literary guild of america print of the brothers karamazov translated by princess Alexandra Kropotkin

Oh i am comfy lads

if you think Herbert is in any way insightful I wouldn't trust your judgement on anything

>Does anyone here read books they find on their own?

This is such an idiotic way to think, honestly. If you haven't read classic works like Siddhartha or something, it isn't a fucking shame to read them. It would be a shame to avoid them because of "muh individuality", though. Veeky Forums:s favorite books are all very acclaimed classic books (or some newer), reading them because of Veeky Forums or otherwise is never a bad thing.

And this is spoken by someone who spent years of his youth not reading Dostoyevsky, Nabokov, etc simply because they were "too popular" and thus not cool n individual enough. I even avoided Plato and Aristotle because of this when I got interested in philosophy. It was a retarded attitude. It may be an almost okay attitude for popular entertainment, but not for ~high culture art~ (the classic books are classic for a reason)

why would you read Nietzsche?

You don't get to play the "You didn't get it" card with Infinite Jest. This reminds me of a boss I had who said "the themes of Hunger Games goes over most people's heads." Infinite Jest has entry level themes with pastas of 1930s Merck Manuals so people will feel like they're slogging through something difficult.

Hello plebo.

>This reminds me of a boss I had who said "the themes of Hunger Games goes over most people's heads."
What the fuck?

Beautiful insight.

desu there aren't many worthwhile books that aren't on the top 100 chart

...

Damb, she's fine. She should do an Animorphs-themed milk-me-mommy porno.

nobody fucking asked you, fag. :^)

Siddhartha was amazing. If you read Siddhartha 10 times instead of Infinite Jest once your life would be exponentially better

Some solid choices there OP, minus the space shit.
