NYRB are beautiful and feel amazing when holding and reading them, but you don't get to pick the publisher until the last step. If you do it in reverse, it's clear you're a poser pretending you like reading.

Just read the first novella in Suspended Sentences and didn't read on. Cool mysterious French vibe, fun atmosphere with lots of dreary shit. But that was all I got out of it. Decided it was all Nobel hype. I'd give him a second chance if he had something that had more...emotion? If the only emotion is "atmosphere" and it's not charged by human behavior, I lose interest.

if you want more than atmosphere, then perhaps give 'young once' or 'in the cafe of lost youth' a try

but modiano only has two nyrb books and neither are his best. young once is a nice little read and the cafe of lost youth doesn't do modiano's capabilities the right service. desu if you read cafe of lost youth, you should read after the circus then after. together they feel full.

out of the dark or honeymoon are a better introduction into modiano as a writer imo. they're his sweet spot. his earlier work, the occupation trilogy, are completely different in tone and though good, not really how modiano writes anymore. they are a lot more surreal i guess. missing person, paris nocturne, and so you don't get lost in the neighborhood bend more toward the noir end of the spectrum.

the nobel was more for modiano being one of the few writers to shine a light on french compliance with the holocaust during the occupation. his first three novels mostly take place in this era. this was before he decided to start writing noir based novels heavy in mood and atmosphere. check those out. my favorites the night watch. it's about a french jew who works with the gestapo and resistance at the same time but told in a much more wtf like way - it's not a straightforward narrative

i really dont know why the people on Veeky Forums hate STEM so damn much. your college daze and shitty relationships arent going to back a genius novel that you might think its going to. get some real work and experience under your belt, thats way more interesting than hearing how you think your so much of a creative individual and that people should take you seriously.

And that's ok, but you get there because that's the publisher editing what you want to read. Not the other way around my man. It doesn't make sense. It shows that you're more worried about collecting pretty hipster decoration than actually reading the book.
NYRB are beautiful and feel so good in my hand. It's the publisher I'll choose most of the time if the work I'm interested in is edited by them.
